I might disagree with that, anecdotally at least. Or question it. We can name a lot of great players taken in the 3rd round. And in a deep draft as this supposedly is? With 3 chances?

Here are some numbers I found. Posted this a few months back.

2nd round - about 33% of players drafted in the 2nd round developed into a solid NFL starter. It’s higher for the top of the round. From here, it dropped by 50% per round.

    3rd round - about 16%.

    4th round - about 8%.

If you do the math, selecting two 3rd rounders gives you a 29.44% chance of gaining ONE long term starter.

Thats less than the odds for a single high 2nd.

Question from a person that is not great with stats: If the scouts suck, then isn’t it better to view a pick as an educated guess? And if that were true wouldn’t we have a better chance with more guesses?

No, the stats clearly show that the odds of getting a good player fall drastically as the draft goes on.

In short, your odds of getting a starter at the top of the 2nd round is much higher than finding one starter from three 3rd rounders.

It’s like this. If your kicker sucks, do you want to give him one try on the 10 yard line or 3 tries at the 50?

I just posted this yesterday.  My cynical side was showing when I made this, saying 'prove to me this is a NEW thinking Panthers front office' and until then we will continue to stupid sh*t in the draft.

It’s the exact same scouts with the assistant GM now the GM.

Why does anyone think things will be that different?

is saying we are going to have a strong running game really any different than Frank Reich claiming we are going to have this creative offense that was being held secret?

Canales has 1 season to his name.  He had the worst rush attack in the NFL.

I think that's just a coach saying stuff.  Only really way to have a strong rush attack is to line up under C and play old school football....or have an elite rusher.  I don't see how we will be in position to have a strong rush attack this year.  We have average RBs.  Lining up under C all game until we can't and pounding the rock doesn't jive with Bryce Young or developing the former #1 overall we gave up the farm for.

I think Canales says the run stuff because our QB was bad last year and he knows we got a LOT of work to do on the pass game.

It’s coach speak for “we’re going to TRY to run it a lot”.

All of that will go out the window if they can’t.

Hard to call Mingo a mistake with the sh—show we had last year. With three of our new coaches, including our HC, with a background in developing WRs I’m willing to give Mingo a mulligan in hopes that he’ll respond to better coaching. Maybe they can help TMJ aka Funchess 2.0 also but I’m less optimistic about him.

There were better options at that draft position.

He might turn into something, but we should have taken one of the more pro ready guys.

Joe Person spoke with Mike Tomlin about Diontae Johnson according to Anthony Rizzuti of USA Today's Panthers Wire.

    Says Tomlin:

“You’re gettin’ an awesome route runner, a guy that can create separation at the top of routes, a guy that’s tough to stay with."

    He continued:

“He can win in non-vertical route-running and vertical route-running. So you get a guy with a complete skill set in that regard and I just think he’s gonna be a big asset to ’em.”

That's all great, right? I knew all that, and I, like others (e.g., listen to ehat Aaron Duncan and Damian Parsons say about him in the video in the other thread) was pumped when we signed him. I think that he's a better receiver than some Huddlers give him credit for.

The "problem" is that Tomlin obviously isn't broken hearted about DJ leaving, and I think that another comment that he made to person may portend something less desirable about DJ:

“Make no mistake, he wants the football,” Tomlin said. “But I think they all do.

    https://pantherswire.usatoday.com/2024/03/26/nfl-annual-league-meeting-panthers-steelers-diontae-johnson-mike-tomlin/

Look, I'm not saying that I definitely think that DJ is going to be a problem. He may not be any more of a "problem" than the average wide receiver diva. And he deserves to play with a decent QB which likely led to issues the last couple of seasons. But, will he ultimately be happy here? There's a potential for a fair amount of targets of course, but DJ comes to a situation where Pittsburgh was winning to one where the Panthers are consistently losing. Do you think he's the type (like Davante Adams is purported to be) that cares about his personal legacy more than that of the overall success of the team?

I guess we'll just have to wait and see how it all unfolds. Perhaps Canales and company with all the sunshine and positivity is actually a better fit.

In any event, I wouldn't bet on DJ as a long term solution just yet, even if he seems like a great receiver to pair up with Bryce.

One last thing: we had another guy that wanted the ball all the time that worked out well. Perhaps I'm just reading a little too much into that last part Tomlin said, or should at least take the part about "they all do," at face value. I'm going to be watching closely though.

This is what the Steelers do. You complain and you’re gone.

He complained - he got shipped to the worst team in the league.

Picket complained about Russ, he was gone the next day.

That generation can't see what is coming because they can't fathom it.

Despite the fact that social media advertising revenue is insanely higher than TV ad revenue.

But....the status quo will always remain. Riiiight.

They will subscribe until they are dead. It’s what they like and are used to.

It’s just like my grandparents and landline phones.

Real talk though: all these streaming options are not going to work long term.

At some point they will consolidate into cable tv 2.0 because people want simple.

They won’t be as powerful as before because of YouTube, but it will happen.

That's exactly what I mean, I know very few under 30's that pay for cable or the streaming equivalent. They piecemeal or share regular streaming services but not many are willing to pull the trigger on expensive options just to watch sports. They steal or avoid them.

As I said, the foundation is older Millenials to Boomers. As they age or die out, they will not be replaced. ESPN is majorly fuged.

The only people still subscribing to cable or listening to radio are boomers/gen X.

I said day 3 not round 3. 5-7th or even Udfa after the draft

Im just not a fan of spending your last $5 on a lottery ticket when the pantry is bare.

We can gamble once we have a competitive roster that could actually support a developing QB.

  10. 46 minutes ago, PNW_PantherMan said:

The developmental QB is an outdated thing from the 80s and 90s.

In todays game you can either play or you can’t.  Teams aren’t drafting QBs and letting them develop for years like baseball pitchers.

A 3rd day QB pick is just a lottery ticket.  The odds that were in week 15 and Bryce is either hurt or a flop is significant.  I could easily see the staff wanting to see what they have in a day 3 QB in that situation.

Exactly. It’s really hard to improve when you’re not able to play in a real game.

It’s even harder given how often nfl staffs turn over and how that impacts player development.

Maybe ask some 49ers fans who didn’t think they needed to draft a backup/day 3 qb how they feel about it now

You’re asking for the Panthers (and their crack scouting dept) to spend a 3rd round pick in the hopes they stumble on an Uber talented QB the rest of the league overlooks.

Not just that, but then we have to hope Bryce goes down so this 3rd round pick can get game reps and develop into something.

All this when we have poo for depth at all positions.

For the chance it could turn into a Lance/Purdy or Cousins/RG3 situation

That’s the dream, but that’s a huge waste of a pick for a team that needs depth at other positions.

Even if we got a Purdy like talent, would we even know? Those situations happened because circumstances forced unlikely guys into the starting role.

    Such an enormous long shot.

Diamond in the rough? Because maybe Canales should get a guy he think he can develop since he's supposedly a qb whisperer?

When was the last time a later round QB developed while spending years on the bench?
