What would be the worst case scenario if we don't pick it up? Darnold balls out and, despite having $3 trillion in free cap next season, we get outbid by another team. Even in this scenario, we get a 3rd comp pick back. At that point we paid about 2 day 3 picks for one season of play. IMO, you either have him play out the rookie deal as motivation to get better. Or, you sign him 3+ years in the hopes he improves and you get a few years of quality QB play on the cheap. No point in splitting the middle.
