  1. NOPE NOPE NOPE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! There are aboslutely NO EXCUSES for our #1 pick QB to not be throwing for a MINIMUM 300 YPG and NO LESS than 2 40+ yard passes PER GAME! Even though there are COUNTLESS examples of young QBs struggling in the NFL OUR QB has to perform at no less than a pro bowl level through the first 4 games of the season or else he is a bust and the HC should be fired!!!!!!!! NO EXCUSES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry just trying to fit in with all the other brain deads on this forum

Can we please stop comparing him with Trevor Lawrence. They are two fairly different quarterbacks. Find some other way to cope.

How is comparing Bryce's rookie year to Trevor's ROOKIE year where he had similar weapons and a bad scheme a bad thing to do? Because Bryce is shorter? That makes absolutely no sense

  3. 1 hour ago, CRA said:

Trevor didn’t have Thielen and our weak backfield was even better.  And Urban Meyer made Matt Rhule look competent.   Trevor was in a worse spot than Bryce.

Trevor was also a physically built robot in a lab for the NFL, Bryce isn’t.   There are going to be some things that will never be on the table for Bryce because of limitations that don’t apply to Trevor.

Trevor had James Robinson who ran for over 1,000 yards the year prior and averaged 4.6 YPC Trevors rookie year. He didn't have a 33 year old Theilen he had Marvin Jones Jr., Chark, and Shenault. There is no way you can sit there and argue Trevor had less to work with than Bryce does currently. Trevor didn't have an OG that gave up 28 pressures in 2 weeks either.

So the only reason Trevor was able to overcome the challenges of his rookie year is because he's 6' 5 220 pounds? How many 6'5+ QBs have busted out of the NFL over the years?

No two situations in the NFL will EVER be identical. This comparison is to show you people that just because a highly drafted QB struggles his rookie year does not mean he is automatically a bust. Sometimes it takes time to develop. It takes time for the TEAM to develop around him. This isn't the only comparison that I can make it was just the most logical because of how similar the situations are for these two QBs in their rookie years.

Jags had the worst HC in decades.  It was a literal reality TV comedy show.  So bad that Matt Rhule couldn't get a little talk.

And their skill talent around the rookie made the current Panthers look fast.

Trevor didn't make some massive jump from year 1 to year 2.  The massive jump/change was what was around Trevor.   Coaching and skill talent.

Trevor had Chark, Shenault and a bad Oline. Sound familiar?

And as Trevor's environment improved from year 1 to year 2, he improved. Why can't the same be said for Bryce?

  5. 5 minutes ago, Varking said:

Trevor is the #2 QB in the NFL through four games per PFF this season. Urban wasted his rookie year.

This year is what year 3 for Lawrence? What does that have to do with anything I said?

So Trevor was the victim of bad schemes his rookie year. Gotcha. The bad schemes made him miss wide open throws and the rookie mistakes you normally see from a QB. Gotcha. Trevor threw 1 TD pass the entire months of November and December that year too. But I'm sure that was all on the coaching staff and had absolutely nothing to do with being a rookie qb on a terrible team (similar to what Bryce Young is going through currently).

Believe what you want but when Bryce does get it together towards the end of the season and into year 2 it is going to be great to hear the excuses you and everyone else who is bashing our rookie qb come up with as to why he's all of a sudden being successful.

Did the Jags have good reason to think that Trevor was seriously physically limited in what he can do on an NFL football field?

There was most definitely questions surrounding whether he was going to translate into a good QB or not. He had a pretty rough rookie season going 3-14. https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/gamelog/_/id/4360310/type/nfl/year/2021

He had multiple games without a passing TD, a sub 60% completion % and 17 INTs to 12 TDs. The questions were definitely there. You don't have to have world class measurables to be a good QB in the NFL. Most guys just need time. In fact, I would say the majority of the NFL starters in today's NFL either had rough/incomplete rookie campaigns or sat for a year or more.

