  1. Honestly not sure what the plan is but I’m under the belief that TDA is coming to be a third pairing guy and help the PP. I might be in the minority but I don’t think this has anything to do with Pesce. I think you specifically go get TDA so you can bring back Pesce. I don’t think you’ll find many, if any, guys out there that can do what TDA did for us a couple years ago at a $2.5M cap hit. Last year, Staal’s and Ghost’s combined cap hit was around $10.5M, Carolina would now have Staal and TDA at a combined cap hit of around $5.5M. That just opened up $5M in cap space to give to Pesce. If I’m wrong and TDA is playing top four minutes then I’ll be right there with the rest of you guys, pitchfork in hand, marching on PNC Arena. But I truly believe TDA is solely being brought in for the PP and third pairing.
  2. LeBrun said it hit a snag but I saw a Philly insider recently say it’s been ironed out. The original proposal was: Carolina Receives: Tony DeAngelo (50% retained) Philadelphia Receives: An unsigned prospect from Carolina. Many speculated it’s either Bokk or Wall with the most likely being Wall.
  3. Something else to consider, when TDA was QB’ing the PP two years ago our PP was ranked 13th, last year it was 20th. He’s not coming here to play top defensive minutes, Rod will give him sheltered minutes on the third pairing and he’ll QB the PP. And for those that don’t think he can be sheltered, he was +30 in his time as a Hurricane, Rod knows how to handle TDA.
  4. For what it’s worth, the trade has hit a snag per LeBrun. I’d argue this furthers the point that this move has nothing to do with Pesce or any other defenseman. If TDA was Pesce’s replacement then the Canes would push the trade through no matter what.
  5. Don’t think it means that at all (for this year). TDA is in the same boat as Skjei and Pesce, they all only have one year left on their contract. Acquiring TDA does absolutely nothing to fix the problem of not having any second pairing defenseman under contract for 2024. I definitely think Pesce gets extended, Skjei probably just walks, and TDA might get extended after the year is over if he plays well.
  6. Chatfield played his off side a good amount last year when there were injuries and looked damn good doing it, wouldn’t have any concerns with him playing the left side. I also imagine the 7D will be a lefty that can rotate in.
  7. Phew, the US has no depth. What a terrible result. I can’t point out one player that I thought had an above average game.
  8. So it sounds like the trade will be: To Carolina: Tony DeAngelo (50% retained) To Philadelphia: Kevin Wall Keep in mind Philly gave Carolina a 2nd, 3rd, and a 4th for TDA.
  9. I think those last two years are going to suck but Jordo should be good for the first two.
  10. I’d be shocked if they inked Aho this offseason. A lot of money is coming off the books next year, it doesn’t make sense to extend him yet.
  11. We have a poo ton of available money. With Staal’s and Tony D’s contracts factored in, we have right around $21M in space. Throw Pesce in there at $5M and we are down to $16M. Svechnikov - Aho - ??? Teravainen - Kotkaniemi - Necas Martinook - Staal - ??? Noesen - Drury - Jarvis Rees Slavin - Burns Skjei - Pesce Chatfield - DeAngelo ??? ??? I’d factor in $2M for the backup goalie $4M for the starter $3M for the 3LW $7M for the 1RW
  12. Another reason I’ll guarantee this has nothing to do with Pesce is because Tony D only has one year left on his contract. The Canes aren’t foolish enough to move Pesce and replace him with a guy who’s in the same situation he’s in. Tony D is a quick fix for our PP, take it to the bank. The defense will be: Slavin - Burns Skjei - Pesce Chatfield - DeAngelo Ghosts cap hit to play on the bottom pairing was $4.5M, TDA’s will be half that at $2.5M.
  13. Unlikely, the retention makes it very likely that Pesce will be back. If the Canes took TDA’s full cap hit then I’d be concerned but the Canes are just going back to what they know works on the PP and that’s Tony D. It’ll be: Slavin - Burns Skjei - Pesce Chatfield - DeAngelo
  14. Looking like Carolina will send a prospect to Philly for Tony D at 50% retention, that’s a great trade.
  15. Not sure this has anything to do with Pesce especially since Philly is retaining 50%. Remember, Tony D is a righty and the only player that really played their off side at any point last year was Chatfield. There’s no way our organization sees him as a top four defenseman. I think we could see a defensive unit of: Slavin - Burns Skjei - Pesce Chatfield - DeAngelo DeAngelo was great on our PP and the organization probably wants him back to jump start it again.
  16. That was anticlimactic. Time to flip over to the US game.
  17. As if there was ever any question. Per LeBrun, it will a 4YR/$2.9M AAV deal with some no trade language in it.
  18. Lol, his shot is the least of my concern for his career. Everyone struggles from time to time, all you have to do is pop his game on verses Scoot, he didn’t have problems shooting in that game. The concern with Wemby will always be if he can stay healthy with that small of frame.
  19. I’m guessing just his rights. It basically guarantees the team acquiring him a few extra days to ink a deal before he hits free agency. It happens from time to time.
  20. The 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup kicks off tonight with the U.S. taking on Jamaica at 10:00PM on FS1. Most of the team is made up of B level players but there’s a few interesting names that are participating. Additionally, B.J. Callaghan will still be managing the team which is another thing to look forward to. I’ll probably flip over to the U.S. game after Charlotte’s game and speaking of Charlotte, Bank of America Stadium will be hosting the U.S.’s final group stage game against Trinidad next Sunday at 7:00PM.
  21. Recent article up by LeBrun said the Canes and Pesce are still working on an extension and it’s looking like it’ll get done.
  22. I can’t see the NHL getting involved. If they start allowing clubs to just take in all their KHL players that are under contract in Russia it would be a wild situation. Most of the hockey players in the KHL are draft eligible so if they just abandon their KHL team and up and leave then the NHL would essentially be harboring defectors. Nikishin also may not want to come over during all of this. I imagine it’s hard to leave your family in a situation like this. It’s a tough situation all around but Nikishin’s best option is to probably lie low and take care of his family. If he tries to leave right now he could see himself getting drafted (it’s already happened with other players - see Ivan Fedotov of the Flyers). Nikishin’s KHL contract is up in two years and hopefully by then the climate is better. It’s unfortunate that he extended his contract to begin with.
  23. Staal rumor was put out by Dredger so it’s 50-50 whether he’s overselling. As for Nikishin, he can only come over if his KHL contract is terminated by his KHL team or if he buys out the remainder of the contract himself. The NHL and KHL also have an agreement in place where the NHL club cannot give the KHL player money to buy out his contract. Nikishin would have to buy out the contract himself. If it ever did get that far we’d then have to worry about Nikishin getting drafted into the Russian armed forces while trying to leave.
  24. So just for consolidation purposes. - Burns is on the second to last year of a 8YR/$64M contract. - The AAV is $8M and the cap hit for each year is $8M. - The real money Burns is owed this year due to the structure of the contract is $5M. $3.35M will be coming from the Canes and $1.65M is coming from the Sharks - When negotiating with other free agents real money is not used as a negotiating factor because each contract is structured differently. AAV is used because it accounts for the average of the whole contract. - Even though Burns’ real money is low, his AAV is $8M. Pesce will be somewhere in the AAV of $5M to $6.25M if he’s resigned.
