I’m surprised someone has finally decided he’s no longer a “young qb”

They have to pay him he's a great WR and he and Bryce have great chemistry
Piggy backing off what @LinvilleGorgementioned, I don’t think Canales puts much stock into individual players so much as he values his precious scheme.
circumstances are obviously unclear and age is a factor but Thielen had good chemistry with him too.
otoh he loves “his guys” so who knows people are complex shits difficult

Because he played well against man coverage which he saw quite infrequently?
The lack of man coverage hints something else to me: teams do not respect the Panthers passing game.
Puca is right at the same rate.
I think it just means both offenses are good at moving them around and hiding them in bunch formations etc.

Intelligent, big, strong receivers who run good routes, know how to get open, catch damn near every ball thrown their way and come up clutch in big moments don’t sign for cheap and barring injury have very long and successful NFL careers. I sincerely hope Dan and co recognize what they have.
They already let him walk once lol

It’s not really hardball.
What else do you call forcing a player to risk life and limb playing with Bryce for a year for chump change

. Do you think his agent is telling him now’s the time to get an extension averaging 30-400-3TDs a year?
The guy paid on commission? I can guarantee you that’s what he’s saying actually.
Risking commission on 1.08 million dollars for a chance at commission on 30 over 3 is an easy calculation to make.

When people mentioned reasonable deals for a player in his position, you started talking about him holding out. What would he be holding out for? That's it, top league wideout money.
How many times do I need to post Josh Palmer

If you sit out a year and don’t have 3 years accrued you are an ERFA again. It’s that simple. There’s no way there’s a loophole that you are an UFA after 2 years accrued and you skip RFA year when you have 3 accrued seasons.
Actually upon further review it not actually clear what would happen. Google AI (I know) says “it may” lead them to being an ERFA again.

Just now, WhoKnows said:
WTF? You think that he hold out and gets unrestricted FA because he hasn’t accrued 3 seasons. What are you smoking? If he holds out in 2026, he’s likely an ERFA in 2027 and an RFA in 2028. Basically loses a whole year of pay.
I mean unless the rules are lying to me.

Highly doubt it's going to happen. For whatever reason, the Panthers seem hesitant to commit to Coker. There's been whispers about his conditioning leading to questions about how much work he's putting in. That's not a guy you want to make a serious commitment to long-term. We're in a great situation right now with him. We can tender him at a pretty high level for not a ton of money and then he's an RFA after next season. We essentially control his rights for two more years with no need to make a serious commitment right now.
You’re right about the team not seeming to value him. I mean poo they let him hit waivers and were starting XL for most of the year.
maybe he laughed when Canales thought Torrey Lanez was someone from his younger days.

Lose him in 2027? That’s not happening. He’s locked into an ERFA for 2026 and he’s a RFA in 2027. For $7M or so we tender him as a 1st rounder. Is anyone giving up their 1st for Coker after 1 more year with Young?
There’s no sitting out for two years. We can think about the extension after 2026 and we still take advantage of the RFA year and extend him beyond that.
You are incorrect. RFA only kicks in after three years accrued service. If he held out in 2026 he’d only have two accrued seasons and would then become an unrestricted free agent and could sign anywhere.
thats very unlikely of course as the panthers would certainly trade him, but you fundamentally misunderstand the situation.

Does Coker want his deal yet?
You’re right. Maybe Coker actually wants to make less next season than our 40 year old long snapper.

Yes I was, but there are several posts including yours that he should or will hold out if not offered top league wide out money. I just inserted a WR name we can all recognize.
Not a single person in this thread has suggested he get “top league wideout money”

This is what I was thinking while reading the original post. He is going to get a very team friendly deal for three years at the most. This thread was teeming with posts like we are going to have to pay him Tee HIggins money or he's gone.
You’re the first person to mention tee Higgins
Josh Palmer on the other hand….

Hold out for what? They aren't required to pay him anything if he doesn't sign it, nor can another team sign him.
That would be a very bad look for a guy that is just starting to get his career off the ground.
If he is smart, he keeps the length of the deal very, very short(ideally 1 year) and he bets big on himself.
Teams would be interested in a sign and trade for him.
To flip this around, the panthers would then be in a position where they either get nothing from him and lose him in 2027 or trade him to recoup value.
or do the most panthers thing which is do a desperation extension after he’s held out for half the season and gotten fat.

That's why I say offer him a new contract at the rate I suggested. If he were to out perform it then we can discuss redoing it or trade him.
So a one year deal for 12 mil, basically? Darnell Mooney got that this year.
if I was his agent I’d hold out and get a sign and trade worked out. Tampering doesn’t exist anymore. I mean Jesus the bills gave Josh Palmers bum ass 3 years 29 mil in 2025. He put up comparable numbers in an actual nfl offense.
The top free agent WR in 2026, assuming Jerry locks down Pickens, is looking like morbidly obese Deebo Samuel.
his agent should tell him to hold out while he sends pictures of XL to Dan Morgan every day.

He doesn't have it until 2027. He has to take what the Panthers offer for 2026. After that he has leverage.
Or he holds out. Happens literally all the time.
If nothing else, pride shouldn’t allow him to play for a team paying him less than Xavier legette.

I would give him a 3 yr $15M with 12 guaranteed.
So he holds out in 2027 instead?
I wouldn’t take that. Panthers are facing a murderers row next season and were already primed to regress anyway.
and again, gotta strike while you have leverage. He has it right now and the panthers don’t.

