Last weekend, the Panthers and Browns seemed to be trending toward a Mayfield trade. However, ESPN’s Jake Trotter reports that the two sides were never close to completing the deal. According to Trotter, neither side wanted to pay the majority of Mayfield’s nearly $19 million salary he is set to make in 2022. By not finding a middle ground to pay the money, Carolina decided to trade up and select Ole Miss quarterback Matt Corral in the third round instead.

ANDRE ROBERTSWR, CAROLINA PANTHERS Panthers signed WR/KR Andre Roberts, formerly of the Chargers, to a one-year contract. Roberts, now 34, went to three straight Pro Bowls from 2018-2020 as a return man and was named a first-team All-Pro in 2018 with the Jets. The Panthers will be his fourth team since then after spending two seasons with the Bills and splitting last year between the Texans and Chargers. Roberts has six career touchdown returns, three each on kickoffs and punts.

His 8,578 combined return yards (kickoff and punt) are the most of any player in the league since 2010. We clearly cleared 30 million in order to absorb a possible Baker Mayfield or Jimmy Garoppolo acquisition. Since that’s not happening we simply save it for next season
