I like Horn, but damn that'd be a disappointing pick at #8.

Nope.

Riot report breakdown how generational is Sewell
LinvilleGorge replied to raleigh-panther's topic in Carolina Panthers
Virtually all receiving TEs spend a lot of time split out in today's NFL. All the chest thumping about "pro style offenses", but the college game has been the driver of innovation in the game for quite some time now. The modern NFL offense is a lot closer to a "gimmicky" college offense that would've been scoffed at years ago than it is the venerable "pro style offense" of the '80s. -
Wait, I thought we were just talking about guys drafted since 2010 per the link you were spiking the football over?
-
I mean, he was literally the best bad option left. All that Darnold moved screamed was that we absolutely were NOT rolling with Teddy again no matter what.
-
No you haven't. Now you have your choice. Roll with the rookie or stick with Darnold. Trade the other. Or if we didn't pickup Darnold's option, let him walk and take the 3rd round comp pick.
-
As I've laid out many times and right above, it's not just my opinion. Several other options had to fail for us to trade for Darnold. That's reality. I'm not going to engage in mental gymnastics to try to convince myself that we planned all along to end up with Sam Darnold.
-
I don't think he was as high as #3. Watson seems clearly #1. Then we made a significant trade offer for Stafford. And it was reported that we at least reached out to Miami about #3 overall.
-
Rings are the only indicator of success? Either way, now do the same for former top 10 busts on their second team...
-
Joe Person reported after the trade that the Panthers were picking up the option, so take that for whatever it's worth considering the source.
-
He was the best bad option available at the time and we are expecting the QBs we would like at #8 to not be available at #8. Hence why Darnold's presence should have no impact on what we do at #8. If a QB we like but didn't expect to be available is available, draft him.
-
It makes no sense because we're keeping our options open. If they're bluffing they shouldn't have been openly talking about how they planned to pickup the option.
-
Like Sam Darnold is? Top 10 picks probably have a lot higher success rates than former top 10 pick busts bouncing back elsewhere.
-
Bingo. That's all I'm saying. Darnold should have zero impact on what we do with the 8th overall pick. If we were truly sold on Sam Darnold we wouldn't be stalling on picking up that 5th year option.
-
Because I was wrong about Herbert after saying he had all the physical tools due to what he showed at Oregon? And now their new QB has transferred to escape their training wheels system that made me highly doubt Herbert in the first place? Okay...
-
I'm gonna mock you relentlessly if (likely "when") we're in this same situation again next year.

Pitts is generational as far as TEs go. He's probably the most dynamic TE prospect since Vernon Davis. I'd consider that generational. -

Could make him a generational player, but he's not a generational prospect right now as is. -

Do you understand the term "generational'? That reply strongly suggests not. -
https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2021/04/27/mike-tomlin-on-steelers-draft-room-art-rooney-is-the-boss/ “Mr. Rooney’s the boss,” Tomlin said. “Kevin and I have worked so well and so long together that we can kind of communicate nonverbally in those moments. But at the end of the day, Art Rooney is the boss.” This is the environment Tepper knew as a minority owner and I get the vibe that it's the same story in Panthers land. At the end of the day, if Fields is there at #8 and Tepper wants an exciting new face of the franchise at QB, he's our pick IMO.

I hope not. I hope we have the opportunity to either draft that QB or take the trade haul if we don't.

Generational LT talents aren't talked about as possible late top 10 picks. He's a damn good prospect, but no he's not generational. -
Crazier things have happened. The #1 overall pick was between Alex Smith and Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers ended up going #24. Yeah, he did it for clickbait but it won't be shocking if one of the QBs takes a slide. A slide all the way to #32? Yeah, I doubt that.
-
The Jets have been ruining QBs for decades. Why stop now?
-
I hope you're right. All I'm saying is that the Darnold wishful thinkers are playing the same mental gymanstics that the Teddy wishful thinkers were last year. It'll finally be different for the player here because... well, basically because I hope so. I hope so too, but I don't think so.
