He finished on a hugh note, and left me hopeful he may have gotten in his bag and found a rhythm moving forward...  Robby was happy with it.  But, I'm ngl, the OL really wasn't all that bad except for Elflein, and yet, Sam had some very Clausen-like moments early.  So, although I'm encouraged by the final drive, the extremes I saw from some of the panic stuff he did earlier is troubling.

He really did not look calm or comfortable at the beginning. Let’s hope it was first game jitters and we see the 2nd quarter version moving forward. Also dear god, start Brady. He looked better than anyone not named Moton

We might can punish some defenses if we can.get CMC the ball outside the pocket or some screen plays, but I don't have any faith that this line can.open up any holes for him.

Might just need to use him in lots of reverses and other trick plays until we can find a solution at guard and center.

I do think the playbook seriously opens up with CMC in there + regular season. Coaches aren’t dumb, they know the OL is weak and will scheme for it

I don't want to get too excited against backups... but as bad as our oline is I am impressed.

A little bit of dinking and dunking in the first series, but that is an improvement for him to learn to take what the defense is giving instead of making mistakes. I'm proud of him.and I hope he has built up some confidence heading into the regular season in 2 weeks.

Can't wait to see what Brady has drawn up for him.

100% agree. I thought he looked really good moving in the pocket sans 2 plays I saw. Took what the D gave him, and hit on the intermediate throws when they counted, minus the one behind Robby. If the OL can gel (or we get Brady and Brown in there and they’re the answer) Sam can do some damage here.

The OL looked like ass and Darnold still sees ghosts and panics at the first hint of pressure. Not a good combo.

This OL is gonna have to get a lot better very quickly to give Darnold a legit shot at resurrecting his career.

Agree. It’s a huge issue if we can’t keep him clean, but I did not expect to see 2 scores and no turnovers in his half of playing time. And yes 1 probably should’ve been picked but this is better than I expected

  5. Taking a step back and not breaking down each throw 1 by 1, Sam has looked good. Not great, but good. Yes it’s second string, but for his first real game action with us I’m pleasantly surprised. If we can keep him clean (and huge if) he’s going to get better as we go on. 8.5 yards per attempt with no turnovers… I’ll take it all day.

Deals impact other deals.  Deals impact who ultimately stays and goes.

I'm a DJ guy.  Said before this deal occurred, I wanted them to address DJ first and foremost.  He is the dude.

Worth noting, DJ isn't a Rhule guy or a Fitterer guy.  Which often matters in the NFL.

and of course, then there is the whole "freakout" narrative.   Lots of people can disagree with stuff.  It doesn't mean furniture is being flipped.  It's just sports.  Bitching about stuff is half the fun of professional sports.

I agree I like bitching too, I do it a ton. I just don't think it's reasonable to think DJ is going anywhere. I don't see anything at all that we've done (including this) that would even remotely suggest that.

Why are people freaking out, it's a two year deal, and we have DJ in his 4th year now, we have his 5th year picked up, and IF ABSOLUTELY NEEDED the franchise tag.

DJ isn't going anywhere, this is set up to let Robbie play and transition to a DJ & TMJ led WR core in 2023.

I don't understand how anyone cannot see this is clearly the plan and sets up amazingly for us if TJ pans out. How can people be upset with this? The whole point of us rebuilding and starting from scratch with our cap is to make moves like this. Unbelievable.

He didn't exactly stand out in his rookie season. And he is also dealing with an injury this offseason.

If they are interested in moving him(which we don't know that they are) after taking him in the first round a couple of years ago, that should say a lot.

Fair enough, I thought he was pretty serviceable for his rookie year

I wonder if he has pre-existing conditions. Hard to think someone in shape like that could just have that happen. It was blazing hot, etc. You see it from time to time on high school and college basketball courts too. I'm more shocked they continued the game.

It resumed hours after the incident occurred after they initially suspended it. He was in stable condition at the hospital by the time it resumed.

Sprinkle in the fact that Carolina also lost a weapon like Curtis Samuel, and the organization didn't exactly do enough to create an encouraging developmental situation for Darnold.

Sounds like the writer doesn't pay attention past the first round...?

There was a certain DL out of Mississippi State who we should all recall...

Not really. known Jeffrey for years now, he had one bad incident (beating up a girl who was beating up his sister) before he started his college career. Was squeaky clean all 3 years at State, professors and coaches loved him, anyone on that staff would have told you when he left he was an absolute stand up guy. Seems Nixon's coaches gave bad feedback on him...  you couldn't find a single person on State's staff or academics that didn't like him.

I think he will be cut in the first round of cuts

There’s no way. That doesn’t make sense, why? He’s dirt cheap even if it’s just for depth at this point. I also feel if anyone can figure out how to get him motivated, it’s Rhule. No I’m not expecting it, but how incredible would it be if he emerged as a legit tackle.

I do think it’s close and he might be cut in final training camp round, but I can’t see it being in the first round.

Chicago gave NYG their 1st next year. If an offer was given to Carolina, I’m sure next year’s 1st was on the table.

Yeah that’s what I’m saying. It’s tough knowing they offered next years first plus some and we turned it down. Not saying we made the wrong choice, who knows but that Chicago 1st next year could potentially be Sam Howell if darnold ends up not working out… they should be pretty bad this year
