Panthers get Leonard to help fill void along defensive line

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Carolina Panthers addressed their biggest need Tuesday by acquiring defensive tackle Louis Leonard from the Cleveland Browns for a 2010 late-round draft pick.

The Panthers were left with a hole on the defensive line after starter Maake Kemoeatu, Carolina's top run-stuffer, ruptured his Achilles' tendon less than 30 minutes into the first practice of training camp.

While Carolina may still look to get more help at the position, the 6-foot-4, 325-pound Leonard could contend for the starting job. Leonard played all 16 games for the Browns last season, including four starts, and had 31 tackles.

"Getting him in here right now, we'll get a little over 10 days to work with him and at least put him in the rotation," Panthers general manager Marty Hurney said. "We'll see how it all works out. We think he's got ability and we think he's a good player. He's 25 years old, he's young and he's continuing to improve. We certainly feel like he can be in the mix."

In turn the Browns get a late pick for a player who was no lock to make the regular-season roster. Leonard recently got into an argument with defensive line coach Bryan Cox during practice and was forced to run laps. He also may have been an odd fit in the Browns' 3-4 defense.

In Carolina, he'll likely quickly move to the front of a thin group. Nick Hayden, who has played in two NFL games, and undrafted rookie Marlon Favorite have been alternating as starters. The Panthers struggled defending the run in two of three preseason games.

The Panthers made room on the roster by waiving undrafted rookie defensive tackle Lonnie Harvey. The team had to make one other move later Tuesday to get to the 75-player limit.

Leonard was signed by San Diego in 2007 after going undrafted out of Fresno State. He was later waived by the Chargers and St. Louis before signing with the Browns during the middle of the 2007 season.

Leonard could see some time in Thursday's preseason finale against Pittsburgh. But Hurney wouldn't rule out making more moves to help with depth at defensive tackle.

"We're going to continue looking everywhere," Hurney said. "We'll remain flexible like we always try to do."

    • Bryce and Dave will determine how many games this team wins next year. It’s not on the WRs. The RBs. LBs. This is about 2 things: 1. Can Bryce continue to come up big in the few key downs that decide most games?  2. Can Canales evolve his play calling to counter punch like the big boys do. Half time adjustments.  teams that score 30+ points on the regular win more games than not. That’s on Bryce and Dave. The offense is top 10 at every position group, save for TE and QB. A baller TE is gravy but not crucial when the receivers are dudes.  The defense is the defense. It’ll be better this season, hopefully by a large margin, but Dave/Bryce is really where it’s at.
    • Normally I'd wholeheartedly agree with this. But I feel like teams figured out this offense after the Raiders game. Bryce was so inept the first 2 games that we couldn't really even run the offense. Dalton's first game showed what we had. But after that game, coverages got a lot tighter and windows were smaller. When Bryce came back in, his ability to extend plays made a big difference. It's really difficult to stop a QB that can beat/escape 1on1 tacklers. It puts a lot of pressure on the defense when you blitz. And he was completing throws in tight coverage with anticipation. Point being Bryce wasn't throwing to wide open receivers that were schemed open by the offense. Occasionally yes. But not often.
    • With the additions we've made to our roster combined with the state of the division and the conference as a whole there is no excuse for this team not to make a legitimate push for 8-9 wins. Anything less is honestly inexcusable. There will be no more free passes for being a doormat in this iteration of the league where even mediocre teams are competing for playoff spots.
