Unfortunately, there just wasn’t a way. In order to fit Nino under the cap the Canes would have needed to unload all of Gardiner’s contract which probably just wasn’t possible. Cap space is at a premium and most teams weren’t going to take back Gardiner without a large incentive (think Drury or even Morrow). A late first isn’t as valuable as cap space so attaching just a first for all of Gardiner’s cap hit probably wasn’t going to cut it. The Canes could still have something planned. They could upgrade on Necas for someone like Tarasenko (or another top six forward) by attaching Gardiner and retaining 50% which would open about $6M in cap space. Necas, Gardiner (@ 50%), a first rounder, and a B prospect like Koivunen, Rees, or Suzuki should be able to bring in a really solid top six forward to complete our group.

Bear’s arbitration is set for August 8th, just get a third or fourth for him before the case and let’s just move on.

I’d be all about Tarasenko as well. We were in on him last year.

I’d do that and throw in an extra first if they take Gardiner.

Ortiz, like Franco, is on his way out of Charlotte. The writing was on the wall last night when he wasn’t included in the team. Both Ortiz and Franco were supposed to be a big part of Charlotte FC’s success but things didn’t work out. If I’m not mistaken, Charlotte now has two international slots available. The MLS summer transfer window closes on August 4th.

The team defense was superb last night. There were certainly times when Chelsea was dinking the ball around a lot but our boys stayed calm and didn’t lose shape. I still think overall we had just as many dangerous opportunities as Chelsea, though Chelsea certainly had more possession overall. Anywho, Chelsea will be fine as they were obviously missing some guys but it was still a big night for our group. On a different note… what the hell happened to Everton.

The boys showed what they are capable of, need this type of cohesiveness every game.

Overall, a solid first half from our guys. Chelsea had most of the possession but Charlotte certainly had chances as well. What was really nice to see is how good our defensive shape and team defense was. Outside of Pulsic’s goal off of an unlucky deflection, Chelsea didn’t create many high danger chances.

In the meantime, Tepper has bailed on another project.
