David Newton's take on the 89 situation: Can't accuse him of being a tool of the FO

"Hey. The panthers aren't showing their hand whatsoever. Wtf we need a story ( a voice in the background) ' hey gettleman said he is evaluating smitty, like every other player in the roster'... Bingo. Can't wait to break this. Some one go tell Smitty what gentleman said. Its ok to paraphrase nbd. Ask what he thinks. ' so just tell him they are thinking of dumping him?' .. Yeah whatever" (Media, 2014, up an asshole) Sent from my XT1055 using CarolinaHuddle mobile app

So you think Gettleman saying Steve Smith is getting evaluated is what started this story?

this is the downside of the offseason. That

the media says something incredibly stupid and the fans run with it. I can't wait till this gets put to rest.

Even Cam wasn't given untouchable designation from Gettleman last year, and nobody deserves a spot on this team more than he does.

It's just the way Gettleman deals.

What did the media say that was so incredibly stupid?

They reported that Gettleman said :

"We're going through the whole process. Steve's had a great career. He really has. None of us are here forever. He's part of the evaluation process. That's just the way it is"

It wasn't quite as simple as "Steve is being evaluated like everyone else" and the media ran with it despite what many on here would like to believe.

It bothered Steve enough to call his good friend's radio show (while he was still on vacation" and saying:

“I would have wished that I would have been afforded the opportunity been given a heads up by our GM and coach Rivera when I did my exit meeting,” Smith said. “No one spoke to me about it, in that manner. The unfortunate part of it was I had to hear it second-hand; I didn’t get to hear it behind closed doors or face-to-face. I heard it through third party or through the internet. That part, to be honest and transparent, is a little discouraging.”

He also had quite a bit more to say that showed he was none to pleased.

Now THAT is when the story went National and rightfully so. Blame Gettleman or blame Steve, but the media was just doing their job. It is a story whether people like it or not.

For the record, I think it was a big misunderstanding and a poor choice of words on Gettleman's part and it will all be smoothed over (if it hasn't already) and Steve will finish his career here as he intends to.

we're on the same side here.

I was referring to the few pieces that have been written, making this thing much bigger than it is.

Although if Steve Smith wanted to prove he was the better man, he would have called Gettleman directly, instead of a radio show.