Sure it sucks being in another "wasted" year where we'd probably be picking in the top 10 again if we had a 1st round pick. The fans have a right to be upset after what was seemingly promised a "playoff" season in year one but thats not how its worked out this far. Do we give up now after all the work that has been put in? I don't think so. I think we continue building this team and see what happens and hopefully they end up turning the corner. I truly believe that they will.

Hey everyone, here is this week's A22 review. I broke it out into defense then offense then video reviews. I attempted to include everyone's request. If I missed your request feel free to ask me here and I can provide some insight and maybe chop up a quick video.

I also attempted to make this mobile friendly with links - let me know if you prefer this format.

    Defense Quick Hits

    • Run defense looked to be mainly playing the pass on Sunday and this led to a lot of rushing opportunities for Minnesota

    • We ran a cover 3 defense out of 2-4-5 and this impacted our ability to play the run

    • Chinn played spell for Grugier-Hill, and was at the line of scrimmage a lot of plays. Chinn had an excellent day and I think I am finally figuring out what Evero’s plan is with Chinn

    • Luvu out of position on a couple of runs early in the game and this gave up some big yardage on some rushes

    • Our run defense is lacking a big bruising linebacker. Vikings had open holes primarily because we didn’t have that second level body to fill it. I would like to see a big linebacker on this roster next year

    • YGM was the reason the deep ball fell short for Cousins on the DPI play… straight bull rush into Cousins. YGM had an awesome disruption on a Mattison redzone touch. Potential TD without YGM. He had a very very good game. If YGM continues at the pace he is at, he can shake that 2nd round bust tag easily.

    • Troy Hill is aggressive to the spot and doesn’t give up on plays – love his motor

    • Hats off to Franklin on his pick 6.. That was 100% execution of Evero’s scheme. Kirk doesn't throw that ball if Franklin doesn’t engage his man the way he did

    • DJ Johnson was responsible for a run stop in the first quarter. He pushed his man into the hole and led to a run for no gain. DJ is in our run stop package with YGM during this game.  DJ Johnson looks like he is a strong mother fugger. I expect him to active in games to come

    • I have counted a couple of plays where CJ was in JJ’s hip pocket. The routes were mainly out routes and stop routes.

    • When the Vikings ran a 2 TE set .. Chinn was on the sideline

    • Shy Tuttle is really struggling in our defense

    Offense Quick Hits

    • We are struggling to find a TE (outside of Hurst) on this roster to execute all ends of this offense. We tried Ricci early and his run blocking was bad.

    • As the game began to progress the Vikings put more and more players on Thielen. There was one play where they had two corners and two safeties on Thielen. TMJ got a 30 yard gain that was called back for holding by Bozeman.

    • The delay of the game that was called in the game appeared to be some communication issues between Bozeman. Bozeman was saying something to Bryce as Bryce was saying something to Hubbard, and then Bryce went up to Bozeman to check and then by the time the ball was snapped the clock hit 0.

    • The Vikings ran the same play twice on a single drive against us. It was a screenplay to the tight end. The first one was called back on a hold and then 3 plays later they called the exact same play and it went for a big gain.

    • Justin Jefferson’s ability to stop on a dime is just unreal. There are multiple plays where he just instantly stops and turns. He did not receive the ball on all of them, but if Cousins saw him… he would have been good for another 2-3 catches.

    • Our run blocking is just outright bad right now. There is no sugar coating this. Zavala struggles to get to the second level, and there just isn’t any chemistry along the line. The timing is just off. There is no other way of putting this… the offensive line is just not winning. No push at all across the line.

    • It is time to bench Zavala and let him grow by watching

    • Thorckmorton was on and off, better pass blocker than run blocker by far.

    • Laviska is a gadget player, and the  team needs to embrace this. He is our 4th reciever and saw run in the 2nd half but his routes were more decoy and short than anything else.

