Chargers had the #1 defense and #1 offense one year and missed the playoffs.
You know why? Because they had a historically bad special teams.
Great point there. I forgot how good the chargers were statistically that year and guess who their defensive coordinator was?
-
what does this guy have that Stephen Hill doesn't? I mean special teams...you run down the field as fast as you can and try to get the guy to call for a fair catch and if he doesn't, you tackle the guy.
maybe there is reverse logic going on here. DBacks are receivers that can't catch...maybe WRs are DBacks that can't tackle? hmmmm
Because Hill doesn't have special teams experience. Gettleman must see something in the kid. I don't know if it's just for special teams or if he sees him competing for the nickle back role. He didn't play college football and played some WR in the NFL before jointing the Jags so he was pretty raw and may just be getting at the point where he can do something in the NFL.

I know everyone is joking about this signing carrying us to the "Superb Owl", but it really is these types of signings that can put a team in that position. You have to truly play well in all phases of this game, negating positive returns on PR/KRs can really help win a game. STs can really turn a game. (For good or bad)
Your right just ask the Patriots. We need to fix special teams and signing a bunch of free agents with special teams experience means more competition in training camp which will make us better. I wouldn't be surprised if we sign a few more guys for special teams like the linebacker from San Diego.

I guess Gilbert just left a bad taste in our mouths that just won't go away.
-
I saw he only played one defensive snap his whole career but was he a special teams ace? I am trying to understand why we are paying him over 2 million for 2 years.

Never understood why he never worked out in the NFL, he had so much praise before the draft. Ingram took a few years to develop so maybe Richardson could as well. With the right coaching maybe he could turn his career around. He wouldn't cost much and would be a better #3 than Reaves.

They are great DTs but have injury history. So chances of them playing at the same time is slim.

I don't want to have to play against Adrian Peterson twice a year.

As much as I like the guy I just don't see us drafting him.

Having bodies isn't "filling a need"
We aren't, or it should utterly horrify you if we are , simply trying to get 53 guys on the roster. We should be trying to field a team that is better than Seattle, New England.
We shouldn't be trying to hold water. We should be trying to be the best.
Michael Oher isn't addressing a need. Ted Ginn isn't addressing a need.
No but it helps having an experience vet that can get the job done decently if we are not able to draft/sign someone in that position. If we didn't sign Oher then we would be panicking come draft time and more than likely have to reach for a tackle instead of going BPA. Gettleman likes going BPA and if you have a major hole at any position it forces you to fill that position in the draft. This is a major reason players are drafted a round or two early and end up being bust. BPA over need!
-
Agree completely which is why I hope we somehow acquire more draft picks. If we could trade down and get an extra 2nd or 3rd round pick it would be like getting another starter. That's the problem because pass rusher, OT, and #2 WR are bigger needs.... and we should be able to get a really good prospect each in the early rounds.
So I hope Gettlemen plans are to take advantage of Free Agency for Secondary help and use the draft for the other stuff. .
Also if the top tackles are gone when we pick I see no reason why we can't draft a WR in the first, pass rusher and safety in the second and third then draft someone like Havenstein or a Daryl Williams in the fourth round. I could see our draft going like this
1st: Jaelen Strong
2nd: Owamagbe odighizuwa
3rd: Safety
4: Tackle
Or possibly drafting a safety in the second if Gettleman sees on that is BPA and then drafting DE Flowers or Preston Smith in the 3rd. Either one seems like a winner to me.

Absolutely, but several of those moves were from the pre-cap era. Moves like Brees and Woods on were also exceptional values. Revis to NE is the only huge-money example I can think of that arguably put a team over the hump, but NE had the money to do it because of masterful cap handling and solid talent across the rest of the roster.
Well the Patriots had Lafell, Browner, Revis and Blount this year and each played a major role in the super bowl run. While I understand and mostly agree with what you say I must say that free agency does matter quiet a bit but it's all about not over spending, finding the hidden gems and not signing a bust.

Jeez louise
This is a crazy offseason.
The jets getting a good back up QB with plenty if experience is far from a crazy move.

I suggest you actually go take a look at the free agent signings of these teams for the past few years. I'll even help you - here is 2012: https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2012/01/12/2012-free-agent-tracker/
Know who Seattle's biggest external FA addition was? Matt Flynn, but they DRAFTED Russel Wilson
Know who NE's biggest external FA addition was? Brandon Lloyd, but they DRAFTED Chandler Jones
Know who Indianapolis' biggest externa FAl addition was? Cory Redding, but they DRAFTED Andrew Luck
Know who Pittsburgh's biggest external addition was? Jerricho Cotchery, but they DRAFTED David DeCastro
Know who Green Bay's biggest external addition was? Tony Hartgrove, but they DRAFTED Nick Perry
Know who eventual-SB champ Baltimore's biggest external addition was? Corey Graham, but they DRAFTED Bernard Pierce
Yes, these teams are now able to sign big names, buf it's because they spent seasons building internally under quality talent leadership and being fiscally responsible, much like Carolina is doing now. You and many of the other people whining about free agents look like a clown when actual FA data are reviewed.
Drafting well and finding UDFA are key to being successful in the NFL. If it was all about free agency then Washington would have won quiet a bit of super bowls in the past 10 years. Finding the Right free agent can help win a Super Bowl as well but it's just not as common. Patriots got Browner and Revis, Lafell and Blount who played key to the Patriots winning the Super Bowl. In the past teams needed that one extra piece of the puzzle to win a Super Bowl for example:
Deon Sanders with the 49ers and Cowboys.
Todd Hayley going from the 49ers to the Cowboys was a big move.
Brees to New Orleans.
Packers signing Woodson.
Even a smaller signing like Jacoby Jones to Baltimore.
While drafting well is the most important part and is responsible for most of the Roster sometimes one or a few free agents can be the difference between a Conference champ and Super bowl champ.

