yeah, that wasn't the point I was making at all.

just that a super lucky play doesn't always completely void what a player did....and the outcome isn't the same for every player that would have found himself in same lucky scenario.

Chubba got lucky.  But there was plenty also shown on that play that was Chubba being different than some other RBs we have seen on our roster.

Cool, but if you hadn't read my previous posts, you might want to check them out.  I took nothing away from the kid's effort.  However, apparently saying it was a great run, although lucky is not sufficiently homer-ish enough for the Huddle.

yeah, luck happens.  My favorite 89 play is that one where he broke what appeared to be 57 tackles vs Houston and came out of that pile for a long and easy TD.  Lot of luck involved.  But probably still required 89 to take advantage of that scenario.  Despite all that luck, a lot of that was still 89.

Cool, so now after one play Chuba is Steve Smith who routinely broke legit tackles on a regular basis.

When players play hard through the end of the whistle,  it's not luck. Yes, the play broke down, but with his desire to not be done, he got out of there, and the block broke him free.

Yes, a complete break down of the play and 6 missed tackles is luck.  I never said he didn't play hard or quit on the play.

Combo of zero blocking, zero tackling, and a ton of effort and determination from Chuba.

I'm not taking anything away form Chuba, but how often can you count on a RB making it out of a huge scrum like that?  I would have the same reaction no matter who the RB was on that play.  It was a cluster fug that he somehow managed to avoid.  Again, the Zylstra block is what really sprung him.  Otherwise it would have been a short gain and we wouldn't be even talking about it.

Maybe Grier is great at practice... who knows... I would have rather snapped up someone like Blake Bortles just for his experience, both at starting games and in the film room.  He could at least teach something to the other guys.

I bet he looks awesome in practice with that no contact red jersey on!

  6. That play was doomed from the jump.  While it was a really good run in the end, a ton of luck was involved.  FIFTEEN players were falling around all around him, the 16th (Colt player gave up thinking the play was over) and he somehow managed to get through.  The Zylstra block was the other key to the play.  Again great play, but extremely lucky.

Vanilla defensive scheme. I'd be more concerned for the QBs that don't look marginally average in these situations... (Grier)

To me it was crystal clear what the staff was attempting to do with Grier.  That was run the ball on early downs to get in 3rd and manageable to keep him out of 3rd and long situations.  It worked to some extent, but even the short passes on 3rd down weren't connecting.  Granted the OL penalties didn't help, but Grier couldn't even get the underneath stuff completed.

My dread is next week he'll play just well enough to keep lingering around, to warrant one more look from the coaching staff.  Come final cuts, Grier does not need to be on this roster.

I'm not saying the OL was awesome. They were decent.  I'd love for he full pressure numbers, if you know where go get them.  I

The predictions around here were that the QB would get "killed", and that they were backups to TRASH.

Is that how you would describe yesterday?

They survived without looking horrible, penalties aside.  I seriously doubt we we sitting on a one score lead by running the ball, that was a function of not letting Grier getting pummeled.

Pretty weird Rhule was caught laughing on the sidelines while Pride was lying on the ground waiting for a cart.

Rhule was talking with a ref, and BOTH he and the ref were giggling about something.  Yes, the optics were bad, but I'm 99.9% sure they weren't laughing AT Pride.  Now, should Rhule have been sharing a light-hearted moment while he had an injured player on the field?  Probably not, but one has to do mental gymnastics to think both he and the ref were making fun of Pride.

Rate is rate. Butkers XP conversion rate was worse. There were articles written about his issues with extra points.

Cool man you keep your kicker with better 1 point attempts and I'll keep the one with much more success at 3 points.  Deal?

Butker missed a FG and an extra point in his game this week too. He had a worse XP conversion rate than Slye last season.

    But yes. Slye is bad.

Context is everything.  Butker had 54 PATs attempts to Slye's 32.  So yes, it's stands to reason he very well could have more PAT misses given the much greater number of attempts.  The make rate?  Slye was slightly better by 2.8%.  However, on FGs, the ones that count 3 points,  Butker was 12% better on just 9 fewer attempts.

Lastly, I have seen some KC games and while Butker does miss some, he doesn't struggle with ball control like Slye does.

The backups to our offensive line did NOT get our QB killed as some predicted.   You know who you are.

They are both alive and well, last I checked.  PJ wasn't sacked at all and Grier was sacked once for 2 yards.  Neither turned the ball over AT ALL.   No ints and no fumbles were caused because the offensive line failed to do its job.  Was it perfect?  No.  Was it the horror show that some predicted...NO, far from it.  I don't have the pressure numbers, if anyone has them, I'd love to see, but from watching the game, I'd be more worried about their backup offensive line than ours.

This doesn't mean our offensive line is great, but I think its ok to say the offensive line was not trash yesterday.

Grier handed the ball off almost the entire second half or attempted a few short passes.  The last pass attempt, the only one with any significant distance, was a pressure.  PJ had to run out of pressures several times.  The OL penalties were embarrassing.  Scott even got yanked.  Stats don't lie, but they don't tell the entire story either.

He missed one extra point.  And a 60 plus yard fg.  He isn't getting cut over that.

Don't get me wrong, I wish we had someone better, but Slye is safe for now.

Here's Slye's problem, once he has a bad kick it gets in his head.  His first kick was right down the middle.  It was his second or third he sliced badly and his accuracy was gone the rest of the day.

I just think it's highly doubtful we're going to find an upgrade in August and I certainly don't want to spend anymore future draft capital trying to slap a bandaid in the current QB roster.

Right now I'd take Jake Fromm, Joshua Dobbs, Josh Rosen, Trevor Siemien or Brett Hundley over PJ.  All those guys are 4th on the depth chart for their teams right now and will be available in a couple of weeks.

I just think we're squabbling over the wrong thing here. We have a massive question mark at starter. That's the biggest concern until we see the answer to that question.

I totally agree Sam is a huge question mark until he proves otherwise, but I also can't understand why we are seemingly fine with glossing over the reserve QB situation.  Remember, Darnold hasn't been the most durable guy and has yet to play a full season. My point is it's not too much to ask for a little upgrade to the most valuable #2 spot on the team.  Let's forget about Grier, he's obviously toast, but PJ is a #3 in all honesty.  Whether that be on the 53-man roster or practice squad, that's the reality.  We are one hit away form flushing a promising season because the team is too narrow-sighted to realize they have all their eggs in one basket.

Unless you're a high draft pick waiting for your opportunity, all backup QBs have significant flaws. That's why they're backups.

Nobody is questioning why backups are backups, it's just some backups are better than others and some don't deserve to even be 3rd string.

Take the era out of the equation, would you feel better with Steve Beuerlein, Jake Delhomme or even Derek Anderson as a backup over Grier?  Yes, all those guys came here as backups.  Up until today, supposedly the #2 competition between Walker and Grier was a toss-up.  So no, your backup QBs don't have to be flaming bags of dog poo.
