What kind of damage does gold mining do to the surrounding environment?

Actually it helps the environment. I personally have pulled lead shot out of a stream, and the hobby prospectors pull literally tons of mercury out of streams every years. Also the sediment that is turned up by dredging is a good feeding source for fish.

I'm sure plenty of people have or know someone who has water on their property. Wanting someone else on said property to look for gold is another matter...

Are they prepared to spend 1000's of dollars like I have done on equipment to extract the gold from the dirt? Dredge, highbanker, sluices, dry washer, the list goes on. On the chance that there maybe gold in their stream? Of they can sit back, let 3 guys get wet and spend time searching, processing, panning, classifying, etc and collect 15-20% payoff just for sitting on their duff drinking beer!