Just now, Billy Goat said:
Wouldn't it be wise to give him a deal that ties him down until they need to offer TMac a new deal, so 3 years? Then they can reevaluate and maybe let him go when they need to offer Tmac big money.
Probably, yeah.
but if you look at the free agent WRs this year (absolutely dire) and what other WRs have gotten (Garrett Wilson lmao) he’s gonna want more.

Jalen is the most productive receiver in the league per routes run.
now obviously this is just routes run/total yards and the scheme can play havoc with this calculation but he’s in good company. Puca is number 2.
im not sure that x axis is relevant, but my god Metcalf is just getting mugged.
Per next gen stats Jalen reached the top speed in the playoffs. Newton’s first law of motion stays winning.
Coker was also the best looking player on the field against the rams. To me he looks just like a young anquan boldin.
Coker made just over 830k in 2025. He is an Exclusive rights free agent in 2026. This means if the panthers tender him with a one year contract based on the league minimum, he has to play here or nowhere else. He’s not allowed (wink wink) to negotiate with other teams
In 2025 the ERFA was 1.03 million, or 3.1% what Joe person claims Bryce Young is worth annually.
three years is the cutoff to become vested in the NFL pension, with higher benefits per year accrued after that. For those that have never heard of a pension, back in the day before boomers “two in the heart, one in the head’d” future generations, your job handled your retirement.
Three years of service also unlocks a whopping five years of health insurance; big deal for a player who still qualifies for his parents coverage. Great system, NFL. Roman gladiators were treated better.
Electro, I just became a fan when Bryce got here and I can only name three people on the team. Why does this matter?
NFL players don’t make money for very long. 40% never get a second contract. A season ending injury can happen at any moment, especially when your qb is a blimp commander who can’t see over the offensive line.
Ickey was in line for a massive payday that he absolutely earned. He lost generational wealth (Chris rock joke here) with that patellar injury and who knows if he’ll ever play the same again. He’s certainly not going to get that new contract which is rough but it’s the way things go.
Coker absolutely should not play another down for the Carolina panthers without a new contract. He just had a huge coming out on the national stage and has the numbers and tape to back it up. He's the best wide receiver on the team. Yes I know tet got (a very chintzy) thousand yards but Coker is pound for pound the better player. And that’s saying something because Jalen loves him some orange chicken.
If he was a free agent this year he’d be the top WR on the market.
Panthers have a lot of (honestly very easy) cap choices to make. For whatever reason they’ve already verbally committed to Bryce’s fifth year and are floating a three year extension. They’ve started hemorrhaging offensive linemen, soul of the team JJ Jansen will need his 1.4 million if he comes back, and of course you gotta lock down Leadership Council stalwart Christian Rozeboom.
I would argue that instead of giving the worst qb in the league over the past three years another fuging dime you lock up and reward Jalen Coker. This shows the rest of the team that production is valued, regardless of draft position, and keeps Jalen in the building and team training program. Again, Jalen likes to eat.
Will the panthers recognize this? I wish I could say the panthers head coach is good at evaluating wide receivers but….yeah. Also Canales let him clear waivers to begin with.
Anyway Jalen should be the top contract priority fug Bryce fug Canales Hail Satan

He was a solid defensive coordinator here but I don’t really see why McDermott should be held in much higher regard than Ron Rivera on the whole. Sean got his own Cam Newton like Ron and still couldn't get past the conference championship
I mean in his defense there was a good team in his way a lot of those years. Sucks but you can’t control a top 5 all time qb being in his prime against you. Same way the early 90s chiefs couldn’t get past the bills.

From another guy on another forum regarding BTT rate. Pats fan without a dog in the fight
“No. It’s not deep balls - it’s passes that gain a lot of yards.
In terms of completed air yards (total ball travel through the air) he was #20 in the league. Top five are: Stafford, Maye, Prescott, Lawrence, and Darnold with Goff at 6.
When adjusted per completion, Young is 10th worst of QBs who qualify at 4.8 air yards per completion. He’s tied with Tua and Shadeur. Below him are Nix, Cousins, Geno, Dillon Gabriel, Kyler Murray, Throw Rogan, and Brady Cook.
League avg is 5.8.
The top of the CAY/CMP list is: Lamar with 7.7, Marcus Mariota at 7.6, Maye 7.5, Stafford 7.4, Mills 7.1, and Darnold & Lawrence are at 7 yards a piece.”
and another….
”I'm pretty sure "big time throws" are just a subjective thing given by whoever at PFF is charting the game for a throw that's really good, a big play could still not be a "big time throw" if it's like underthrown but the guy was wide open or a tight six yard throw could be big time if it was fired through triple coverage to convert 3rd down or whatever. It's just "nice throw" with a stat nerd gloss.
Bryce was 17th in total # of throws 20+ yards downfield and would've easily been worse if guys like Lamar, Burrow, Purdy, Daniel Jones, etc. hadn't missed time. I can believe he was pretty ok at hitting downfield throws when he had the right look but he wasn't very prolific about it (which is why all these stats boosting him are rate stats instead of volume) and 1-2 nice tosses a game were drowned by the entire rest of his game which is why he was 36th in intended air yards per throw regardless of anything he did downfield (which again, may have been ok but on very middling volume)”