    Video Highlights

    • In the first quarter Bryce’s first pass went for over 15+ yards.. He finds Thielen on a medium post route. This is a great read and anticipation play by Bryce. It does appear to be a designed play to go to AT as a primary read and then TMJ as the second. This is a solid play design. [VIDEO]

    • The dropped TD pass by Ian was brutal. It’s the right read for Bryce, and you can’t put that ball in any better of a position. We truly need to get Stephen Sullivan back if we want to see some of these plays land successfully [VIDEO]

    • Absolutely insane throw by Bryce Young that he won't get credit for because Chark did not come up with it. However, this throw hits Chark right in the face mask. The elements of this throw are the reasons why everyone and anyone should be excited about Bryce. [VIDEO][VIDEO2]

      • Busy Pocket

      • Off Platform

      • Ultra Quick Release

      • DOT

    • For the Vikings first TD falls on D’shawn Jamison. His PFF grade was bad because both TDs were his fault. In this video you will notice that he is caught in no man’s land while Franklin is expecting him to fill the middle to take away the easy pitch and catch for cousins and jefferson. This sucks because it was a third down. [VIDEO]

    • I will all be the judge, but from this angle it does not appear that the ball was as much as a hospital ball as we thought for Thielen when he was injured. It appears that Bryce was expecting Thielen to settle in the zone. If you notice in this video Thielen begins to slow down and appears that he is settling, but I think his momentum carries him forward and the ball is behind him. That being said, if this isn't the case then it is a behind throw by Bryce. [VIDEO]

    • Sack on Cousins was really solid by YGM. He just kept his motor going and chased down Cousins. The other piece to note here is that this was a coverage sack and a solid job by CJ staying with Jefferson. [VIDEO]

    • Awesome coverage by both CJ and Chinn. They both shutdown their intended target on this play. Great work. [VIDEO]

    • This is a play that many love to see Bryce do. I think he does a great job here finding an opportunity to create extra time and hit Thielen…. However, I really would have liked to see Bryce step up here instead of breaking the pocket and wait for the deep route to DJ Chark develop. This is very nitpick, and this is a great overall play. I am just curious about the possibility of going to DJ. We did not call many deep plays, but this is one of them. I would also like to see the o-line block for just one deep shot. [VIDEO]

    • Here is the deep ball that Bryce threw to DJ that came up short. An interesting piece here that was not taken into consideration when we were watching the game is the fact that Bryce is hit here when throwing the deep ball which obviously took off some power behind his throw. Bryce is unable to finish his full throwing motion, this led to a wobbler that we all thought Bryce just weak armed it.. [VIDEO]

    • This is a great play design to set up a Laviska screen. We overload the left side of the line to get the Vikings defense to favor that side. We then bring Tremble in motion to set up a lead block to set up a solid gain. This is the kind of stuff that deserves some praise in our playbook. [VIDEO]

    • I am going to let you all be the judge here… but the flag on Ickey for ineligible receiver is debatable. I have slowed down the video for you to make a call. Typically the rule states that an ineligible receiver is someone that is 1-2 yards past the LOS that is not blocking another player. Ickey is not only blocking someone, he is also at the 2.5 yard mark at the time of release from BY. The thing that gets me here is how late the ref throws the flag, as if he didnt see it until it was too late. You tell me. [VIDEO

    • Starting to see a theme here with our deep shots…. Sacks. This is the fumble play by Bryce. Looks like this play was a deep shot to Chark on the right side, but it just never developed. We had both DJ Chark and Marsette going big on this play. We just can’t line these calls up with our protection. Very Frustrating. [VIDEO]

    • Another play where we call a deep shot but this time to Thielen. Our oline just can’t hold the pocket long enough for the QB to do anything with it. Zavala gets absolutely destroyed on this play. [VIDEO]

    • Another sack on Bryce. There is just nowhere to go with the ball… a throwaway would be nice, but I just can’t see how he does it with the time and the routes on the field that does not turn into an intentional grounding. Zavala again being bounced around at the LOS  [VIDEO]

    • This is the stuff that won’t get the appreciation it deserves and most coaches are excited when they see their rookie protect the football and not try to force it. This is one of those small things, like Bryce -  lol. Here you will notice that he looks at every option on the field before finding his dump down. Every single option is covered here, but Bryce does not try to force… even though he knows we are down 8 with less than 5 minutes to go in the game. [VIDEO]

    • No one open, and Bryce gets the first down with his feet while the pocket crumbles around him. [VIDEO]

