Canes Close To Acquiring Brent Burns
Anybodyhome replied to MillionDollarCam's topic in Carolina Hurricanes
Burns is now the highest paid D-man on the roster. Jaccob Slavin might not be very happy right about now. -

Vincent Trocheck, the Canes paid him $4.75M the last few years, signed by the Rangers at $5.625M. Are you seriously telling me the Canes wouldn't ante up a new deal at less than $1M per year more? -
Canes Close To Acquiring Brent Burns

"San Jose is reportedly retaining one-third of Burns' $8-million cap hit in the swap." "Additionally, the Sharks will retain 33 percent of Burns’ $8 million AAV contract, dropping his cap hit from $8 million to $5.33 million." Technicality- the Canes are still paying more for a 37-year old D-man then the 26-year old D-man they just traded. And I know they had to replace TDA, but is this the best the Canes could do on the first day of FA? Really? -
Canes Close To Acquiring Brent Burns

I dunno... Burns is like 37 years old and Lane Pederson is a 24 year old right handed center who played in 44 total games in the past 2 seasons between trips back and forth to the AHL. The Sharks are paying 33% of Burns's $8M salary ($2.64M), which means the Canes are paying $5.46M for a 37-year old D-man after trading away a 26-year old, $5M a year D-man. WTF? -

Free agency doesn't start until the 13th at noon. Not a whole lot the Canes can do right now except sign guys already on the roster to extensions. I have a feeling Necas is trade bait. -

Qualifying offers tendered to 8 of the 11 RFAs on the roster: Necas, Lorentz, Mattheos, Bear, Keane, LaJoie, Sellgren, Reunanen. Among the 3 not extended offers was goalie Jack LaFontaine. -
Sadly, there are probably a lot more people in the organization at various levels who probably knew what was going on. And, even more so, there's more to this than meets the eye. Obviously some self-esteem and acceptance issues as well. Who knows what her life was like for it to get to this point.

If you're talking about the newer, cheap 3/16" crap sold at Lowe's; but the better quality 3/8" or 5/16" will stand up a lot better. And I'd be willing to bet that blind nailing the thin stuff as you suggest will do more damage than anything else. Especially if it was a 3" nail as Toldozer said.

That's not demo; that's called salvage and takes a lot more time and patience. You'll spend 75% of the time finding out how things were originally built and installed so you can reverse the process to get it out without too much damage. Until I got into my 60s I did all that stuff myself and I enjoy it. Now, the hard part is conveying to whomever I hire exactly what I'm trying to accomplish and how I want to get there. The thing about your T&G paneling is you can usually flip it over and use the other side if what you've been looking at up til now is too badly damaged or the stain sucks, or whatever. Also, the nail holes will be smaller on the back side of the paneling versus the front.

Tony DeAngelo Traded To The Flyers
Anybodyhome replied to MillionDollarCam's topic in Carolina Hurricanes
It was stated on WRAL last night and this morning the money was the sticking point. If true, then I'm shocked the Canes couldn't or wouldn't pony up $5M a year- 2 years, which is what TDA signed for in Philly. Show me a free agent D-man with numbers even close to his 51 points last season who's available for $5M. Don't bother looking- there isn't one. -

I've read something similar, but I don't know if he's been officially diagnosed. I've having the same issues, and I've spoken with my personal physician a couple times during my annual physicals since I was sick in November 2020, and I've not gotten an actual diagnosis. What difference would it make? It's not like anyone can do anything about it. I hope that's not the case with him.- he's a good kid and I think he has a future on the ice. -

Look at how the Stars started the season and how they finished- like a tale of two teams. Without looking, I'd bet Klingberg got more than half his points in the first half of the season and got most of his PIM during the second half. -

Jake Gardiner no longer needs to be part of this equation. If the Canes keep him, it looks like pure desperation and a lack of confidence they can sign a quality D-man as well as a couple forwards. I'd give Ethan Bear a full, healthy season on the roster before I'd go with Gardiner. Here's a list of right-handed UFA D-men... and this looks like a no-win unless Carolina signs Klingberg. -

