Monroe — A Dundee man was arraigned Monday on a weapons charge after police said he left his handgun on a bedroom floor, where a 3 1/2-year-old boy picked it up and shot himself to death.

Joshua Greenhill, 30, was charged in 1st District Court in Monroe with careless discharge of a firearm causing injury or death. The charge is a misdemeanor that carries up to two years in jail.

The boy, Damon Holbrook, died Sunday at an Ann Arbor hospital. According to Dundee police, the boy picked up a gun that Greenhill left on the floor of a bedroom closet in a home in the 300 block of Rawson Street and shot himself in the head.

Dundee Police Chief David Uhl said the tragedy underscores the need for caution with guns. “This could have been avoided,” he said.

In North Carolina the guy would not have been hi with a weapons charge, he would have been arrested on child endangerment charge.

In NC, no problems leaving guns laying around the house.

So can people now carry an AR-15 into a park in NC?