    • Great pocket navigation by Bryce to move around and keep the playing going. Finds DJ Chark on a deep mid route who settles in the zone. I personally think the ball is where it needs to be and Chark should have settled sooner in the soft spot of the zone, but the other argument can be made that this ball is behind him. Your call. Solid gain. [VIDEO]

    • Another solid zone ball by Bryce and throwing to a spot where he does not get his receiver killed. Great read on the zone play and hits TMJ in the soft spot of the zone. [VIDEO]

    • I have no idea if Hubbard was told to support Zavala on this or if it was just a blown blitz pickup…  but it cost us a touchdown. This play concept was perfect for the moment as the intended target was Adam Thielen. The design is for Ian to run a short out route to keep the corner down and Thielen to run a deep slant and get open in the back of the endzone. However, due to the blocking assignments… Bryce is sacked in less than 1.8s and we are unable to take advantage. This really bums me out, because I truly think Hubbard was asked to help Zavala here. Chuba immediately goes to Zavala’s left hip, if Zaval was able to hold his own, I believe Chuba blocks Smith and this is a TD to Thielen. [VIDEO

Overall, I am coming away more frustrated with our offensive line more than anything else. It’s hard to blame our skill players because they are not getting opportunities in this offense due to the inability of our oline to show any resemblance of a functional product. I really think this is a Campen issue. Other teams in the NFL are experiencing similar issues but are not struggling as badly as we are. It truly doesn't make sense to me.

Okay, that was my rant. As for the rest of the team… you can see that our scheming and concepts are there and when executed we can be effective on the field. I would like for us to find ways to let Bryce be Bryce because some of his best plays in this game felt like there was someone else managing the situation. This could be an overprotective coach, or it could be the fact that this stuff truly doesn't trust our oline.

Bryce has some things to clean up, but there is a lot of impressive decision making here by a rookie who is constantly under pressure. I get fans are frustrated and want to see home run balls and cool looking passes, but that is just not the offense we are bringing in on sundays. The fact is that we have led in every game we have played this year and are making mental mistakes. We have to tighten it up if we want to have a season that is not a disaster.

Would pie you multiple times if I could. Thank you for the write up. Bryce just needs more time, our offense needs more time. Unfortunately there is going to be some ugly football with such a young team. I would like to see Zavala get some more mental reps and maybe some spot duty before continuing to start him. I think that's what will happen when Corbett finally makes it back from injury

I remember most questioning if Tua has the physical ability, the arm to be effective in the NFL during his rookie year.  He had some terrible performances early on but started showing promise later in the season.  He was also on a much better team offensively. Bryce just needs to show he can stretch the field in the NFL when needed, everything else will be good.  Tua faced the same criticisms and doubts.

Trevor Lawrence's rookie year is a much better comparison. He also had Chark and Shenault as his WRs that year too.

I mean, I think it's a good play. Don't get me wrong. But is it the type of play I get excited about? Definitely not. It's a play I expect an NFL QB to make. There's nothing about this play that makes me say, "Wow. Now I see why we felt like we had to go all in to get this guy!"

Were the Jaguars saying that about Trevor Lawrence his rookie year? I doubt it. They went 3-14 and he had 9 games where he didn't throw a TD and only 2 games where he threw more than one. Could it be possible that Bryce Young just needs some time? Is it possible that not every young QB comes into the NFL ready to set the world on fire? Yes Stroud has been killing it. Would he be doing the same here with this system and staff? I doubt it. Oh and btw Trevor Lawrence's WRs that year? DJ Chark and Laviska Shenault. Sound familiar? Gotta give the kid some time. This offense/scheme/running game/O line/WRs/TEs have done Bryce absolutely no favors so far this year.

  10. Remember when Trevor Lawrence was a bust after his rookie year? They went 3-14 and he had a lot of very pedestrian games just like Bryce is currently having. One exception was his first game where he had 300 yards 3 tds and 3 int. It was his only 300 yard game of the year so it was more of an outlier for him. It was also only 1 of 2 games in which he threw more than 1 TD pass. The 2nd game being the last game of the season

    https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/gamelog/_/id/4360310/type/nfl/year/2021

Obviously the main difference here is that his HC was fired after year 1 (could the same happen here? I doubt it). I really think they just need time. Let them (the team) take their lumps this year and hopefully next year we can have a similar year two that Jacksonville experienced with Trevor.

