There is no hindsight. He had 2 years left on his rookie deal. It was unnecessary.
You just knew the injuries would start right after the ink dried, huh? Pfft, no hindsight....
You're forgetting how high Christian's stock was at the time. Barring a career threatening injury Zeke's money was the starting point.

The market is fluid but we were the team that "set" the current market, as Kamara and Cook's deals followed in the next few months. I don't expect we will see a new highwater mark for a bit after the cap drop. Drake and Aaron Jones are the only real threats this offseason and I don't see record deals being signed in either case. Then you have Chubb, Barkley and Ronald Jones in 2022. It's possible it happens that year but I wouldn't make a substantial bet on it.
You never know, we aren't the only extremely stupid front office in the NFL, that is for certain.
The market was $15m/yr for the top RB in the league at the time. Hurney had a guy that was even better, and managed to only pay an extra $1m/yr more for him. That's good negotiation on both parts.
I totally get you. The debate over whether the position is overvalued in general is completely valid, but relative to his peers it was good deal and arguably a bargain on Hurney's part.

Easy to say with hindsight. He was looking inhumanely durable at the time and if that continued we would have had to pay more or someone else would have at the end of his rookie deal.

It was a crazy overspend. The market was SET by us, that is a classic Hurney move. The other big recent deals came AFTER the CMC contract. I'm not saying CMC isn't worth $16 mil, I'm saying NO NFL RB is currently worth that. Ask all those teams that have been paying top 5 RB money over the past 5-7 years.
It's not what smart, winning franchises do. It isn't a coincidence that we haven't been a smart nor winning franchise.
Dallas set the market with Zeke months before CMC's deal.

He isn't some unicorn player. He is the same thing Ladainian Tomlinson, Marshall Faulk or any of these other high caliber dual threat feature backs were. That doesn't change that he is a HOF talent, however.
The thing that you are failing to see is that RB's don't win games based on being great, especially in the modern NFL. It isn't a requirement to have an elite or HOF caliber RB to win a Super Bowl. The post you are responding to is absolutely correct. There is a reason why most of these recent Super Bowl champions don't have large sums of money tied up at RB. What you do largely see in those teams is them having elite or HOF caliber QB's in the overwhelming majority of those games. That isn't an accident.
"He not special, just another hall of fame dual threat RB" is a nonsensical take IMO. I also think he's a more natural receiver than either and could play it full time if he had to, but that's beside the point.
I'm not arguing about the value of the RB position in the modern NFL. I take issue with everyone acting like it was another crazy overspend on Hurney's part. You can argue about whether it's justified on the field but the market is what it is. He locked in the top RB in the league for just a little more than the going rate.

Everyone should take a look at the starting RBs for the last 20 years of Super Bowl winners and decide if a top paid RB is really that important to winning a championship
Why in the year of our Lord 2021 are we still talking about McCaffery like he's just a RB.
A 26 year old Alvin Kamara got 5 years/$75m ($15m/yr)
A 29 year old Tyler Lockett got 3 years/$30m ($10.25M/yr)
We have both of them combined in one guy, which makes for a defensive coordinator's worst nightmare, and he's only 24 years old. 4 years/$64m ($16m/yr).
If you want to argue that due to the position's short life no RB should be getting that much money that's fair, but this idea that Hurney overpaid is ridiculous. CMC is barely the highest paid player at his position and is by far the most valuable.

If Houston wanted Christian the deal would have probably happened by now.
But just to play along: lock in Davis and ideally Samuel too.

He's never missed this much time so we're in uncharted waters, but he's young and a workout warrior so I'm not worried about it.

