I mean last week you had politicians telling old people they need to be prepared to die for the economy.

Give it another few weeks and the general population might be saying that too.

They need to close everything down for 2 weeks. Everything. If you can’t work from home then it needs to be closed. A few exceptions to the rule of course. Groceries online and pickup only. Gas stations closed except for pumps. Pharmacies open but rules are different. Restaurants closed. Parks and greenways closed. I’m even down with some sort of martial law. Americans are entitled, stupid, and hard headed. Anyone breaking the law gets fined and possible jail time.

Yeah, all the experts have said that if they could wave a magic want that kept everyone at home (and family members 6ft from each other) this thing would be over in 2-3 weeks.

These half measures are just going to prolong it. People are now reporting that they are getting it even though they haven’t left the house in 3 weeks except for groceries. Jeez, I wonder where they got it....

Everyday I look outside and neighbors are standing in groups right next to each other talking away. WTF!

I assumed my whole family had corona 2 weeks ago.  They only tested my son and he got flu positive so they just said we all had flu and sent us home but whole family had every corona symptom.

Yeah, I work with two people who most likely had it weeks ago. They couldn’t get tested so they will never know.

The point I am making is that the hospitals are packed full of the "at risk" folks.  The social distancing does not work when grandparents spend all their time with family, even in groups under 10.  If the 65 and up and at risk folks were quarantined and not getting this virus, the rest of the country could most likely work and serve the at risk folks.  There might be people that are not at risk going to the hospital, but the system should be able to handle them, not unlike the flu each season.

Families would be impacted however by not being able to spend time with the elderly, might even seem cruel, but would not end up in a funeral.

You still social distance, AND you put out the testing for antibodies to know who has already had it.

The normal testing seems kind of stupid now.  If 50% of the people that had it didn't even know?  What about the ones getting tested and negative, do they come back every week until they finally test positive?  Just seems like it is good for building a database of where the outbreaks are, but not much in stopping it.

I see what you’re getting at but this would take a ton of prep time. Not all old people live by themselves and can take care of themselves. The deadly outbreaks in the Seattle retirement homes were started by employees and nurses bringing the virus in.

Also, it’s worth noting that the U.K. was going to use a similar plan but realized the number of hospitalizations that would happen among the “non at risk group” would still overload their healthcare system. They went from “let the young work and get the virus” to “put the entire country in lockdown” in just a week or two.

What should have happened was an earlier travel ban and a complete lockdown of those first few cities where the virus took hold. Unfortunately, that type of lockdown is unconstitutional at the moment. We might end up seeing the first constitutional amendment in a century when this is over.

340 corona cases in Mecklenburg county.  My family knows one of top doctors at Atrium and he told us to hold on to our butts.  April in Charlotte will be bad.  He said to buy food online only.

Yeah, you can only get tested if you are in the hospital and testing has ruled out everything else.

    Mild cases don’t get reported.

  6. One thing we have going for us is our population density is nothing like China and Europe. Most of us don’t take public transport, etc. It’s way easier for us to isolate.

Don't think we tell cancer patients its not big deal, but we also don't tell everyone they are necessarily going to get cancer.  I think that is what he is saying, but then again, I don't really care for him, so it's easy for me to thumb my nose to him.

To me, if China was not turning around in really dramatic ways, I would have a much more jaded outlook, but it can be done and I think mitigation and warmer weather, all bode well for us.

There are also new reports out however that say some people present with GI difficulties and not so much the lung issues.  That will throw a monkey wrench into a lot of efforts.  Guess it's good people getting that toilet paper.

Absolutely, it can be done and I think it will be done.

A lot of people think this is nothing more than the flu and we don’t need to take all these precautions. To me, that is what Tom is getting at.

  8. 1 hour ago, stirs said:

Like Tom, a lot of people have a terrible time assessing risk.

You see this with hurricanes. There are always people who say the risk is overblown and they stay home because “very few people die in these storms”.

Well yeah, because people leave. What would happen if everyone stayed and did nothing?

Same with this. What would happen if nothing was done? Italy x 10 would happen.

You wouldn’t tell a cancer patient that their disease is no big deal because way more people die in car accidents. No, you take the appropriate steps (drastic if required) to stop the threat.

Big woop. How many does the flu kill every year?

    Italy right now.

Reporting 463 total fatalities from the virus, out of 9,172 confirmed cases.

    2019 flu season in Italy.

    2,768,000 cases. 240 deaths.

It's not that serious. Yes you should practice good hygiene but CNN has hyped it way too much. SARS and Swine Flu were much more serious.

Yes, SARS was way worse. Most people won’t die from corona virus, but we have a responsibility to protect the vulnerable. Our medical system cannot handle a modest influx of sick people all at once. That’s the real danger here.

I’m going to trust my friends in the medical field and what they are telling me they are seeing over whatever YouTube channel you are watching.

It's not the black death they are preaching on CNN. If you have pre existing conditions yes but that's not everyone. Like I said watch and see. The biggest fear is the unknown spread.

No one is saying it is the Black Death, but is is serious.

King County (Seattle) has 376 known cases so far with 23 deaths. Some were elderly but some were people in the 50s and 40s. The person in her 40s was a regular employee of the nursing home. She didn’t have major health issues except maybe high blood pressure or something.

The point is, there are a lot of elderly people and people with health issues. If hundreds of thousands or millions of people had this already, basic math says it would be hitting the fan right now.

Negative, without tests they are being treated like other common viruses. Just wait and watch.

Ok....but by all accounts this is deadlier and has more extreme symptoms in the elderly and sick people. My friend has treated these patients. He hasn’t seen a huge uptick in patients in the ICU and he works in Seattle.

Once the test come in the numbers are going to be staggering. But it will signal a end not a beginning.

If the numbers were huge we would be seeing more deaths and over run hospitals. The numbers are most likely still low.

My father in law is a pediatrician. He saw a child today presenting with fever and flu symptoms. Mom (herself a doctor, this will blow your mind momentarily) was sick too. He asked her if they'd traveled anywhere recently. They just got back from Italy recently. Wait... what? The kid had been in school all day. Mom had been seeing patients the last two days having just gotten back from Italy presenting with these symptoms. The child's flu test came back negative. Waiting for the coronavirus results. FIL is self quarantining pending those test results.

People are so stupid. Where is this?

I live in Tacoma Washington...I know all too well about this getting out of hand now.

I was just talking to a friend that is a nurse in Tacoma. What he’s telling me is terrifying. No hospital in that area is prepared to deal with this. His hospital (a big hospital) has 6 (yes SIX) hazmat suits for the entire building. They are handing off food trays that suspected corona virus patients are eating off from to the dietary staff with no labeling of where the tray came from. Warnings about this are falling on deaf ears. They are setting up adhoc decom rooms but they are failing all tests.
