Relaying the look of exotic animals to preindustrial cultures

Recommended Posts

Imagine being the dude who came back to Europe after... let's say some of the initial discoveries of the Borneo rainforest.

Would you feel comfortable in describing animals, the environment and overall biome?  Would you feel pressure to get it right and properly portray it?

I'm sure someone had to describe the tarsier to someone at some point and failed miserably at the description.

Ya kno?

Do they have "big cats" in Europe?  I couldn't imagine seeing a tiger for the first time, in person, with no reference point to know what it is.

Seriously.  Imagine the dude who first saw a Giraffe.  He was probably like:

"What the f*ck is that thing?!"
