No idea why we didnt get rid of the entire scouting department a long time ago.  Why wait till after the draft.  I assume that played a part in why this draft felt like every other draft of the past few years.

They scout during the season (obviously) so this is the only time to switch things up.

We’ll, unless you want to go into FA and the draft with no scouts.

I bet we start hearing about firings on that side tomorrow or next week.

A lot of us were calling for offensive line help this draft this off-season after seeing it collapse last year due to injuries.

I personally found it bizzare that they would spend so much addressing RG and LG. And then just do a patch job at C relying on two guys that have been injured two years in a row and have minimal experience playing the position in the NFL.

What were your thoughts on this? This is probably the main thing the made me not love this draft.  If wed drafted JPJ or Frazier in R2 and gotten a decent RB later it woudlve been perfect to me.

I feel like all that money they spent will be pissed into to the wind if Corbett/Christensen/Mays suck and/are injured.

Given our small QB, we should be taking OL every year until we have a solid line with solid depth.

Looking at top 30 visits, they only looked at guards and tackles.

Four of their 15 visits were OL so they were thinking about it.

    Those 4 went.

    55th, 77th, 81st, 108th.

Basically, they planned to get one in the 3rd-4th round but opted for the linebacker and TE instead.

I think that sometimes fans get caught up in the names and media-driven hype, while the more analytically minded, and the experts---including GMs, team scouts and coaches realize that team building isn't about that.

I don’t see that. Year after year, fans get it right more often than the ‘experts’.

Especially when it comes to the Panthers.

I can agree with this.  We keep our focus on our top likes and don't let notable droppers influence our decision-making.  Even if those droppers align with needs.  We'll see.  The WR room still has me pretty nervous.

Realistically, are teams going to draft guys they haven’t done deep background work on?

    Physicals, character, etc.

It’s basically the same crew as the last 3 drafts. It really seems like we have a hard time going outside of our visits/interviews for late round picks. We don’t see to do well at all with guys who dropped that may or are be better overall players than guys we met.

Does any team choose outside their visit pool regularly?

Top 30 Private Visits (19 confirmed)

    Brenden Rice – WR, USC

Caelen Carson - CB, Wake Forest

    Jase McClellan - RB, Alabama

     Shrine/Senior Bowl/Combine/Pro Day Formal interviews

    Malik Washington – WR, Virginia

Jaden Crumedy – DT, Mississippi State

Blake Larson – T, Augustana (SD)

Ainias Smith Texas – WR, Texas A&M

    Clay Fields – CB, Chattanooga

    Elijah McAllister – EDGE, Auburn

    Jordan Miller – DT, SMU

Trey Taylor – FS, Air Force

Audic Estime – RB, Notre Dame

Players that are remaining from Panthers original visits tracker.

So far every pick we have made has been a player visit. One of these guys will be selected at #157

Someone needs to take all private visits and put a ranking next to them so we can keep track of likely picks.

100%  We passed on a poo load of talent that could play right fuging now but morgans strategy is obviously the long game.  Again I see both sides but one is high high risk and will get your ass fired quickly

We’ve been following Dan’s long game strategy for the past 3 years.

Look how many of our ‘development’ guys just walked in FA.

The idea of developing raw talent doesn’t ever seem to work in the NFL.

Rookie contracts are short, playing time scarce, and staff turnover is high.

I think you missed what I was getting at.

    It's this guy.

He's either literally making the decisions or dominating the decision making process in terms of weighting the evaluation metrics because we're making the exact same types of picks.

I don’t see evidence he’s THAT heavy handed.

This seems like a process Dan and Fitt created together with the scouts based on their own preferences.

One thing is for sure. It’s definitely not coming from the coaches.

I'm sure he had input but obviously Scott was calling the shots. Do you honestly believe he'd be our GM right now if he was lockstep with Fitterer these past few years? Tepper might be a lot of things but you can't question that he wants to win. He wouldn't have hired Dan if he had agreed with Scott on every pick.

    Yes I do.

It’s pretty clear Tepper was having trouble attracting guys to come here.

He hired two guys who had ZERO interviews with other teams.

I think Dan was probably pro Stroud, willing to put up with Dave, and that was enough.

Dan and Fitt are best friends. They are huge influences on each other.

  10. Average Backup Or Special-Teamer

    Strengths

    Explosive athlete.

Rangy with good chase-down gallop to the sideline.

Burst and change of direction make him a toolsy rusher.

Hands are very sticky when he gets his chances to take the ball away.

Lateral agility to expand his short-area tackle success.

    Weaknesses

Play recognition and football instincts are lacking.

Frequently fooled by misdirection in both run and pass games.

Lacks patience and leverage in his scrape, allowing cutback lanes to runners.

Pulled out of position by bait routes in his spot drops.

Pass rush could use more elusiveness when diving into A- or B-gaps.

Was he? The guards we trotted out there were practice squad level. AT was the only WR trying. Chuba was the only RB with consistency. And... our offensive coach was playing an outdated offense. Hurst showed up for two games. Not saying Young is the answer but I'm giving him a mulligan.

You really don’t remember the narrative before last season?

    The dream team staff?

    Thielen and Chark hype?

    Our shiny new RB?

Id say our line is better this year but it’s not a rock solid line and we still only have one proven WR who isn’t old and slow.

They should have picked Jackson Powers-Johnson and Brooks and the plan would have made sense. I can’t believe they plan to go into the season with a guard coming off some serious knee injuries converting to center with no backup plan. Classic idiot panthers.

My guess is they plan to move one of the new guards to center in that situation.
