At what cost? With the defensive scheme change, as with the last time we did this with Ron and then he was fired right after we drafted a bunch of developmental 3-4 guys then switched back to a 4-3, we are more than a year away. We don't have a lot of draft capital, we don't have a lot of cap space...

It's just not going to happen in Year 1 of the Weimar Republic without an elite QB and there are none available. Ejiro has said he will run an even front if that's what the personnel dictates but he's grown up in an odd front, so how does that effect his ability to call a defense?

I'm of the opinion that this is a Year 3 project. I get Tepper wants to win now but we really don't seem to have the base of talent to get to a Super Bowl. If Tepper is looking a dollars, and just wants a playoff team (which he may) then sure, maybe we can get there. But is that what you want to fight for? A playoff spot?

You are asking me? All I have to go on is what they say and what they do.

Frank said from the start that they plan to win this season. They are not rebuilding.  So how are they going to do that?  They will have to find a starting qb from day 1. Is there one in this draft? I cannot see one. So the only thing left is to find a starter to line up under center while the get a rookie ready, if they manage to draft one in the 1st that is.  I'm curious to know how they pull that off.

Ah yeah Mcdaniels is pretty weird, lots of personality conflicts there.

Yeah, that guy. He basically said they simply decide to go in a different direction.

Gannon is the Cardinals coach right? He's very weird, but so was Siranni in his first interview. Definitely would be a little nervous being a Cardinals fan right now.

I did catch their coaches interview as well. You will have to forgive me for getting the names mixed up as I do not follow other teams front offices and coaches.  But to your point the Cardinals have a weird guy at the helm as well. Probably the weirdest I've heard so far.

Sorry,  got the name wrong.  But it was the Raiders coach.

Yeah I feel like that's just where we are at right now, ideally he continues to be a helpful tool and not an issue, but at the moment I just assume he's part of the group anytime they mention us meeting with anyone.

Anytime they are dealing with the possible face of the franchise I would expect him to be in on the interviews.

Kinda doubt it. Quarterbacks maybe, but all players? Probably not.

And no, I wouldn't downplay this.

That's what I meant, the qb's.  Should have been specific.

  7. Did anyone catch the interview with the Raiders coach yesterday? I came away with the impression that the parting of ways could have been a blessing for Carr. Gannon is a strange dude who appears to be in over his head.

I feel like Tepper is going to be involved with every QB interview and discussion this offseason. If he was already in Indy why would he not be part of the meeting after how involved he's been in everything the entire offseason. I feel like his presence is less of a tell than a number of other owners would be.

I suspect Tepper will be in on all the player interviews today.

  9. I just saw an interview with the Chargers GM Tom Telesco. Did not know he worked for the Panthers in their inaugural season.  He was telling the story about him being at his first combine as a 25 year old working for the Panthers.  He was tracking down players for Richard Williamson to interview.  Said he had to track down Keyshawn Johnson for him. Pretty cool interview.

I just hope there were no meatballs involved or any gut feeling driven shift to full on recruiting mode.

My guess is that it's a plan B element that they are covering in case they need to move fast to get a deal done. I know that when Carr was released it changed a lot of teams plans at qb.  I think it's a smart move to know if he is really a fall back option.

Won't work well enough. The game has changed. It favors the offense. You try to build a defense like that and roll with a mediocre QB and you're going to get rolled more often than not.

That Ravens team and season was an anomaly. We rarely see a defense dominate with mediocre QB play because it just doesn't work except in rare circumstances.

    Defense doesn't win championships anymore.

I think the Eagles would beg to differ with you. Had their defense shown up they win. A complimentary offense and defense wins championships. You have to score a lot of points sure but you better be able to prevent the other team from doing the same thing.  Your offense cannot consistently keep putting the defense in bad situations either.

Despite Geno Smith‘s resurgent campaign in his first season with the Seahawks, head coach Pete Carroll admitted Seattle is mulling all options when it comes to the 2023 draft, including potentially drafting a quarterback.

During a media address on Tuesday, Carroll described the Seahawks as being "totally connected" to the top quarterbacks in the draft, via Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times

“We’re totally connected to the quarterbacks that are coming out. This is a really huge opportunity for us. It’s a rare opportunity—we’ve been drafting in the low 20s for such a long time you just don’t get the chance with some of these guys. So we’re deeply involved with all that,” said Carroll.

I'd say Seattle might be a wildcard in this draft also. Geno is a one-year wonder at this point and they could be looking to their potential future franchise QB as well.

I watched his press conference live and I came away with that impression.

The conversation always seem to be either draft a rookie or bring in a vet. Fitteter said he was swinging for the fence which means he will do both. He will draft a qb likely in day 1 and will bring in a vet. Reich wants a winning season right away.  So does Tepper and so do I. We have to do better than 7-10  next year and should. So we won't put all our eggs in 1 basket but take a few swings to ensure success.

I've been thinking this is the plan all along.  I just cannot see them gambling everything on a rookie from day one.
