If you want to trade him, representing any other intention than you plan to keep him is unwise
You cannot keep this secret. You cannot tell me agents and teammates do not talk about this to friends on other teams. Anyone in any FO have already heard what's up through the grapevine. Any team interested already knows what they are willing to pay him and what they are willing to give up to do so. The Panthers have no bargaining power unless they get more than one suitor. You know that no team is giving up that much capital for Brian Burns. No amount of hype can overcome his tape. That's the bottom line.

So that means we are looking at addressing those (at least TE and OC) via FA rather than the draft?
I know (hope/assume) we're probably looking at WR in both, but if we are looking for IOL in FA i'd have to assume that also means OC. TE would probably be a short list in both the draft and FA.
issue with Boze is still kind of interesting. he did all the work to try to make himself appealing to the FO. Not sure if he put all that work into making himself a better fit for the offense.
If there's not a connection or a faulty connection with him and the QB, probably better to replace the center. Boze is a likeable fellow, but he just might not be the anchor we are looking for or need.
I would not take any FA signing as long term fix. Every position will eventually be upgraded through the draft. Don't underestimate how lacking in talent this team really is. Unless they get extremely lucky in the draft and through cheap FA's it will be years before this team will be competitive again.

Its the non exclusive tag. I dont know why people are jumping to say that means hes probably staying. I get that tag and trades arent especially common but the media doesnt seem to really know anything which is a positive sign i think. Three days ago they were talking about how they were working out a long term deal and the literal next day they were saying there werent going to be any more long term talk. Regardless of what the media say it seems fairly clear that the #1 goal is to try to trade him for a good return, that seems the priority over long term deal now I would guess.
We will see. I'm not confident that they really want to trade him.

You want him to walk for nothing? That is on Fitterer for turning down those trade offers. Morgan is in a no win situation here.
That was inevitable the second Fitterer turned down that trade. This team is not getting anything close to 1 first much less 2 and the other team paying him a massive contract. It's not going to happen. They will either overpay him or cut him. That the only 2 options left.

I hope that you're wrong, but keep a spot behind the podium for me to join you when I come to reality.
I hope I am too. But everything I'm hearing coming out in the press seems to indicate that the team seriously wants to keep him.

So you've given up on the idea that it's just GM-speak?
It's not GM speak. They truly think he's something special. This team is FUBAR.

"The Carolina Panthers on Monday placed the franchise tag on edge rusher Brian Burns that guarantees their sack leader $24 million this season, a source told ESPN"
"The goal remains to sign Burns to a long-term deal. Carolina also wants to re-sign free agent linebacker Frankie Luvu and sign defensive tackle Derrick Brown to a long-term deal."
This tells me that nothing has changed with this team. I do not want to hear Dan Morgan mention the word Dawg again. He's full of poo.

Tagging him will be another massive mistake. They will not be able to trade him and receive 2 1sts in return. You guys are dreaming if you think a team is going to give up that much for his worthless ass. We will be stuck with another massively overpaid slacker on this team. He will be the Ian Thomas of the defense.

I'm not buying what any of they are saying until I actually see it happen. Talk is cheap. Results are the only thing that matters.

Still trying to sell Burns as if he's something special. I hope the sucker that falls for that malarkey isn't the Panthers.

Crushed? Now the excuse is its because Tepper replaced to grass as the reason they suck? Or is it that they just suck and this is just another reason to complain?

I sure as hell hope he's right. Because the alternative is where we are, and has a best odds of unfolding. Unless Morgan has some magic up his sleeve I'm struggling to find a way that he can build a better offensive group with the little draft capital he has left. If you go by his comments in his presser it appears our remaining cap will go to shore up the defensive side of the team. Canales better be the next Shaun McVay if this team hopes to not finish last in the nfcs again this season.

Certainly wasn’t you a year ago, was it? Can’t believe I was banned for a week for saying the poo that is now, contextually, very mild.
A year ago my stance was that the team had to pick the right qb no matter which one it turned out to be. It will always be my stance.

The Panthers cant just snap their fingers and sign him to an appealing contract. They've been attempting that for at least year. If they could they would have. That's up to Burns.
They can pay his asking price and all would be forgiven. Which is exactly what I do not want them to do. The 27 million they offered him is ridiculous. I hope that was all Fitterer and now that Morgan is in charge he has rescinded that offer.

if he was on his rookie deal still, then maybe. But I seriously doubt a team is going to give up 2 firsts knowing he is going to cost 30 million. If Burns has come off that number then we might as well try and sign him if its reasonable
The Panthers really only have 2 choices now. Sign him to a long term contract that would be appealing to another team to take off their hands for draft compensation. That's is they are smart enough to pull that off. But my fear is they want to keep him. Which is another issue within itself.
Or they let him walk. Which is what other teams are waiting for and most likely Burns himself. This would be my preferred option as well.

I want to know who the Panthers are talking to.

Brown doesn't? You can take the emotional approach and I would agree, but in the era of salary cap moves, which is the point of the thread, you may not be able to keep what you want. I do think, however, if we cut the entire bottom half of our roster, most would not be signed to other teams.
I think he meant Brown, not Burns. It would be just like the Panthers to trade Brown and pay Burns double what he's worth.

How about you sit this one out.

Luvu / Burns…. Gross / Peppers Dejavu

I'm not sure what the plan is going forward for anyone at the moment. I'm not even sure there is a plan if I'm being totally honest. I guess we shall see.
