Clausen Has Improved

I know there's the usual caveats about third strings and underthrown balls and head-scratching plays, but the primary difference I saw in Clausen's play tonight and his play throughout the rest of his Panthers tenure is that he was being very decisive in his reads. I definitely think much of his issues this preseason stemmed from terrible line protection, but since the Steelers weren't rushing every other play Clausen didn't spend have the game on his back for a change.

He put a lot of underneath passes right in the receivers hands, and rarely used the check down (as his 9 for 19 line indicates.) His TD throw to green was a terrific strike, and he utilized Barnidge and Joe Jon Finley nicely on a few throws across the middle of the field. His TD throw to Bryant was almost all Bryant, however.

I was legitimately surprised. He's by no stretch a threat to Cam or Derek for that matter, as our vertical offense is a mismatch for his skills, but he could probably run a play-action dominated offense like Kansas City's to a decent degree.

But really, Clausen has improved and I hope to god some team makes an offer. a 7th round pick is good man. I would be ecstatic.

I just want to know why he wouldnt throw to Smitty! Im glad he didnt because we got Cam due to him not throwing to 89. But why the hell was he scared to throw to Smitty in '10? I even remember before one game a shot of Smitty telling him throw the ball up and he would grab it.

But the thing is, could he play against 1st string defenses? The answer is hell to the no. He gets chased around like a headless chicken by 3rd string nobodies causing him to look retarded and make weird passes.

He went 9-19 vs 3rd stringers. He's still nothing special or something even remotely close to being a good NFL QB.

He's improved a little, but what's the point of keeping a developmental QB around when we have a 23 year old franchise QB?

Doesn't matter if we waste a roster spot with a 3rd QB.

It's hilarious how I got torched on this board in 2010 when the Panthers drafted this guy and I was oh so close to selling my PSLs and trying to tell the world he was a bad investment.

Clausen could improve more than any QB in history and still not be a quality starter. Sure, he's better, but he began at such a low level it doesn't matter.

Not sure how you can say Clausen has improved playing against Steeler scrubs. I bet he would look great against a high school or college team too, but in a regular season game.......well, we've seen what that looks like. Heck, we've seen it this preseason.

We honestly only need 2 QBs. I'm pretty sure that we will be fine with just Cam and DA. I hope the coaching staff realizes that. Hopefully somebody more deserving doesn't get cut just to be able to keep clausen.

Dear God.....are you 12 years old?

I think that his message board has degraded to the point of no return.

I remember the Good Old Days (only 3-4 years ago) when the posters on here were intelligent, informed, and respectable. The days when Zod actually enforced the age limit. Over the past 18 months, it has turned into a Day Care Service. Parent dropping off their idiot children in front of a computer and forcing the rest of us to deal with them.

That is all.

Without reading too much into it, I have to say I was happy to see Jimmy do well. Yeah, he sucked in 2010, and under NO circumstances would I like to see him under center for us (tossing salt over my shoulder, knocking on wood, spitting against ill fate). But the guy has done what was asked of him and been a good teammate for the last two years with never a peep of ill humor or resentment, even though he MUST have been feeling some. If he can slowly climb out of the hole he dug two years ago to have some kind of a career int he NFL, I say good on him.

Whether the improvements in that game could translate into live football or not, Clausen showed some huge strides compared to how he used to play. It wasn't just that he was playing against 3rd stringers or whatever - it was his ball placement and his willingness to go long. He had some terrible throws, yeah, but he also had some real nice ones, including a couple crazy drops that were right on the money. He's probably not worth a roster spot here, but if he lands in the right place with the right staff, I think he has a chance to be at least a good backup for the right kind of offense.