This place really is starting to suck more than the team. I may just have to follow some of the old heads. If you notice, there has been one that we all know who has gone silent and has essentially left due to the stupidity and sketchy moderation.

Yea I'll unfortunately be taking another hiatus (whocaresamiright) as shitty as today was I by no means am sticking up for Bryce it's pretty inexcusable to not score a single TD today with all the opportunities we had. Ans as much as I'd like to stick around and discuss it. This place will be an insane asylum this week. Not worth sticking around for it.

I can’t remember where I found it but in 2021 his passes completed that were thrown 20+yards in the air was only like 33% that’s horrible. You have to remember who he was throwing to in 2021. He had speed for days with Jameson Williams, JOJO Earle, Brian Robinson, and John Metchie. These were all guys that turned 5 yard slants and tunnel screens in to 70+ yard track meets and that’s just not going to happen in the NFL. Not sure where you would find the stat but I would bet anything that the 4,800 yards passing he had that year 60% or more was yards after catch from these guys. JS

To be fair...is that not what a "PG QB" should be doing? Get the ball to your playmakers and let them make plays. We just don't have anyone that's good at YAC. We had one of the best in DJ Moore but he's no longer here. Miamis offense is full of YAC players, they are out there and we need to put a few around Bryce.

But like I've been saying it's hard to get things right after just one off-season. It can obviously be done but more often than not it takes a season or two for the vision to take shape. Hopefully we are much improved by seasons end going into next year.

Agreed. In the second game especially he just looked really hesitant to throw and like you said, like he was second guessing everything.

I don't think think the staff is blind to this. As critical as I have been of situational offensive play calling, these guys do know NFL football. The more I think about it and look at the numbers and it just sinks in how much better the passing game ran with Dalton the more I do think that the ankle was just an excuse to pull Bryce out of the fire and give him a minute to reset and regroup.

If you think Dalton would have had the same success against the Saints D idk really what else there is to say. Two totally different defenses playing two totally different schemes.

This post is a bit of a vent session, but not how you might think.

Lemme tell you all a story about the last year or so of my life.

Last September my wife, my kids, and my two dogs moved into our new house. We were thrilled because we had been staying with my parents for a year while it was being built. Well it just so happens that a month later, our old dog Moose (yes, named after THAT Moose) had liver failure and we had to put him down. My wife was distraught. That little dog was her best friend and partner in crime. We got him back when we were a young couple in college and he was there through some of the best and worst times in her life over 14 years. We were just happy we got him into the house before his time was up.

Months pass and my wife is still taking it hard. She misses the companionship of her best friend. She said she'd never want a dog again after Moose died, but the idea was starting to grow on her. One of her coworkers showed her a picture of their dog, and it just so happens that the place she got it had puppies. Welp, the wife fell in love with one of those puppies and in January we brought home Captain (No, not named after THAT Captain). I was in no spot to say no to this happening. Who was I to tell her no if she wanted to open up her heart to a new dog? His personality is very similar to Moose's in many ways, and he is an absolute sweetheart that gets along with our other dog and literally everyone he meets.

The problem, however, is that my wife is a teacher and we got this dog in the middle of the school year. I work from home. Guess who got stuck taking care of the puppy? Yours truly. I didn't want a puppy. We already have a house trained dope ass frisbee chasing Border Collie that's my BFF. I didn't want to house train another dog, especially when I would be the one who would be the primary caretaker of said puppy.

Fast-forward to June. Dog still isn't housetrained. This is the worst most stubborn dog to potty train I have ever had. The border collie was a breeze and she was housetrained within a month or two. Not Captain. Captain is a dipshit. Also he eats his own poo, which is also disgusting, never had a dog that did that before, but I digress. It's now June so school is out, that means my wife will be home to help out with this idiot puppy that won't stop pissing and crapping all over our new house. I'll finally get some help. Well, at least I thought I would. The best laid plans of mice and men and all.

