I like it all except for cutting Teddy and trading for Minshew. You're piling another CAP hit onto the team in Minshew to be a bridge QB.

Agreed there is 0 reason to trade for a QB, Teddy's contract has significantly less dead money after this season, and that is the perfect segway to a future starter at the QB position, this season or next.

I personally am on the fence regarding Mac over Fields or Lance to SF at #3. Considering Shanahan has worked with RGIII (Athlete) and Ryan (Traditional) I can't commit to a QB selection, I just don't think anyone knows. When you think about how much the (SF) runs the ball, having a run threat at QB that can deliver just takes the offense up a tic, so I'm inclined to believe Fields or Lance heads out West.

I could see ATL passing on a QB considering the financial ramifications of the Ryan re-structure. They essentially locked themselves in for two more years. He's a dead money hit of $65M 21' / 40.5M 22' / 15.6M 23'. Sitting a first round QB a season is one thing, but two years...that's a long time to wait for the investment. I could see them trading back, or selecting Pitts. Pitts with Jones, and Ridley take that passing attack with Ryan and a solid OL to a different level. And when Jones and Ryan are gone you still have two elite offensive weapons for the next QB.

I do think we will need to trade up, but I believe it will have to be to #5, I do think Lance or Fields will still be there unless someone jumps to #4, and Mac Jones is not the pick at #3. There's a lot to unpack with this draft and just under a month before it all comes to head.

  2. Not to mention a year off to train, he's listed at 6'1 / 185 that's not a Philly Brown type like someone mentioned. Philly was 5'11 / 175 as a rookie.

I don't know why people can't be happy with the fact we are looking at unconventional options, and turning over stones.

Roy should be the NT. Fox will probably be an OLB.

Nah my friend, Fox is a 3, or a 5 tech on the DL. Burns, and Reddick as the OLB's in an Odd front, Matos has experience in a 2pt stance, then add in Haynes / Miller / Luvu as depth on the edge of the front 7.

Can someone explain why they needed to add voided years to the deal rather than just a 1 year deal?

I do believe it allows them to keep the cap hit for ''this'' season lower. The voidable years allow you to artificially spread out the bonus money.

Another good example is JuJu's contract with PIT, it's set up in similar fashion.

every year it’s the same for Bama. The problem is most Bama guys just don’t pan out in the NFL.

Their QBs, and DBs tend to fall into that trend, the WR / OL / DL / LB / HB tend to translate over consistently overall -- You could include their S's as well in most cases regarding some NFL success.

  6. It's easier to replace Teddy Bridgewater than it is to replace Cam Newton. That's what it boils down to, Cam didn't fit the rebuild plans, and they needed someone to cover the gap as they turned the roster over the course of the next 2-3 years, there's a reason the vast majority of veterans were moved on from in the 2020 off-season by release or retirement and we ate all that dead money then & still some now.

There's also a reason all of the 2021 FA's are around 26 years old and on primarily 1-2 year deals aside from a couple that are 3 yr deals. The real cap space opens for us in 2022 / 2023 -- by then the rookie will have a couple seasons of experience, guys like Burns, and Moore will be accounted for financially and Brown will just be entering his 4th season with a 5th year option as a 1st round choice.

If things are managed well, and we get Fields / Lance -- we could be set up to be in a very good situation, there's a lot to look forward to, this draft / QB situation is key.

I don’t know if we are just lowballing everyone or they simply don’t want to come back here.

I'd wager they were offering relevant value based on where he would be in the rotation. Efe is 28, or 29 not a lot of developmental years left if any.

At this point he is what he is, which is a solid rotational piece. I think Morgan Fox basically took that over as he can play inside and out as well, but seems to have a little more production and is younger.

I'd have to research to be certain but that is the impression I have from a casual view of some of the moves made so far.

Stopping the run is obviously important.  But it’s a passing league today, and getting pressure is much more important.  I agree that Perryman is very good against the rush, and a second year of Brown in the middle getting more comfortable should also help.  Those two could be the key.  The front 7 is legit there’s no way around it.

The secondary tho, outside of Chinn is absolute garbage.  Can a great front 7 mask that?  It can to an extent, but I would def feel more comfortable with atleast one real good CB.  There’s still some relatively young upside vets available who they can bring in like Kevin King or Dunbar (Fitterer connection).  I was personally hoping for Xavier Rhodes he would have been perfect 🤷🏻‍♂️.  Rashaan Melvin better not be the only signing that’s all I’m saying as this defense looks ready to compete.