The whole Watson fetish at this point is just stupid. We just simply don't have the team at this point and I'd really hate to go through the whole Cam is carrying the entire team thing again with Watson, which will happen if we trade for him at the price that's being thrown around. He'll be a lot cheaper(trade price wise) next year any who.
CMC ended the “no weapons for Cam” talk. Cam never had an offense as good as this current one.
No, it’ll be like RG3 where we’ll be ridiculed for the decision if he doesn’t live up to his pricetag.
-
We’re getting into the weeds a bit here. You can say technically two different GMs so it’s two different approaches but from Tepper/the teams perspective we made sweeping changes to the roster last year and we’re continuing to next year. There’s just a new person in charge of making the moves. It doesn’t have to be a complete fire sale to qualify.
Hell, I think losing Greg, Luke, and Cam made it a rebuild by default, but you can call next season a second rebuild if that makes you feel better. -
Last year was to rebuild the winning culture

? A context clue is a hint found within a sentence, paragraph, or passage that a reader can use to understand the meanings of new or unfamiliar words most typically from books.
Like: She was the cynosure of all eyes for the rest of the evening. cynosure meaning the focus of attention
So your context here would be for from which has many definitions.
preposition: from-
indicating the point in space at which a journey, motion, or action starts."she began to walk away from him"
-
indicating the distance between a particular place and another place used as a point of reference."the ambush occurred 50 yards from a checkpoint"
-
-
indicating the point in time at which a particular process, event, or activity starts."the show will run from 10 to 2"
-
indicating the source or provenance of someone or something."I'm from Hartford"indicating the date at which something was created."a document dating from the thirteenth century"
-
indicating the starting point of a specified range on a scale."men who ranged in age from seventeen to eighty-four"
-
indicating one extreme in a range of conceptual variations."anything from geography to literature"
-
-
indicating the point at which an observer is placed."you can see the island from here"
-
indicating the raw material out of which something is manufactured."a varnish made from copal"
-
indicating separation or removal."the party was ousted from power after sixteen years"
-
indicating prevention."the story of how he was saved from death"
-
indicating a cause."a child suffering from asthma"
-
indicating a source of knowledge or the basis for one's judgment."information obtained from papers, books, and presentations"
-
indicating a distinction."the courts view him in a different light from that of a manual worker"
So gonna go with 3 as I did. Other than that your sentence has nothing to do with college or being famous or getting famous at, etc.I'll spell it out for you more carefully next time

I don't know you.
When someone says Tepper is going out of his way to get two people from SC that's what they mean. If you meant "Tepper is going out of his way to get two people who went to school at Clemson" then say that poo. Makes much more sense the second way.Context clues my friend it's literally their only connection to SC and each other.
My point is both are especially famous in the Carolinas. I was in Asheville two years ago and someone was rocking a Watson Clemson jersey well after the fact. I can only imagine how popular him and Trevor are in South Carolina. Tepper wants to move the stadium from one of the most popping places in the state to the back of the Carowinds parking lot just to get more money out of SC. There's no doubt in my mind that it's factoring into his push.

You know exactly what I mean.

I really think the idea of having an franchise quarterback from South Carolina has consumed Tepper to the point where he'll give up just about anything to land Watson or Lawrence.
-
Forget him mentoring anyone here if he's actually disgruntled but that's for the best IMO.
-
I didn't even make the SC connection Tepper will trade the farm
-
I bet Houston wants Burns and Chinn + picks and we keep offering McCaffery.
-
Strong words here he may have ears on this for real
There remains some confusion as to what was actually reported, or speculated, or just plain made up about the Carolina Panthers and some trade offer for Deshaun Watson earlier this week.
But I can assure you of this much: Carolina is beyond smitten with Watson and owner David Tepper is fairly consumed by the prospect of landing him and no matter what happens with this transcendent young quarterback (and I still believe he is dealt at some point), the Panthers are going to play some role in the process. They might not be able to secure him, ultimately, and others clearly possess higher draft capital, but when it comes to Watson, Tepper's aim is true and their desire is real.

Wouldn't you want to know the skill set of the all the QBs so you can put "your guy" in perspective?

We were so unlucky with Curtis. By the time he got healthy and really rolling the offense had mostly moved on. The guy's too talented to be a 4th option.

I can understand making suggestions like "we need a better O-line", but I don't care who the player is. There's no way in hell I'd give them a say in the roster.
Depends on what "say" entails for me. QB advocating for a free agent is fine but not suggesting cuts or playing GM.

Wilson trying to escape bad pass protection and landing here would be hilarious

I’d call his bluff if I were Houston. May walk away with nothing but the alternative is going to cost league owners much more

So now a second round pick is the deal breaker? Omg this is incredible
Becomes a big deal when you have one o-lineman on the roster, a poor defense, and it's the highest you'll be picking for the next 3 years.