This draft is horrible at the safety position and thin at CB.. Free Agency is better at both position. .
True. In fact there are a lot of decent safeties in free agency that could be an upgrade to what we have and there are quiet a bit of pretty good safeties that are coming off of major injuries if we wanted to take the risk.
I do believe there are still a few safeties that could be drafted in the 2nd-3rd round that could start. We would have to get one in early rounds since there isn't much depth at the position.
-
I would have to disagree with this. Our defense was around top 5 through the last month of play. It would be great to upgrade Saftey and CB, but WR 2 is much more important. (By far) If we had a decent complement to KB, we may could have beat Seattle. It doesn't matter how much time we give Cam, if no one can get open......we won't win. We need playmakers at WR more than we need air.
Well we could draft a WR in the 1st round, get a safety in the 2nd or 3rd round and a nickle back can be found in the 4-5 round. Add a solid tackle and RB and there's our roster for 2015.
-
I believe that Gettleman likes signing atleast a low level FA so he isn't stuck having to reach to feel a position so he can go BPA. Which is why we signed Oher.
-
Realistically I see our wide receiver corp look like this and yes I believe Cotchery will be cut.
1.KB
2.draftee( Jaelen Strong?)
3. Philly Brown (slot WR)
4.Boykin ( I believe he can be a solid 3-4 WR and looks like a Gettleman like signing.
5. Ginn ( I don't see him getting many snaps as a WR since Philly is better receiver and basically the same mold)
6/practice squad. Idk if we will have 6 WRs on the 53 man but I'm going on a limb and say it will be between Mike Brown, Brenton Bersin, Stephen Hill and Marcus Lucas with the potential of another drafted/UDFA WR.
Unless Mike Brown and/or Stephen Hill impresses in training camp they will probably be gone.
-
Washington is rumored to take Mariota at #5 if available. I believe that maybe Washington is putting out some misinformation to trick the Eagles to try to get a higher pick than 5 so they will waste more to move up. Chip wants Mariota and has proved he will do crazy transactions so it would be a great idea for Washington to trick a division rival.

I wish we could resign Hardy for vet minimum. I believe Oakland is his best choice money wise. The dolphins signed Suh so they don't have money. Colts signed Trent Cole so I don't see them trying to get Hardy as well. Jacksonville has already signed some big name free agents so they are probably out of the mix. Which leaves the Raiders. I have heard that the Patriots are interested so he could take less and sign with them instead. New England will get the most out of Hardy and we all know that they have a history of getting troubled players to turn things around.

The fact that Boykin had almost 700 yards in starting only 8 games in 2013 discredits that entire post.
Which is why I wouldn't be against us signing him and I don't see why people would be against us signing him. He got beat out by Adams who was a second round pick and a good wide receiver. So he isn't as good as Adams who could be a #2 WR on almost any team. Boykin had a solid year in 2013 and would be an instant upgrade over Cotchery and will probably be cheap. He may not be a #2 WR but he could be a solid 3-4 WR. At the end of the day would you want Cotchery or Cotchery and Boykin going into training camp?
Also what if we end up not drafting a WR in the first 4 rounds? We would still have Boykin who could be a stop gap #2 WR and while that isn't good it's better than having Cotchery again as our #2. If we do end up drafting a WR then he will offer competition and leadership and our WR corp would be pretty good. If someone goes down he could fill in.
-
that is a contradiction to what NFL Network said, but hey, blow it up
Yes indeed the NFL network said the Saints were looking to trade everyone except Brees.
-
Is it bad I think we should sign Nicks?
Not at all. For the right price he would be a solid player and upgrade over Cotchery. His problem is staying healthy.
FA hasn't even started yet and someone's bitching cause GMan hasn't brought in T Smith? Oh boy....
We won't get Torrey Smith. He will be the top WR in free agency and will get over paid.
-
The question is do we sign a free agent or draft a WR to be our #2 guy? The draft is supposed to be deep with WRs so I would feel fine with signing a Cecil Shorts or Micheal Crabtree and drafting a mid round WR to develop. I still feel Stephen Hill and recently signed Mike Brown could develop into something special.

We need specialized players so our starters don't get hurt on special teams. Our special teams cost us one game against the Vikings and hurt us plenty of others to a lesser extent. I just hope we have special team players who can contribute as a successful back up when called.