If the Panthers didn’t need a QB so badly as well I would be banging on the table for a CB at 8..

Jackson, played well (11 PBU, and 3 INTs, 10 in his 3 year career), he's far from garbage, injuries are a concern, but he gutted it out through injuries and is one of the few guys that generates turnovers. Troy Pride is also not ''garbage'' he continued to improve as the season went on.

Due Jackson's size he's more of a #2 / match up option, but that's what bigger DBs like Melvin or Rasul in the past are here for. I think we will draft another corner that is 6' + to add more size at this position to continue to allow us to better match up versus the 6'2'' + WRs in the NFC South (Evans, Jones, Thomas).

  9. Good read / clips with details on what we're getting with this lineman.

Pat Meyer spoke specifically at the Senior Bowl about the ability to judge a player’s potential to improve his pad level from tape alone:

“I think you can,” said Meyer. “I think you can if you study it and watch a guy long enough you can see if he’s tight in the hips, can he bend his knees, can he bend his power angles, can he bend his ankles, his knees, his hips? When you watch film, is he a little bit more top-heavy than the next guy?”

“I think that’s something you can evaluate when you’re watching film.”

The contracts aren't necessarily bad but I don't see why you'd target depth offensive linemen on the first day of negotiations since you could end up getting them at a cheaper price if you just waited a little longer. They definitely seem to be going for versatility among the offensive line though, which is good to see.

Because we aren't the only team that needs OL depth, OL is one of the least talented position groups overall in the NFL. Just competent play, or below avg play will see a guy get signed.

    Seriously.

These two are no better than Reed and Miller who we signed for a fraction of the cost.

Miller - $3,970,000 was what he earned in 2020 (Erving comp)

    Schofiled - $1,500,000 ''  '' (Elfein comp)

These signing are on par when you look at guaranteed money / length. 2M guaranteed per for Elfien a former 3rd rounder, and 8M over TBD as the details are pending on Erving a former 1st round selection by CLE.

Considering coach Rhule has OL coaching chops at the NFL level, I'm willing to see this play out.

Reed wasn't even an FA signing during the traditional period, so naturally he'd make less.

14 million in guaranteed money to two guys who have battled injuries and have been largely disappointments...

The more things change the more they seem to stay the same around here

You have to replace the depth we lost, neither Miller, or Schofield had high merits and played well, as bad as people here mock the OL they finished middle of the pack last season even with all of the injuries.

We don't have the cap to sign a top tier FA on the OL, the price is too high, so the thing both these guys add is the fact they can both plug and play anywhere on the OL.

    Elfein - G or C

    Erving - T, G, and C

These are value signings, and allow us to BPA in the draft is needed in case an OL prospect we like is not there.

  13. Going back and reading these old scouting reports can be funny...

The point being no one ''truly'' knows what's going to happen a lot of it is based off of preference, Cam had a similar ill regard around him when we had the #1 overall pick.

In most cases the team does their homework on these guys, and to be fair, when we talk about Lance, he possesses a lot of traits that translate to the NFL, will he need time, it's possible, you don't know until you have them in meetings, practice, etc. And considering TB's contract and dead money he may be here to be that bridge QB for a guy like Lance who may need some time.

But IMO, you draft traits that can't be taught (athleticism to change the game, and arm talent, dudes don't get clocked by GPS at 20/21+ MPH by accident)

    I love the internet.

What does an ex-NFL QB know about QB play? Nothing, when it doesn't fit with your narrative.

Or maybe go watch some film...they even covered the pro style aspect when Wentz was coming out of that school as well.

Do some homework, just because a former player comments, doesn't mean it's always backed by research. There are plenty of terrible takes from former players in the media.

  15. He talking out his a**, NDSU runs a pro style drop back passing game, lazy analysis. However, with Lance's skill set they can DO MORE THAN TAHT.

Hell even LSU, ran the RPO, and option offense with Burrow. Hell, if he watched a Panther's game he'd see we did that with Teddy too.

Jones isn't a franchise QB, he's more of a system fit than Lance since he is limited athletically. And if we were to draft a guy like Jones, you may as well just keep TB who is better than Jones.
