I don't think I would have done what Atlanta did, but this was a very logical explanation for why they did it. You bring up a good point about Bryce. I think the team would be leery about moving on from Bryce if he struggles early. Doing so would indicate they made a bad decision and pretty much shatter his confidence.

And even if we did bench, Dalton is pretty much a C level backup at this point in his career. I actually would have considered taking Spencer Rattler in round 4 or 5. It would have brought in some legit competition and another live arm. We all know that Rattler could have completed a lot of the throws Bryce missed last year, he's already has an established connection with XL, and the offense wouldn't have been restricted to 10 yard passes and bubble screens.

I love to bash them for this move but its smart..

They have a team that can win the NFCS this year, but yet they are picking in the top 10 now.

Cousins contract is really only a 2 year deal. So Penix can sit and learn with no pressure for 2 years and in year 3 when Cousins guaranteed money is over they can plug in Penix.

If they were not in a position to win the South this year then I think this would have been bad trade, but its smart and they can afford it.

Tremble was a pure projection pick based on his athletic profile who did very little in college. Ja’Tavion Sanders is probably a better receiver than him right out of the gate even though Tremble has had 3 years of NFL development. Sanders had over 3x the college production of Tremble and averaged over 15ypc with zero drops this past season. I think the comparison starts and ends with them both being Panthers draft picks.

yeah I get that... Im just saying Ive been hurt with wishful thinking lately with that position

The only difference is that Sanders is nothing like Thimps and Tremble. As a matter of fact he is twice the TE they are. That doesn't mean he will be anything at this level but the skill set is completely different.

Well Tremble was getting George Kittle comps when came out..

Im really excited to see what Sanders can do, but Im not holding my breath for a 4th round TE.

  4. Honestly I really like this draft.

I think my favorite pick is Brooks. Assuming he is what he was in college, we have a thicker version of CMC. This team has made it clear we want to run the ball and we are now set up to do that.

I know everyone is pumped about the Sanders pick up... Im hesitant about that because I felt that same way when we drafted Ian Thomas and again when we drafted Tremble.

Everything from 4th round down I think is just a shot in the dark, but I REALLY like pick 1 and 2 and think they instantly make the team better.

  5. Bryce comes off as a confident leader. He sheltered his team in the media over and over for their bad play, just saying that 'he needed to play better'.

Well gees kid, you had a terrible team around you.

Now we have a better team and I expect we will see better results.

I think we are going to have a lot of people posting "I was wrong about Bryce" threads this season.

  6. I enjoyed the listen. Ellis swearing at the beginning was funny.

A critique: The beginning seemed a bit disjointed as it seemed like you had a million thoughts all at the same time. Also the way you started about Canales but then was like I dont want to talk about his personal life was a little weird. I mean his book is no secret, so not sure if you were referring to that or not?

nice to keep them, sometimes it is better to not bring it up though.  I mean, let's just say random scout was a CJ Stroud 100% guy.  Well, you probably don't go up to Dan and be like....see Dan, I was right.  Morgan, if he was a Bryce guy..... already knows who was a CJ guy.

All scouts keep receipts.. I mean they all write scouting reports.

Listening to interviews of scouts that get moved or promoted, they often refence their reports on players they have scouted that they were proved right on. I think that world is all about receipts.

But your right, flashing that your right when someone else was wrong is a good way to get blackballed in that current organization.

Hasn't it basically been confirmed that Tepper dictated that Frank couldn't just hire and build the staff as he wanted?

This was debated in another recent thread but I think that was over stated. I dont think he was NOT allowed to hire people he wanted, more that he was encouraged to look around the league and hire the best.. even if he didnt have a relationship with them. I think thats why there was never cohesion on the players or the system.

100% agreed with all of that, esp. #1. initially it pisses me off that these things are new concepts here, but i'm just glad we're doing them.

One thing that i remember from last year was that Reich was trying to figure out some things to be more trendy. like having to have the 100 thing png-transparent-red-100-art-emoji-symbol-computer-icons-discord-100-english-text-logo.pngpng-transparent-red-100-art-emoji-symbol-computer-icons-discord-100-english-text-logo.png explained to him. it was funny but one of those moments where you say "at least he's trying" but then you realize he looks like a dork just like i would if i tried to be trendy in public (which i only do to embarrass my daughters).

but we really saw no energy from reich. he was like this contemplative introspective guy who seemed to be full of wisdom (or full of something) that i wanted to like...i wanted to like. but he just kept saying things...kept saying things over and over. worse the way he spoke was contagious. it was just contagious. moving on.

    moving on.

Canales has an attitude that is contagious as well, only his attitude will bring some energy to the team.

    Yup.

Reich was a bad coach for us, but I dont think hes bad coach in general. I think he got burnt out in Indy and never really recovered. Then I think he tried to over compensate for that and made a bunch of bad hires. I think your right that he tried to be trendy especially with the coaches he hired.

  10. I listened to the presser and a few things stood out..

    1. A lot of 'why weren't we doing this before' moments. But glad to see that they are. Actually Dan  Morgan sitting behind Fitt and seeing what went wrong may actually be a good thing.

    2. Canales talking about how he has never been in a pass rush meeting before but is now the HC at 1st rings some alarm bells but at the same time as a HC you dont need to be master of everything. Im a Project Manager IRL and you rely on your subject matter experts to handle their responsibilities and I like that he is eager to learn but trusts his staff.

    3. Getting the coaching staff and the scouts on the same page makes all the sense in the world.

Canales seems so young and his giddy personality seems to reinforce that but I need to remind myself his a Pete Carrol descendant and if he can grow into that we have a helluva coach on our hands.

I seriously can’t believe there are people who are actually defending Tepper in here

    good lord

This wasn’t much of a secret about the play calling. Some of you can spin it anyway you want but as long as he owns this team we are f*cked.

And while we’re at it, Tepper was the one that didn’t let Scott trade Burns to the Rams for two 1st rounders

Dude, this isn't an all or nothing conversation. Tepper can make good decisions AND bad ones. Both can be true, but I forgot this is the internet. My bad.

I also give him credit for cutting his losses on Rhule and Reich when it was clear they weren't the answer.  That was millions of his dollars he was throwing away for a chance to get better.

I think this is lost on most people. I like the Tepper is trying to make this thing work. I like that he takes big swings. I also like that money is not a reason to keep a bad coach.

"That’s what made Panthers owner David Tepper and GM Scott Fitterer’s directive this past winter to new head coach Frank Reich worth discussing. They told Reich not to hire people he knew. They wanted the best coaches, not coaches who Reich could personally vouch for. That’s a massive difference."

    https://www.si.com/nfl/2023/03/22/panthers-coach-frank-reich-hiring-assistants-david-tepper

He was told not to hire people he was familiar with.  The same thing the Giants did with Dabboll and looked how it turned out...

Hire the right HC and let him decide who he wants on his staff.  Then it's easier to hold him accountable IMO.  We had a group of individuals with all different philosophies that went behind each others backs.  Like I said the good news is he let DC pick his guys this time.

See I dont read that as he was FORBADE from hiring people he knew, more that he encouraged to make a broad search and if people he knew were the best then hire them, but make a broad search.

Tepper is a business centric guy. The 'not allowing him' narrative doesn't make business sense.

I dont think Reich ever had a solid plan in mind on how to run the team, never mind find staff that supported that.
