I think the 49ers with Lance, the Rams with Goff, the Eagles with Wentz all show that trading a bunch of picks to move up for a QB who winds up busting isn't the death blow people think it is. All 3 of those teams have had considerable success with other QBs despite giving up all those picks and never really had down seasons. So if we overpay for Stroud/Young and he doesn't work out BUT Reich turns out to be an elite overall head coach and/or we find another option at QB it wouldn't be an issue. I'm ok taking the chance, at least it gives us something to be truly excited about for the first time since probably drafting Cam.
-
If Stroud/Young/Levis is sitting on the bench just biding time to start I'd be completely fine with it. But yeah if it's Sam and Corral or something fug that
-
yeah can't believe I'm saying this but I actually prefer just keeping Sam over getting Wentz if we're gonna have a bridge QB that isn't a Carr/Rodgers/etc. Strong preference to nab a QB and make him day 1 starter though.

dang haven't seen you around here much in a while. lost a lot of good men since Tepper bought the team and we've sucked ever since. where's @SCP

Do you trust Reich to find us (and develop) a franchise QB?

Not a chance in hell. Purdy has a tiny sample size in an elite offense, he may not even be that good. Nick Foles and others have had similar stretches of even better play than him. Lance hasn't shown enough in the NFL yet to be worth even a 2nd. I'd trade a 3rd for him but not any more, certainly not 9th overall -

HC is always the most important guy in the decision making in who to add at QB. QB is the position the HC works closest with and often the defacto leader of the team. They 100% need to be in sync and on the same page or the situation is set up for failure. Very possible Irsay set Reich up for failure with QB choices but I don't think that's what happened. I think Reich was very much in on acquiring those guys. Especially considering his history with Rivers and Wentz. -

Which is why I was such a big fan of Steichen -- he has experience developing Herbert and Hurts. Herbert was picked high but was by no means a unanimous top QB choice and we could get a similar caliber prospect around 9 or maybe with a smaller trade up. Hurts was a 2nd rounder and many were not high on him at all pre-draft. -

We're talking about Tepper here... You really don't think he could be sold on Reich with Carr or Rodgers? -
Reich's Indy career was ultimately defined by his trend of bringing in retread QBs -- he had Luck 1 year then after he retired during the preseason was stuck with Jacoby Brissett. After that he went out and brought in Rivers, then Wentz then Ryan in back to back to back years. Rivers was ok but overall bringing in these retreads was largely a failure. The Colts under him never invested much in the QB position outside of retreads with Jacob Eason (current Panther...) being the highest QB selected by them in the 4th round in 2020. Prior to his time as Indy's HC he was the OC for the Eagles when they drafted Wentz high and did help develop him into being on his way to a potential MVP season before Wentz went down with a season ending injury. Foles of course led them to a SB win and performed admirably in that stretch while Wentz' career fizzled out. Fair to question though how much of a hand Pederson had in Wentz' development and Foles' successful stretch. Outside of that he was QBs coach or OC for the Chargers and Colts who both had established veteran QBs in Rivers and Peyton Manning. So, based on this track record how do you feel about him being the head coach of a team needing to find a franchise QB? Do you think he will continue to go the retread route with options like Carr, Rodgers potentially available? Will he lead the way in handpicking a QB high in the draft? If we go rookie (or Corral) how do you feel about his ability to develop under Reich?

lol I edited before y'all even replied. I was moving too fast and only read the loss column forgetting that 8-8 wasn't a possible record any more. Either way he's extremely mediocre just like we have been.

nvm I can't read

Lukewarm. Not excited but don't absolutely hate it. Whatever man. Hopefully we can get Fangio for DC

I agree Scot but it's worth pointing out that there are head coaches out there who are great coaches and successful but still have the struggle of keeping staff members too long (or making the wrong staff decisions). For example the Ravens the year they won the Super Bowl I believe the owner or GM essentially forced Harbaugh's hand to make an OC change mid-season. Also look at Belichick with Patricia/Judge last year and now Kraft stepping in to get him to make a change. Even Rivera, for all his faults, is a solid overall head coach (having Rhule for 3 years makes Ron look like a god damned genius) but was horrible with picking his staff.

So I may not be wrong...

who is "they?" us?
-
Tepper is gonna pull some stupid poo like naming Reich and Wilks co-HCs and in game management will be a disaster
-
Somehow I let my blind fandom get me excited about hiring a new HC this cycle but the longer this goes on the more I realize that Tepper is the one making the hire and he's made wrong decision after wrong decision since he bought the team. As it sits right now I have no hope that he'll make the right decision, no matter who it is that we hire. This team will likely be a dumpster fire indefinitely, until someone can dig up some dirt on Tep and force him out like JR, Snyder, etc.

Brady to the Raiders. I don't know which Jones you are referring to, Daniel? Stays in NY. Rodgers either retires or traded to Jets. Lamar stays in Baltimore. Tannehill stays in TEN for now. Lance stays in SF. Jimmy G to Bucs
-
Agree he’s rock solid. Just realized he’s calling this year’s SB. So happy for him. Really too bad we couldn’t have gotten him a ring (and guys like Cam, Luke, TD).
-
I mean, is it less fair than just not hiring him as full time HC at all? Give him a 2 or 3 year contract and if he sucks next year we move on and he still gets paid for a few years. For a guy whose track record isn't great either at HC or DC for that matter, any opportunity to be a HC should be welcomed and not be viewed as "unfair." It's a results oriented business. Sure generally it takes longer to build things but nearly 2 years here (including his 12 games this year) + his 1 disastrous year in Arizona would be enough for me to see he's not a great option at HC longer term. For most of us here we've already seen enough. Giving him 1 more year would be more than fair.
-
If this happens and we're out on Payton then I say give Wilks 1 year with an extremely short leash. If we don't make the playoffs with at least 10 wins and maybe even with that if we don't win a playoff game, see what options are out there next offseason. Not a fan of the other OCs or Reich. Tepper really should've just taken a shot on Harbaugh. Proven guy like SP but arguably better, without having to give up any draft picks to the Aints. Oh well, it ain't happening.
-
Steichen is our man
-
2 great years with the Eagles not only putting points up but developing Hurts, and before that he developed Herbert (who's game has faltered a bit since Steichen left). Steichen is a great candidate, probably the best of all the young OCs in the mix.
-
I don't think anyone really knows what's going on with Payton. Tepper and Payton could have in theory both agreed to wanting to make it work and now it's a matter of hammering out trade details. Completely conceivable that it wouldn't get leaked.