My wife goes to the doctor back in June and says that she's been fatigued since April and she noticed a lump on her breast. She thought nothing of it because it was painful and that usually just means it's a cyst. Last minute of the appointment the Doctor schedules her a mammogram, just to be safe. Wife goes to the mammogram. Something doesn't look right. She gets a biopsy done. A week later we get the news: Stage 2 triple negative breast cancer at 34 years old.

Treatment is aggressive, because this form of breast cancer is also aggressive. The tumor grew 2cms in the time between her first biopsy and her first MRI. Chemo starts damn near immediately and it takes her down hard. She is bedridden for a week straight. In that time frame I become Father, Mother, caretaker, nurse, housekeeper, and chauffeur overnight. Where we once split the duties of running the house, all responsibilities now fall on me. She is too sick to drive, so I now drive her to all of her appointments (we're up to 34 appointments in total since June btw). I'm just trying to keep us afloat as she fights for her life.

Through all of this big deal real world poo that is happening, this fuging dog will not stop pissing and shitting all over the house. I am growing frustrated. I want to get rid of the dog. I cannot get rid of the dog. The children are now attached. If I'm being honest I kind of am too, he really is a sweet boy, plus this dog adores me because I have been the one that has been keeping him alive and spending time with him ever since we got him. If he would just stop shitting inside the house, he'd be a really good dog.

June turns to July, July to August, August to September. Wife goes through multiple rounds of chemo, each one taking her down just as hard as the last. I spend as much time with the kids during the summer as I can while still working my regular 9-5 and taking care of wifey. Any spare time is dedicated to making sure this damn dog doesn't crap inside the house.

We are now in September. The first chemo regimen has ended, new weekly regimen starts. The hope is that this new regimen won't be as hard on her, that she'll be able to feel like herself more, even if just a little icky from the chemo. The first round of this new chemo cocktail was last Thursday. We are cautiously optimistic. Friday rolls around and she feels fine. We have optimism. Saturday rolls around and she is tired, but still able to spend time with the family. We have hope. Sunday, today, rolls around and my wife can't get out of bed. She is exhausted and feels like she is going to vomit all day. I am disappointed but not surprised. I take care of the kids like I have been the past few months, but I'm bummed. I miss my wife. I miss my best friend. I really wanted this to work out. This poo is hard guys.

One of the few escapes I've had throughout this whole ordeal in my personal life has been to follow this team. So I watch the game as best as I can while trying to keep the children alive. I feed and bathe them before bed. I had cautious optimism for this team when we hired Reich. I had optimism when we traded up to the #1 pick. I had hope when we took Bryce. I see we lose again. I am disappointed but not surprised. I get the kids to brush their teeth and see if my wife will be able to help me put the kids to bed. She is too sick and stays in bed. I do not blame her in the slightest. I just want her to feel better. I put my daughter down, read a story with her and kiss her good night. I go into my son's room, put him to bed, read him a story, and then rub his head until he falls asleep. I fall asleep next to him.

I am awoken at 8:30 by the sound of whining. It's Captain. He just went out about an hour ago when I sent the kids to brush their teeth. He's been doing better lately about letting me know he needs to go outside. The whining is a good sign.

I get up and head downstairs, and then the smell hits.

I'm too late. Sitting at the bottom of the stairs is a gigantic pile of crap that the dog has both stepped in and tried to eat. I look at the dog wagging his tail at me with a literal poo eating grin. I'm disappointed but I'm not surprised.

There's a metaphor here. I don't know exactly what it is, but it's here.

This team is a distraction for me at this point in my life. I can't get upset about them being bad though. I've been saying for a while now I don't get upset about this team like I used to because I have way more important stuff going on. The above story is that more important stuff going on. It's one of those things in life that really puts everything else into perspective.

Anyway, I hope they turn it around. They'd be a really good team if they learned to stop shitting inside the house. Until they do, I'll just be disappointed.

    But I won't be surprised.

I'm sorry to hear you're dealing with all that man.
