2023 Off-Season Thread
MillionDollarCam replied to USDepartmentOfSavagery's topic in Carolina Hurricanes
They are going to have to retain something if they want to move him though, no one can take that cap hit for the next four years. It would cripple a franchise. -

They can keep him then because no team is adding $11.5M to their books for the next four years. I’ll take a second line absolute beast of a shutdown pairing in Orlov and Pesce and flip Skjei for a forward. -

They are going to have to, there’s not a team in the universe that can fit $11.5M in their cap for the next four years. They’ll end up retaining 35% and depending on who he goes to, a third time might have to come in and retain an additional third. I’d imagine San Jose doesn’t want to take a bunch of salary back so I don’t know how Pittsburgh is in the conversation since they have no cap space whatsoever. If Carolina were to acquire Karlsson then I think it would like like this: San Jose Receives - Picks, Prospects Third Team Receives - Pesce Carolina Receives - Karlsson, Picks from Third Team San Jose Would retain 35%, the third team would retain 35%, and Carolina would get Karlsson at $4.025M AAV over the next four years. $4.025 AAV is the contract that Pesce is currently on. San Jose probably doesn’t want salary back because they are in a rebuild so we give them picks and prospects and we give Pesce to a team that’s interested in him in exchange for taking on some of Karlsson’s salary. The deal could also be simplified if San Jose retained 50% on Karlsson. It would have to be something like Pesce and Drury for Karlsson and then San Jose could flip Pesce at the deadline for picks. -
Canes Sign Michael Bunting
MillionDollarCam replied to MillionDollarCam's topic in Carolina Hurricanes
I actually think this is Nino’s replacement. We tried to sign Marchment last year and it didn’t work out, Bunting is a very similar player. The Canes brought in Patches to be their 30 goal scorer last year and it didn’t work out. I personally think there is another move for a top six forward. -
Hornets Signing LaMelo Ball to Max Extension
MillionDollarCam replied to MillionDollarCam's topic in Charlotte Hornets
Haliburton got the same deal and Melo is better than him. Haliburton set the market as soon as he got the max. Now every player better than him on their entry deal is all going to get the max. -

Just my thought process. If we don’t get Karlsson then you ride out Pesce’s contract this year. Regardless, Skjei gets moved cause you don’t pay Orlov to play on the third pairing. So defensively I think we’re looking at: Slavin - Burns Orlov - Karlsson/Pesce Chatfield - TDA The 7th defenseman doesn’t really matter but maybe go pick up Marc Staal for cheap since he’s a lefty. In moving Skjei, I think you attach picks and prospects to him to get a 30 goal scorer. So my hypothetical team would be: Svechnikov - Aho - Jarvis Trade - Kotkaniemi - Necas Bunting - Staal - Fast Noesen - Martinook - Teravainen Drury Slavin - Burns Orlov - Karlsson/Pesce Chatfield - TDA Staal Andersen Raanta Kochetkov -

It would be a complicated deal. 50% retained by San Jose and 25% retained by a third team. And from what I’ve seen it’s down to Pittsburgh or Carolina with Pittsburgh being the favorite. -

Canes have seen a few guys head out. Zach Sawchenko headed to Vancouver MacKenzie MacEachern headed to St. Louis Max Pacioretty headed to Washington. -
Hopefully not Pesce since Orlov is a LHD. Skjei should be on the move but Pesce could be headed out as well if we get Karlsson.

So just Tarasenko and Bertuzzi really left in free agency. -

Killorn headed to the Ducks. Big name off the board. -
Canes Sign Michael Bunting
MillionDollarCam replied to MillionDollarCam's topic in Carolina Hurricanes
Orlov, Bunting, and TDA all provide the grit that we needed last year. -
Per Michael Scotto of USA Today, the Hornets are considering an offer sheet for Grant Williams of the Celtics. According to Scotto, the Hornets are still negotiating with P.J. Washington as well. I’d imagine that Williams is a contingency plan in the event that things go south with one of P.J. or Miles.

Per Shams. 5YR/$260M deal. The kid is staying in Charlotte.

Canes Sign Michael Bunting
MillionDollarCam replied to MillionDollarCam's topic in Carolina Hurricanes
Agreed, if we get Karlsson then I think one of them is included in the deal for cap purposes and maybe we get Karlsson and some picks. The other gets traded for a top six forward or for picks and we use that open cap space to go get someone like Killorn in FA. -

So Canes are sitting at $2.8M in cap space but if we acquire TDA then we basically have no cap space left. It sounds like the Canes are still interested in Karlsson and if my numbers add up, one of Pesce or Skjei (probably Pesce because Skjei has a NTC) could be included in the deal to get it done cap wise. San Jose would have to retain 50%, another team would need to come in and take an additional 25%, and the Canes would get Karlsson with around a $3M cap hit. Canes would probably then turn around and ship whoever is left over from Pesce and Skjei for a forward. Line-Up would be: Svechnikov - Aho - Jarvis ??? - Kotkaniemi - Necas Bunting - Staal - Fast Noesen - Martinook - Teravainen Drury Slavin - Burns Orlov - Karlsson Chatfield - TDA Coghlan Andersen Raanta Kochetkov At that point the only thing needed would be a LH 7th defenseman who we could pick up on a PTO. -

Sounds like a Karlsson deal is close, either Pittsburgh or Carolina. -

Duchene to Dallas, 1YR/$3M, nice deal for them. Not a whole lot left that I like on the FA market. Just Bertuzzi, Killorn, and Tarasenko. -

Canes current roster: Svechnikov - Aho - Jarvis Teravainen - Kotkaniemi - Necas Bunting - Staal - Fast Martinook - Drury - Noesen Ponomarev Slavin - Burns Skjei - Pesce Orlov - Chatfield Coghlan Andersen Raanta Kochetkov We still need a high end forward and I think that will be acquired via trade. Skjei and Pesce are probably both on the block and from the sound of it, the Canes are still interested in Karlsson and still plan to acquire TDA. -
Canes Sign Michael Bunting

Yes without TDA, with TDA probably $1M. The forwards are coming next when we start shipping defenseman out. -

Per Kevin Weekes it’s a 3YR/$4.5M AAV deal. He’s gritty and borderline dirty but he should do well next to Staal.
-
Canes will get something for them which they’d rather do than lose them for nothing in FA.

More grit on the way, Carolina is closing in on Michael Bunting / 3 year deal.
