When was the last time we had back to back winning seasons?
(Yup never.)
Peppers
Marshall
Wharton
Hangartner
Gamble
Shockey
Smith
Mitchell
Gross
Hardy
These are the names we let walk and still have not been able to replace became we go cheap in FA. What's the point in drafting well if you don't reload or replace the players you lose? We have still yet to have signed Can and Luke and its possible one or the other could walk as well knowing this franchises history.
Gross retired. So did Wharton and Hangartner. Gamble too after being told he wasn't coming back.
Smith was let go for numerous (valid) reasons. And Hardy, well...that story's been told.
Mitchell was offered a higher contract than he was worth (as the Steelers have since learned). And the other three you mentioned were all gone before Gettleman ever got here so discussing them is pointless in current context.
Cam and Luke are both set to receive new contracts shortly, probably next offseason when we have more cap room (which we;ll have because our GM is refraining from making dumb decisions).
And drafting well is the foundation for everything else, so it's useless without that.
You'd be wise to remember that out current 'franchise history' is in only its third year. Hurney doesn't work here anymore, so talking about how he ran the team is in this context, again, useless.
-
And your acting as if Gettleman is the one behind all our success.
Rivera is a pretty bad game manger I'll give you that, but evaluator? depth chart? Oh I forgot Gettleman prize FA acquisitions Cason, Decoud, Harper helped Rivera out so much last season. What was Rivera suppose to do start Norman right away even though he was our worst corner the previous season? Throw Bene to the wolves? find a way some how to replace our premier pass rusher with a rookie DE?
The coach sets the depth chart, or didn't you know that? (guess not)
Benwikere and Norman both did very well as starters. Good grief. Did you even watch this past season?
Guessing you also weren't paying attention when all of the young guys talked about how they couldn't have gotten where they were as quickly without help from a good veteran teacher, a fella by the name of Roman Harper.
And Cason? He was an old charger that Rivera kept starting up to the point Gettleman cut him.
Like it or not, gettleman was a big part of our successes this past season. You can spin as hard as you want trying to take credit away from him, but you're doing a lousy job (especially since it seems you don't know some basic info).
Face it kid. You posted a stupid thread and numerous folks have called you out for it. All your efforts to defend it are just making it worse.

Have we had that much more success? Last year really was a fluke and we did no better than a Fox coached team. The NFC South has gotten weaker and our new found success comes from that. We are still running things as if Hurney was here(low fas/draft for success), we are still letting our best players walk while not picking up players to replace them, and our team is still always the bridesmaid and never the bride.
I really do think DG is a great talent evaluator and its a good thing too because if your not smart and you operate the way this org does you don't and your the brown.
When was the last time we went to the playoffs back to back?
(hint: never)
And the only good player that's walking this offseason is Hardy, and there are good reasons why that's happening.
Other than that, the list of free agents walking is nothing special.
-
Ah yes it was Gettleman master plan for our division to suck and us being able to make a playoff appearance with a 7-8-1 record. And all those things you mention had nothing to do with the players and coaches its all Gettleman
The lack of respect you have for Rivera is mind numbing. Rivera has been in asked to make chicken salad out of chicken s**t, Munnerlynn and Mitchell looked great under Rivera, they leave and automatically become mediocre. Johnson and Hardy where a bunch of nobodies before Rivera arrived. Norman and Bene two mid-late round picks from small schools who where an after thought in the draft, Rivera was the one who coached them up, changing Luke to MLB another Rivera idea.
You act as if Gettleman is drafting these can't miss prospects.
Actually, you're acting as if all of this happened independent of the GM, which is a ridiculously dimwitted notion.
Rivera is a very good technique coach and game planner, but a lousy evaluator and game manager. His depth chart decisions did a lot to hold the team back last season till injuries forced his hand.
So no, Rivera didn't 'save us' from Gettleman's poor choices. You are, in fact, the only person to suggest such (likely because most people understand it's just silly).

I wonder if Getts could get a guy like Nicks or Crabtree on a 1 year, $2-3m prove it deal next week.
The way things have been going, I could read a story that someone offered Nicks a two year seal at six million a season and I wouldn't be surprised.
-
@RapSheet
WR Kenny Britt is staying with the #Rams, source said. It’s a 2-year deal worth up to almost $14M. He got 4.3M guaranteed. Wow.
Good lord.
The year of overpayment marches on.

This. He's just a guy. If he didn't go to Wofford we would've never given him a shot nor would anyone else in the NFL.
I can agree with the notion that those circumstances helped get him the opportunity, but that's not what won him a spot on the roster.
Everyone who observed training camp commented that he had the most consistent hands of any receiver out there. And in seaaon, he made some legitimate clutch catches for us (something critics choose to ignore).
Mind you, I don't think he's back next year, but the notion that he didn't earn his roster spot last year by merit is completely off base.

Every player, even the fifth receiver on the depth chart, must be an all pro level player or it proves the front office doesn't care about winning

In all seriousness those are some awesome contracts
He points out at the link that all the contracts this offseason put together cost less than Hardy.

Miami making big moves this year, going to be a contender
To be honest, both of these moves involve taking advanyage of the Saints 'fire sale' mentality.
The Saints ship them a receiver and in return take a player off their hands whom they were going to cut anyway in addition to the pick.
The receiver given by the Saints allows them to get rid of a headache, and get compensated for it.
This, two players they were going to just cut with no recompense now have actually helped them gain something.
Smart, but also a tad lucky that the Saints are doing their bit right now.

Saints aren't done making deals. Actively shopping disgruntled CB Keenan Lewis, asking teams not to divulge their inquiries ...
So now they're asking teams not to let anyone know they're talking?

Wallace isn't somebody I'd have been interested in here.
Never sign a guy who quits on his team, and good grief don't trade something for him.

Well there you have it, was hoping for more for Wallace....but it looks as if we were going to cut him anyways. So getting a 5th is best we got offered apparently.
That's actually twice today the Dolphins have gotten something in trade for someone they were going to cut anyway.
Not bad for them.

Reads more like a 5th for Mike Wallace and a 7th.
Correct.
-
I mean it is one thing to be impatient. That is a fans right.
It's those folks who disregard the fact we have no money. Then say the reason we don't spend what we don't have, is because we strive to be mediocre.
How do you argue with folks who actually believe Gman and JR don't want to win?
You don't.
Anyone who takes that idea seriously is probably too stupid to bother with.

Panthers expect CB Teddy Williams to play big role on special teams and compete for reps on defense.

So apparently the rumor is that the Saints are trading us drew brees for our 6th ...dunno about that
Don't know where that's coming from, but zero chance I'd buy into it.

IF I really thought we had some money to spend, and weren't. I might look at it differently. The fact that Gman has had no money, I think goes a long way in saying he is doing a pretty damm good job.
But then again, I ain't 15. So my patient level is a tad higher. I like where we are heading. Have been for a few years now. My giddy has been up for a while. And I can live with that.
Pretty much.
There have been moves I haven't ultimately liked (tagging Hardy being the biggest, extending Rivera being another) but when you look at the level of success we've had - especially when compared to the rest of the team's history - and where we are now vs where we were when he got here. It's pretty easy to feel positive.

Until he was on the way out.
I'm guessing he thought that little snit would fetch more publicity, but in the end hardly anybody gave a rip (especially after they learned he wasn't exactly telling the whole truth).
As far as his persona, is he really classy or does he just have very good image handlers?
-
I know this probably doesn't mean a whole lot to some. But....Gman has only been on the job for two years.
Last year he had zero money. But to some, that is an excuse not a reality.
This year, he has a little money. But to some, he is waiting too damm long to spend it.
Yeah, that Gman character better get his act together pretty quick. I mean, hellz, he has had two years already.
And nothing to show for it!
Well, except back to back division championships, two straight playoff appearances, two straight finishes in the top eight of the league, the best two year stretch of drafting this team has ever seen, steadily improving cap space and a team atmosphere that visiting free agents have called great.
So I guess if you like those sorts of things...

Mark Davis is not happy Raiders used as Greg Hardy's leverage
cident in their past, but it won't be Hardy. Hardy's agent is Drew Rosenhaus.
“I’m saying that he’s somebody we are not negotiating with and I don’t believe we would be interested in at this point in time,” Davis said to Kawakami. “I can tell you this: It has not been brought up to me and it would have to come to me … "
Both Bay Area teams have quickly backed away from any interest in Hardy. The 49ers said they didn't want Hardy, with general manager Trent Baalke saying there's "no interest that we’ve shown, nor will.
Didn't want to start a new thread but this Hardy story took a strange twist...someone's lying
I'd put my money on it being Rosenhaus.
He's been caught doing that sort of thing before.

Damn, Rosenhaus fishing...
Shocking, right?

Letting all your players that you would like to keep walk because you can't afford them and having to replace them with stopgaps who aren't as good = Dollar Store
Retaining all of your wanted players and signing them to multi-year deals to keep important pieces together = Target.
Why is it so hard to understand how much better we've been in FA this year than last?
It's not that hard to understand.
But you have some people who don't know how to do anything but whine and b--ch.
The reason Cam isn't in a hurry to sign a contract

There's an old saying about keeping your mouth closed to avoid being thought a fool rather than opening it and removing all doubt.
To be clear, I didn't skim anything you said. You were just wrong. Rivera did have the choice to start Norman. He also had the choice to start Andrew Norwell, Jonathan Stewart and others, but chose not to. This is, by the way, the same coach who talked up guys like Sione Fua, Armanti Edwards, Captain Munnerlyn and others thay were later cut by, guess who.
And the reference to 2011 tells me a lot
especially given that the guy you're criticizing didn't arrive until 2013. And as was pointed out elsewhere, Gettleman has used half the draft picks made since taking the job on offense, plus undrafteds like Norwell and pickups like Remmers and Fozzy. Plus, believe it or not, we get to draft again this year too.
And again, FYI since this is another thing you don't seem to know, whether Newton signs an extended contract or not, the Franchise tag ensures he's here for at the very least, three more seasons.
