Thoughts from the more knowledgable guys?

My concerns are:

ability to develop
Get most from roster
Build for future.

From what I read is that he is a strong defensive minded guy. He plans on bringing Patrick Ewing with him to be his assistant. So we will see what happens.

Seems like he's paid his dues at the pro level; unlike Dunlap.

Ewing will be good for Biz.

On the surface, I believe hiring a defensive minded coach, with solid NBA experience, is a good move for the organization...  I believe this plays well to what the team does best...  That said, he will be measured more on how he develops young talent, over how well the team plays defensively...

Don't love the move but thank God it wasn't Sampson or Snyder.

High praise from Van Gundy and landing Ewing would be huge.  Hopefully it works out.

If anyone knows Clifford, it's JVG and SVG; those guys go way back.

Just a little background on the hiring...

-The deal is a three year deal just under 6 million dollars with the third year being a team option

- Was as assistant for Jeff Van Gundy in Houston, Stan Van Gundy in Orlando, Mike Brown/Mike D'Antoni in Los Angeles.

- Worked with Patrick Ewing in Orlando.

Ridiculously close relationship with Dwight Howard. I know we're not in on him as a free agent, but if it's money, anonymity, and a coach that gets him then he would have it here. Just a thought.

The legend himself Bernie Bickerstaff was a Lakers assistant and D'Antoni decided not to keep him (huge mistake IMO).  I wonder if he would be interested in being an assistant for his old team.

I wasn't thrilled with the Dunlap hiring, but I kinda thought firing after one year was a little lame, but hiring a guy with actual NBA experience seems like a good decision.

I would be lying if I said the thought didn't cross my mind but I just can't see us in that race.

But just for giggles and daydreaming imagine a defense with Clifford at coach, Kemba, Oladipo, MKG, Biz, and Howard.

Sure we may not ever score more than 80 points but neither would our opponents. Lol

I was actually thinking the same thing...

If it comes down to money and comfort, he'll end up in Charlotte. If it's all about winning, he'll be in Houston or Dallas.

JVG with a nice little shout out to Clifford during the Memphis/San Antonio game.

Saves the embarrassment of a Snyder hire. Seems like solid hire, lots of experience in the NBA.

I like it. Now when can we start dropping wasted cash off the books? Has that already happened? I wonder if Clifford can help us in the FA market?

Wow!  Been gone most of the day and I was playing ball when the news broke and came back to turn the game on and hear we made the hire.

Not sure if I like it, but I can't say too much negative about it as I'm not overly familiar with him.  BUT, players that have played for JVG respect him despite him not having any notable playing experience on his resume, and he LOVES the hire.  The other reason I'm extremely optimistic about the hire is that he has "paid his dues" in the pro ranks, as JVG mentioned during the game.  That makes a HUGE difference with players.  We aren't talking about a guy like Dunlap or Lawrence Frank...  He's been around for years, and usually respect comes with that.  He'll have little stories and anecdotes about former players to use as teaching skills and that builds trust with players...

So for those reasons, I'm very excited about this hire.  It's definitely a completely different feel than I had for the Dunlap hire - I hated that one immediately and saw no good that could come of it, but tried to give it a chance.
