In Teppers mind, I bet He’s thinking that our new coach is  getting an absolute minimum of three years to prove himself. This way Rhule and Frank are off the books, and he can move on if needed, and he shows the league that he can be patient. This also gives us time to move on from Young if he does not work out. If it works out then things are fantastic, if not, clean sweep with coach, gm, and QB

    3 years makes sense.

That will let us move on from BY if needed and let a supposed QB guru get a shot with another young guy if BY doesn't work to prove himself.

The mechanics can absolutely be fixed. The footwork can absolutely be fixed.

Not 100% sure we can fix the most important part of the equation which is between his ears.

The size or arm strength that people harp on, plenty of QB's in the NFL have lacked that and been successful. That just limits your overall ceiling. The hyper focus on that is retarded and it ignores a lot of bigger problems.

Ultimately, I think a lot of this HC hire was the "fix Bryce" mentality. I suspect that will be wildly unsuccessful(as a strategy and in practice).

The most critical component of fixing Bryce is himself. He has to realize his flaws and work to fix them. There are ample amounts of this coaching and expertise around. If he has any designs of this NFL career being more than a minute, he better be deep into his contacts and working on these flaws now.

A lot of posters don't realize how critical footwork is I think. Yeah the Cams and the Josh Allen's used a Canon to make up for bad footwork early but with decent footwork, Young's arm talent is more than enough.

But the problem is if he can't be consistent even when a pocket is breaking down, that's where the issue is. And as you say - that's mental...

He's never gonna get taller or stronger to make up for physical deficiencies but there's still a chance he'll become better.

My big concern is... Okay, he gets better. But how much better?

Keeping a umm “man” in a job he was qualified to have and passed over for. God bless America.

Mixed feelings here... I think if he doesn't get a HC spot this year but he gets more pieces on D and a 2nd year with Brown, Luvu, Horn, etc I could see him having an incredible defense and I think that gets him a HC spot.  If he wants to leave he should be allowed to, but 3 teams in 3 years is rough.

Edit: 100% honest I would rather have had Evero. I don't give a poo about fixing Bryce, I mean it's a nice idea but I'd rather go with the guy that has proven he can maximize from guys with talent.... Evero... But that's neither here nor there anymore and hopefully canales.does well

In a scheme that actually caters to his skillset you'll see an uptick and some better play.  Hence 2 seasons, if the next season its more of the same and no improvement, you move on.

Oooh I thought you meant 2 more seasons.

He'll definitely get a chance this coming season, as he should, but he's gonna need to have a major uptick for us to really count on him I'd think.

Exactly where I'm at. Am completely neutral on the hire, which I guess is better than the strong confusion/aversion I felt with the Rhule and Reich hires. Could just be the apathy though.

Rhule was exciting in how different he was from Rivera. Ugh.

Reich was.... Well, I was excited that he could put together a staff I guess.  My excitement was very low there.

I just... Don't care anymore. We didn't even finish our interviews again... I just hope this year's charmer is actually good.

2 years with Bryce at the least before moving on.

No way.  If we get another season like last year we move on with a new young QB the following season.

Hell I don't think Bryce survives a full season of play like he showed this year. Yuck.

Sure, maybe.  By the same token, his pre-draft reports had things like:

"He threw passes of 60 yards in the air during pro day"

"Has a quick release, a strong arm and is an accurate passer, especially on the run"

"He has good arm strength with an accurate touch. He has a quick release, and makes good decisions"

Dalton already had a "good" arm coming in.  His improvement is going from "good" to "The Red Rifle".

I don't recall this at all. My memory is Dalton's big criticism was arm strength/talent not being ideal (along with height and athleticism)....

just the first couple google hits... not chosen cause I value them ...

    https://bleacherreport.com/articles/643144-andy-dalton-2011-nfl-draft-scouting-report
"There are questions about his ability to push the ball up-field. He threw passes of 60 yards in the air during pro day, but this was in shorts and without wind. Dalton will not be a big-arm quarterback in a vertical system. He has the arm strength to throw go routes and out patterns but relies more on timing to make his throws. The ball will float down the seam too often."

    https://walterfootball.com/scoutingreport2011adalton_greg.php

"Player Comparison: Chase Daniel. I have seen Dalton compared to Drew Brees, but at this point, a more realistic comparison is to another player on the New Orleans depth chart. Like Daniel, Dalton lacks ideal height and arm strength, but is an accurate passer. Both played in a shotgun offense at the collegiate level. Daniel was not drafted, but he lacked the “it” factor and perhaps some of that was absorbing losses against stiffer competition in the Big XII."

    https://www.dallascowboys.com/news/bucky-brooks-scouting-report-on-andy-dalton

Bucky Brooks: "... Despite displaying B/B-plus arm talent/arm strength..."

Dalton was not considered to have a strong arm strength, but "good" arm strength. In fact, this is the same category Bryce falls into...

    no other interview requests.

Oh I have no doubt we're the only ones that wanted Canales.

I just don't believe he's the only dude we could get.  Ultimately, Tepper likes to outsmart the league (lol), and I think that's again what he is trying to do here.

  9. I don't agree that Dan Morgan is only here cause nobody else wanted to be. I also doubt that is true of Canales.

The one thing we know about Tepper is how fixated he becomes on people... He has a habit of making decisions before interviews are complete, it feels.

Anyway, whatever. Hard to be excited about this.

  10. Our defense did have to contend with an offense scoring more points for the opponents than they scored themselves (hyperbole but...). They also had to contend with terrible field position.

I've not checked in at the end of the season but we had a great third down defense and a good yards per play defense overall.

My thing with Evero is how he managed to patch massive holes with poor parts.

I know the Rams won a Super Bowl but I like what the Lions ending up getting in that deal.

    Rams received:  Matthew Stafford

    Lions received:

    • QB Jared Goff
    • CB Ifeatu Melifonwu (2021 3rd-round pick)
    • WR Jameson Williams (2022 1st-round pick)
    • DL Josh Paschal (2022 2nd-round pick)
    • RB Jahmyr Gibbs (2023 1st-round pick)
    • TE Sam LaPorta (2023 2nd-round pick)
    • DT Brodric Martin (2023 3rd-round pick)

A rare trade that worked out very well for both teams.

He went 8-9 and 10-7 the previous 2 seasons playing in the AFC and in the same division as Miami and Buffalo.  Not the NFC South.

And he went 4-12 this year.

The AFC East was not very good in 2021 or 2022 lol. Buffalo has been consistent but Miami has really been streaky and inconsistent. Definitely better than the South in 2022 and 2023 but we're still talking a bad division.

I don't think Belichick does any better with Ritter.  Hell Jones was a better QB...

Reich took the former path, while Fitterer apparently turned to The Dark Side (or at least took some advice from it). That path hardly ever works because the natural bad guys will always be better at it.

It really doesn't matter what Fitterer did. If he wasn't terrible at his job, he'd still be GM.

Reich, maybe you can argue that his lack of success was ownership related.

    Fitterer appears to just suck.

This job is the least attractive of all these openings by a mile.  Be prepared to be disappointed folks

I do think Tepper's recent history, the lack of a first round pick, and likely having to deal with a bust at QB for one year is weighing us down, but the money Tepper is willing to spend can be attractive.  If he can guarantee coaches he's going to do things differently this year with how he interacts with the staff then I think this job could be more attractive than it seems, especially for some guys that may have a local connection, etc.

Plus even being least attractive is still quite attractive.
