I'd consider cutting DJ Johnson before Clowney. He hasn't shown anything in the 2 seasons he's been here. In 27 games he's appeared in he has a half a sack. He will also be turning 27 in October.
Clowney at least fills a role of having a veteran with some success in the NFL with high draft pedigree. If I had to choose between the 2 I'd choose Clowney. I don't see Johnson developing into a solid starter.
No disagreement with cutting DJ Johnson. That was a terrible ‘need’ pick and should be the poster child for why you should draft BPA, not need.

I’m usually more risk adverse but, I’m wondering if it doesn’t make sense to rip the band aid off, trade or cut Clowney and start Scourton. Unless he just seems lost in camp, let’s throw him in the fire and get him real three down starter experience.
We are still in the rebuilding phase, not the ‘win now’ phase.

Also interested in seeing what the Team does with UDFA. Who will be this year’s Coker?

I'm not sure Dan and Dave have the luxury to slow walk this thing. That defense has got to drastically improve or this pick will not cover for them. Someone will be sacrificed and the heat will be turned on. Billionaire owns do not subscribe to long rebuilds, especially those over 75 years old. D&D have the same pressure regardless of who they drafted yesterday or today and tomorrow. The basement has been found and they better get out of it this season or the boo's will be back in force.
Who goes first or would they both go to clear the deck for a new administration?

I don't like giving up future picks on players that you may need that future pick to replace. This team is not in any condition to afford giving up drafts picks in its current state. When they build a team that can have back to back playoff appearances then we can talk.
I understand your point. My counter argument is that you are swapping a good, perhaps very good backup for a 2025 potential starter (Ez, Emmanwori). If Morgan doesn’t believe that either player would start and fill an immediate void, I wouldn’t do the trade. Starting calibre player only.

Why, thank you! I tried really hard on that post. I’m glad I met your expectations…

Big Trade up: Ez, Emmanwori
Minor Trade up: Swinson, Schwesinger
Stay Put: Princely, JT Tui, Norman-Lott, Xavier Watts, Trey Amos, Trapilo, Mbow
The “go bananas” option: Jaylin Noel
I would do the minor trade up without hesitation. I’m not sure I trust Morgan to execute deftly on the ‘big swing’ for Ez or Emmanwori…

Pass on trading future picks. No on offering future pics. Stay put or use late round pics in THIS draft only.
Or a player (Zavala; still on a rookie contract) and a later round pick to get up to the top of the second. Not likely but Zavala is probably as good as any G drafted in the second or later. I can’t think of any other player that would have perceived value for a trade up that we would be willing to part with.

“He plucks the ball out of the air.” He’s not a body catcher; that ought to make some of the XL skeptics happy.

Two OT’s may be taken in the top 8 picks. If one of the two falls to pick 8, that could be your BPA.

I fear they will have to take a wr early on day 2 if there's a run on them on day 1. You know how we fair with 2nd round picks and I think the best will be picked by round 3.
Another Panther’s 2nd round WR pick?

Is he worth it? Maybe. I know the team is seriously interested in him or they wouldn't have met with him 3 times. He's the best safety in this draft and 1 of only 2 safties that are day 1 worthy picks.
The way I see it is that the team has the option of taking a player at a position that is a huge value to draft. That's edge, tackle, qb or wide receiver. Ask yourself who in this class of day 1 picks could benefit the Panthers the most to draft.
Now look at the visits and see what positions they have put the most time in day 1 players. Two things stand out to me. They are focusing on defense and it's OLB and a safety. I think it comes down to 3 players and they are Walker, Stewart and Emmanwori. Everyone else is smoke and mirrors.
Good logic. I see it.

The problem with saying bpa is who's bpa are you talking about? The term bpa is always in the eyes of the beholder. When I look at all the projected day 1 selections I see 2 that stand out. The next guy could go 4 or as far down as 32. It's that wide open the way I see it. If you want my honest opinion Cam Ward is a day 2 qb and is lucky he's the best of the group.
Okay, throw away the poll list. You're the Panthers GM and we're on the clock; Emannwori is available. Would you pick him at 8?

Yea I’m not in love with any of the guys to be honest. Not a great class to be picking 8th overall unfortunately. It would be better to have several 2nd round picks.
No disagreement with you. The poll is me exploring the possibility that we do not get an acceptable trade down offer and have to make a choice at 8 so, who is a true BPA, not a need pick.

I could be completely wrong but I would take Walker over Graham. It’s not really a need issue. Walker just seems like he has a higher ceiling. And with no real safe picks why not take a shot on a guy like Walker?
Walker has a lot to like. I'm still unsure if he is 'tweener' or an every down player.

For true BPA at 8, not need but BPA, I've come around to thinking that Will Campbell (OT) represents the best player available. Flame away.

The list is incomplete without knowing the first 7 picks. You are asking me to only pick from the players on your list. That's just another way of saying who I want from only this group.
Unfortunately, I cannot change the poll at this point. Who did I overlook that you would have included in the list?

Mason Graham will be long gone.
Probably but not guaranteed. I've seen a few recent mocks where he is available at 8.

Who's the first 7 off the board?
Ward, Hunter, Carter are off the board. The poll assumes that any on the list are still available at 8.

True, but that insurance has a cost that can be avoided (in part).
