  1. BREAKING: The Carolina Panthers have fired Charlie Rock, of the team's communications department, for an insensitive post regarding the murder of Charlie Kirk, a source familiar with the organization's decision tells me. Story to come.
  2. A source familiar with the team’s decision to move on from an employee confirmed that Charlie Rock, the team’s football communications coordinator, is no longer with the organization. https://x.com/dnewtonespn/status/1966148134440153196?s=46&t=xeIgh_-Vr2aKxBkBJdfnKA
  3. some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch The Huddle burn
  4. Disappointing production in Week 1: Xavier Legette caught just three of his seven targets for 10 total receiving yards against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Legette's grades weren't any better: His 54.2 receiving grade in Week 1 marked the 17th straight game that he’s recorded a sub-67.0 receiving grade. https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-xavier-legette-struggling-to-justify-carolina-panthers-first-round-investment

  6. You would think, having the entire offseason to work on his footwork, it would have improved. I haven't given up on Bryce but damn, its not looking good at all.
  7. I want to answer this with caution. Last year, in this very Week 1 column, I wrote about how rough Young looked in the season opener and how I did not see an NFL future for him. What sort of offense could work around a quarterback that fearful of pressure, that unwilling to throw over the middle, that lacking premier physical traits? Of course, Young was benched, then came back and had a decent finish to 2024. It wasn't anything revolutionary, but it was better than I thought an offense could be built around Young. My foot was firmly in my mouth. So you shouldn't be completely out for that reason. We have seen it work for Young at times -- the Week 18 game against Atlanta, along with Week 12 against the Chiefs. Dave Canales can do enough with Young that, in theory, a team with a great running game and great defense could get over the hump. But the Panthers do not have a great running game and certainly don't have a great defense. As we saw against the Jaguars, Young still harbors plenty of that erratic, undersized, overwhelmed passer we saw for much of 2023 and 2024. It's a thin needle to thread, building a team around a QB who has to throw with so much anticipation but also mostly outside of the numbers. The passing game becomes one-dimensional and predictable. Last year I said a flat "no" on Young. Hopefully I'm a year wiser now. So it's not a hard "no." But I remain very dubious.
  8. From Dan: Is there any reason I shouldn't be completely out on Bryce Young? I'm hearing lots of excuses from some fans/media, and of course it's not all his fault. But what reasons should I have to believe that he could be a QB that leads a team to the playoffs? Because I'm struggling to find them.

  12. The "Cali Connection" is strong Trevin Wallace's bad day Bryce Young's not-so-great day D.J. Wonnum among some standout defensive players Center Austin Corbett had a bad game. The starting veteran center had multiple errant snaps that disrupted the timing and rhythm of the offense. Legette is taking a good brunt of the loss after a subpar performance. He botched on the fundamentals, failing to get his feet in bounds on a few empty catches and coming up rather sluggish in blocking. Safety Nick Scott was inconsistent in his tackling and communication. Rookie Lathan Ransom had just nine snaps defensively. Cornerback Chau Smith-Wade looked solid at the nickel, showcasing reliability in pass coverage. He had a fine repetition on a third-down incompletion to Thomas Jr. Head coach Dave Canales had a rough day calling plays. Some of his choices in certain areas were underwhelming, and put the offense in compromising spots during key situational moments. The Jaguars seemed to have tells on what Canales was going to call and planned accordingly.
  13. Dave Canales: I’d love to see our young players on the field on defense, I’m pushing that “I’m pushing that,” Canales said. “I’d love for all of our young guys to play. I really believe that it’s so valuable for those guys to be out there. Are they going to be perfect? No. Will every rep that they take be valuable and beneficial for their future? Yes. And so I would love for those guys to get opportunities out there so that we can see what we have. And then also just knowing it’s a long season and a lot of people are going to play at different times, it’ll help us going forward.” Asked if he’s pushed for more playing time for young guys in a conversation with defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero, Canales said he talks about it with his coaching staff. “Just collectively, as a staff, it’s just like, ‘Hey guys, let’s play these young guys. We’re gonna need everybody,’” Canales said. The reality, however, is that Canales is the head coach. He decides who plays. He doesn’t have to “push” anything, he can just send the young players on the field. The Panthers turned in an ugly performance in Sunday’s opener, and if Canales wasn’t satisfied with who was on the field, he should have changed that during the game. https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill
