Good for him! I always liked him and he deserved to get paid. I wanted him back, but it's a deep draft at C and we can't afford to over-pay the whole line.
Yep, he was a team player and had worked his way into a starting role, if not here, somewhere. Hope he does great there.
Good to see these young folks' dreams coming true.
Still... we need a center. Drafting would be great but our first two rounds are certainly spoken for. Is there a great one in the third? Hope so.

That was going to be a bit too rich for our blood.

I think we all see that side--I think we are gambling that he will enter his prime and Scourton and he tear it up. I also think this deal does not go down if Ickey does not go down. I think this tells the world that we are going OT in round 1.
Yeah, I can see that happening now, too.
That's just a lot of money on the table. I hope that's a gamble that will pay off. I'm not liking our track record. I've long said Morgan can be a sucker for a good sales pitch.

So, we just basically blew our cap space on an oft-injured guy who has produced fewer and fewer sacks who also isn't much of a tackler in the run game?
Can someone explain this to me?
-
We don't have deep pockets this year. Morgan is having to sit on the sidelines of the first couple of rounds of free agency before he can dive in and begin competing.
Right now, if it's a name you're really familiar with out there... don't expect us to get them.
-
If we can grab him, great. We also need someone back there to direct the defense and basically play the Luke position.
I know what "they" call it. We should call it the Luke position.

I wouldn't be mad with this draft, but I'd like to see a safety in there, probably in place of the WR.

DJ Moore has always been a bit of an enigma. He came here young, flashed a ton of potential, but never truly grew into a real #1. He’s had a few good reasons, but yet to have a real monster season (outside of his first year with Chicago) We’re still waiting for him to blossom, but he will be 29 next season. I fear that it is too late for him at this point.
You've gotta be kidding. He's had four 1,100+ yard seasons (three with us) and two more that were basically 900 yarders, snagged 41 touchdowns in his career so far (with lousy QBs for most of his tenure).
Add in that he has been on a rapidly cycling carousel of coaches, offensive coordinators and losing teams and maybe he gets a pass. Let's see how he does in Buffalo.
Heck, I wish we'd have swung harder to get him back here, as WR2 or slot receiver. Great culture guy.

Panthers North for the win. Good luck to him. Great guy, hated to see him leave here, but he's about to work with the best QB he's ever worked with (at least on a regular basis).

There are a couple of options. One is just to not accept your commission and just pay back the Academy for your education. Alot of money for normal folk, but if you're drafted high enough it's a drop in the bucket. You'll need a waiver not to go in enlisted, but normally drafted players get waivers to join the reserves instead of active duty military. Showing that you can actually go to the NFL from a military academy is much better for recruitment than having one more officer on a ship/sub/aircraft. Things were different in the Staubach and David Robinson days. I remember Mike Wahle just paying back the Academy after getting kicked out for steroids after his junior year. Not a big deal when you're drafted in the 2nd round.
Thanks for the info!

I like it. I really like getting smart players and for such a hybrid type it's going to take one of those. You don't get into Annapolis on a pure athletics scholarship ever. The year you go in you are one of only 100 candidates (or thereabouts) with massive factors of scholarship, community service, character and commitment.
Pair that with the tape and youch. Might need to swing earlier than later.
One question, though, what about his military service requirements? Staubach had to wait out his required active service time, others have been given recruitment type positions in the off season. Not to mention that as an officer (as all Academy grads will become) he could be called to active duty at any time, especially with our current president's proclivity for sending in the Navy.

I don't know that doing an extension to get some cap relief would be having a player over a barrel. At this time, his recovery is unknown. An extension as previously described would give cap relief for us, time for Icky to fully recover without rushing back, and time to evaluate him once he does. If he is good to go, another extension reflecting that evaluation can always be done. I don't think that would destroy a locker room. I think it shows we're willing to working with players and put them and the team in a favorable position while recovering from major injury. This isn't a common situation with a major injury at the 5th year extension. I think it actually could sit well with agents and players that we take care of players.
The over the barrel part is in reference to the original post in this thread that basically argued now is the time to negotiate while his injury has him over a barrel. I think that's a terrible idea and approach to negotiating with players.

First off, you never make your team better by getting a player over a barrel on contract negotiations. Kills the locker room.
And you don't negotiate until you know what both sides have down the road. Otherwise, someone gets screwed. And that kills the locker room and/or the cap.
Stay put, wait it out and see what we've got in the month and a half before the draft. A lot can happen between now and then.

For me they either stay at 19 or make a small trade down into the mid 20s and snag an extra 2nd or something. They need to get an edge, linebacker or offensive tackle and I don’t think any other positions should really be on the table unless someone super elite fell to them
If we move down five slots or less and pick up an additional 2nd? That would seal the deal for me.
That 2nd... hard to get someone on the back end of the round or early in the second to give that one up.
Still... if that miracle swap is there, take it.

A LT is more crucial at this point than S or ILB. LT must be addressed ahead of either of those two. You won't find a LT in free agency worth a damn.
Now while I agree, there's some stuff that can happen between now and the draft. We may know more about Icky's health. We may offer Njiman better than he's getting on the FA market if our coaches feel he can be a good stop gap or move laterally. There could be some trades happening.
Me, I'm hoping Icky can get better, although that's a tall order.
Still, you are right and it should be LT, S and ILB. Those are the chessboard pieces we realistically need right now.

Thats the problem (or positive how one could view) is that after say the top 8ish all of the next tier of talent is basically the same. You could get the same level at 13 as you could top of the 2nd. Yes there are a lot of those dudes in that tier but they are all bunched together. Thats why I am screaming trade back. Same value more picks with hopefully another 1 for 27.
Take the 19, make a smart pick for a foundational player. 38 and beyond, see what it's worth to people.

We don't do well with first round trades. Up or down.
Just pick where we have it, take the best player we need and move on.
Then when the field gets a bit muddier, make your moves for the needed spots.
There's going to be a huge run on WRs as always (over valued in my opinion), there are a ton of OTs and Edge is always heavy in the first and second rounds. Grab your future starting S and ILB in rounds one and two, snag your C in three. Take trade offers to move down in rounds three and beyond for a spot in the same round plus another, even if in a future draft.
We're going to have even more holes in our roster in 2027 than we do now.

Man, I haven't watched since WCW failed and then they botched the whole Invasion story. It got incredibly stale.
I've caught a couple of episodes of Raw since it moved to Netflix. I saw pictures of this guy on social media over the weekend. You're telling me this is an actual wrestler making his first appearance?
I honestly thought it was a new version of Gillberg, but for Rhea Ripley.
He was on the indie circuit for quite a while developing this gig. It's a comedy character in the vein of the Munsters or Svengoolie. He was picked up by AEW for the last three years or so and just won everyone over.
He wrestles less than he adds comedic bits, and I'd try to describe what he does, but it's one of those you just have to see it things.
Here's a look:

Is Bryce the answer? Probably not.
Do you see another answer out there right now?
Well, do you?
Retreads and dice rolls, that's all that's available right now. Maybe work a trade for Mac Jones, send Bryce to them with that fifth year deal. Maybe San Francisco can work their magic with him like they did Purdy, Jones and Darnold.
And we'd have Jones for a couple of seasons.

Okay, I don't care what anyone said afterwards, but I frikkin' loved the Danhausen unveil at Elimination Chamber. Highpoint of the night for a PLE with only like four matches (and fairly meh ones at that).
-
Not bad reasoning. Such a long wander until the draft. We are in the desert right now.
-
He came here and did everything he could for us. And we need to remember and respect that. He's suffered from injuries for the past two seasons and like most linemen he was carrying some from before as well. Not sure if this is the end of the road for him or not, but good luck to him and his family.
Now, well, we've got a lot of work to do along that offensive line of ours.
Just like every year.

Get the smartest players at ILB, S and C. They can have immediate and lasting impacts, plus they can elevate the play of those around them, moving the powerful pieces around the chessboard more effectively.

However, take a look at smallish Kyle Louis (Pitt). He is known to be cerebral, but he is small (5'11" I think) and for that, I moved him lower. But look at the different LB events at the combine--he is near the top in most of them. I see him as a sleeper. So if we wait until the second round, we can get a solid LB.
Great info overall.
This part, though, I had missed this guy. Could we go with another smaller, smarter LB? I mean, we had the best one of all time once before... Could lightning strike twice? Sure would be nice. Could we grab ILB in the second and third rounds? We really, really could use some strength and smarts there.

BREAKING: Panthers sign QB Kenny Pickett
in Carolina Panthers
Posted
This ^.
It's a back-up QB position filling. It's a bit of improvement at QB2 and it was something that was becoming obvious. Thanks to Andy for putting in the miles here, but it's been a long career and the days were getting shorter.
