with all the negativity right now, I think a fun exercise would be to see if you were GM who would you have picked. It's too complicated to go back through all the trades so let's just pretend those are set in stone. Here's how I would have done it:
This will be fun to bump in a year when I am completely wrong about all of this.
FWIW this is not a complaining thread it's more of an exercise to show that for all of you negativity it's actually really hard to nail drafts in real time.
32- Ladd
46- AD Mitchell
72- Christian Haynes
101- Theo Johnson
157- Caelen Carson
200- Cedric Johnson
240- Beau Brade
Hard to do because now we know where everyone went (I would have grabbed Sanders at 72 if I didn't know he'd be there at 101)
32 - Ladd
46 - Sainristill
72 - Sanders
101 - Troy Franklin
157 - Hunter Nourzad
200 - Crumdey
240 - whoever BPA is, I don't know players this late

Man Hands is the nickname
This is an insane catch, and I love that he foreshadowed his days with the Panthers by having a non contact injury at the end of it (I kid - hopefully)

He's worthy of being on the roster for the grunt work but not at his salary. Ideally he would stay at greatly reduced salary.
Unfortunately TEs are either receivers or blockers. I heard it said Gronk was last true TE
Kittle is the full package. Dude is violent in the blocking game

Probably not worth it's own thread but I called it. New England was trying to get to 32, so the Bills did us a solid. Traded to us not division rivals. New England was targeting XL
It blows my mind how many people I see freaking out about the trade saying it was pointless to move up since we had the next pick anyway. Obviously our FO already knew or got wind of another team liking him and made the move (for basically nothing).

We need depth a rotational guys as well. If he can carve out a role then I say welcome aboard big guy.
I think he makes the team. One other thing I forgot to mention, Mike Leach passed away Dec 2022 and we promoted our DC to HC much before he was ready. Our defense took a massive step back because of this, we promoted our LB coach to DC and he also was not ready. The entire defense was a disaster last year due to external factors, if he didn’t get hurt 2022 and had continuity in 2023, legit believe he could have been a 3rd round guy. That’s a ton of ifs, but that’s what 6th round picks are for

I've watched every snap this guy has played past 4 years. He was nowhere near the top rated DL we brought in over the years, but consistently did his part. He was prime for a breakout year in 2022 but an injury really derailed him for about an entire year and he never got the momentum back. Morgan must think we can help him take the next step. 10 pounds smaller than D Brown probably, same height. Really solid run stopper. Should be able to be a rotational guy for us, probably won't be on the field much on 3rd and long

He’s got all year unless we take Rattler here in a couple hours.

He’ll be ready but we will ease him in just because he’s a rookie. Imagine he’s RB1 around week 6. XL doesn’t really matter if he is named starter or not, he will get a ton of playing time

Corbett got beat like a drum regularly as a guard before he got injured. So much so they went out a got the best FA guard available to replace him. So now, instead of putting him on the bench or on the street they are converting him to starting center. An underperforming guard coming off 2 season ending knee injuries will now be the starting center. How the hell does that sound like a wise decision?
Corbett has had one bad year in his whole career and unsurprisingly so did every other OL under whatever tf we were doing last year on offense. Agree the injury is a concern. You gotta hope he thrives at C under the new blocking scheme we’re running this year.

DJ’s strength is route running and separation. That is Franklin’s weakness. Franklin is more Chosen Anderson than he is DJ.
I wouldn’t say it’s a weakness, he’s an adequate route runner. He def isn’t DJ level, but adequate. His biggest weakness imo is can he beat getting jammed at the line in the NFL and make those contested catches he could in college against bigger stronger corners

Yes. No.

Sanders will be on the team this year, it would be irresponsible if he wasn't.
He counts $7.7 million against the cap.
If we cut or trade him, we take a $10.5 million cap hit
It would literally cost us almost $3 million more in cap space to get rid of him than it would to just have him be a backup or inactive every week.
Is there no way to trade the contract? My thought was always just let some team have him for free if they agree to take on a few mil of the contract

Luuuukkkkeeee
Did kinda hope we'd take a late round flyer on him. One pick away. We're on the clock, Sanders?
-
Great spot for him. Thought Baltimore would be on him too

Welp apparently Hines Ward played his entire career without an ACL as well. TIL

Rap on NFL network, just said Wilson had bad knee, causing drop
Wow, his career could be over. Reports say one knee no longer has an ACL (????) not even sure what that means but obviously a huge issue

Another LB off the board before Wilson. Man his medicals must have come back horribly

Actually, the weaknesses in his draft profile (avoiding blocks and needing to play with more passion and energy) says not a dawg. If you think Kuechly was a dawg, Wilson is probably your guy.
What teams say vs what teams actually do is very different. Luvu was the definition of a dawg and we didn't really try to keep him. Sanders is 10x the athlete Luvu could dream of being, but doesn't seem to have that "it" factor. They must think they can coach him up to be Shaq's replacement and help him make the leap. We will see

Wow, Sanders and Wilson both still on the board. Other GMs also aren't really high on them, not just ours.

Average Backup Or Special-Teamer
Strengths
Explosive athlete.
Rangy with good chase-down gallop to the sideline.
Burst and change of direction make him a toolsy rusher.
Hands are very sticky when he gets his chances to take the ball away.
Lateral agility to expand his short-area tackle success.
Weaknesses
Play recognition and football instincts are lacking.
Frequently fooled by misdirection in both run and pass games.
Lacks patience and leverage in his scrape, allowing cutback lanes to runners.
Pulled out of position by bait routes in his spot drops.
Pass rush could use more elusiveness when diving into A- or B-gaps.
interesting, literally every weakness is coaching related. I guess they feel he didn't have good development at uk and they can provide it. He is Shaq's replacement, so he won't play much this year anyway.

Meh, don't love it but drafted bout where his grade was.. mid 3rd to early 4th. Much rather would have gone C or Sanders but they obviously don't like him (other teams don't either)
2024 Who would you have picked
in Carolina Panthers

yeah honestly I may have taken Franklin at 72 anyway so just flip flop him with Sanders