I think TDA had something to do with this, to be honest. The fact he went back home, he ha and s a strong charity program and presence in Philly and I heard there was a family issue as well. As I said earlier, it wouldn't surprise me he and Waddell had come to an understanding. After all, Philly was in need and we were probably very close to the same salary. So the Canes took the picks instead. -

He got a 2-year deal in Philly for $5M per year. Canes could have easily done that deal. Not sure why Carolina let him go as an RFA unless TDA told Waddell he wanted to go home. Understand there is a family issue at home also. -

Sh!t. The Canes have 3 D-men on their roster right now. Assuming they bring Chatfield up, that's 4. Gonna bring back Ethan Bear or try to resign the old guys Ian Cole or Brendan Smith? Regardless, the Canes now have a defense issue on top of their need to replace a couple wingers and get a scorer. -

Realistically, he played on a 1-year, $1M deal, but he played like a $6M D-man and quickly made most Canes fans forget who Dougie Hamilton was. If he goes to Philly, it's not necessarily because of the money, but that he gets to go home, where he's got a pretty good-sized charity he's very involved with. -

Will not be happy if the Canes let him go. They will pay dearly trying to find a d-man to replace him. Not to mention the intangibles, like how he managed to get teammates playing grittier last season. -

In other news on Draft Day 1: Toronto traded Peter Mrazek and their 25th pick to Chicago for Chicago's 38th pick. Chicago then drafted a high school blue liner and have to pay Mrazek $3.8M for the next 2 seasons. Chicago is in full rebuild, sending DeBrincat to Ottawa in exchange for the 7th overall this year, a 2nd rounder this year and a 3rd round pick in 2024. DeBrincat has 2 straight 40+ goal seasons at just 24 years old. He was a $6.4M cap it and scheduled to be an RFA after the 22-23 season. Arizona traded up to get Morgan Geekie's brother, Conor, at #11 last night. The Rangers traded goalie Alexander Georgiev to Colorado for a few draft picks down the road. The Avs Darcy Kuemper, who hoisted the Cup this season, is a UFA as Colorado can't afford to keep him. -

He's already fallen off. His offensive skills are still decent, but he's almost a defensive liability at this point. -

Claude Giroux Is Now a Possibility
Anybodyhome replied to Anybodyhome's topic in Carolina Hurricanes
I agree- a little too pricey and would likely mean not being able to sign Nino and may lose TDA along the way. I'm all for trying to find a good winger to complement one of the top 2 lines, depending on how RBA shapes them. But $8M plus is a little steep. Hell, I'd try to keep a younger Trocheck if they're willing to spend that kind of money. Vinny won't sniff $8M, so why not? Strome, Kadri, Perron.... all younger, cheaper and better scorers. -
The only roadblock I see is his $8.275M AAV, puts him right next to Aho at the top of the payroll. https://www.thescore.com/nhl/news/2382262/report-senators-hurricanes-join-oilers-in-pursuit-of-giroux The Ottawa Senators and Carolina Hurricanes are among the potential suitors for pending unrestricted free-agent forward Claude Giroux, reports The Athletic's Pierre LeBrun. The Edmonton Oilers were previously reported to be interested in the 34-year-old. Ottawa would represent a homecoming of sorts for Giroux, who hails from Hearst, Ontario, but moved to Ottawa when he was 14. The Senators have $27 million in projected cap space, per CapFriendly, and are seeking players with pedigree to help their young team get over the hump. The Hurricanes have prioritized adding some offense this offseason and may lose both Vincent Trocheck and Nino Niederreiter to free agency, LeBrun added. Carolina projects to have $19 million in cap space with a roster of 14 players. Martin Necas and Tony DeAngelo are their most notable restricted free agents. Giroux proved in 2021-22 he still has plenty of game left, recording 65 points in 75 games split between the Philadelphia Flyers and Florida Panthers. The versatile veteran is capable of playing both center and wing effectively. Florida is trying to bring Giroux back, LeBrun notes, but the club has just $3 million in projected cap space.
