Canales doesn't sound all the way sold on Bryce
LinvilleGorge replied to TD alt's topic in Carolina Panthers
Yep, the Panthers powers that be seem desperate to convince themselves he can clear the bare minimum bar of demanding a legit franchise QB contract. Canales seems to be laying the groundwork here of building the case that all of Bryce's shortcomings are still there and even more glaring than you may have thought while his strengths aren't nearly as strong as you had hoped and aren't near enough to make up for the lack of pure physical tools. When you have historically anomalous lack of measurables you need historically anomalous positive intangibles to make up for it. That was always issue with Bryce as a prospect. Like Parcells said when evaluating him, "he better walk on water". -
I'm honestly not sure how much "west coast" plays into it. There's a huge difference between Tucson, AZ and Spokane, WA where he spent the previous two decades of his career. Chapel Hill is significantly different than Spokane but way more similar to it than Tucson. You're talking about a pretty significant plane ride to get back home either way. He and his family would be flying private and direct so we're talking about a 3ish hour flight vs. a 5ish hour flight. That's basically a wash. It's not like he went from Gonzaga to another PNW program. Tucson is a dramatic departure from Washington state. Honestly a far bigger departure climatically and scenery wise than Chapel Hill would be.

Canales doesn't sound all the way sold on Bryce
LinvilleGorge replied to TD alt's topic in Carolina Panthers
Honestly, this is pretty alarming stuff. The things Canales is talking about Bryce needing to do better at were the exact reasons why Bryce was drafted. Bryce was never going to be the prototypical 6'5" 240 rocket launcher arm guy. He was supposed to be able to make up for his physical shortcomings by being a "superprocessor with a PG mentality". Now here is Canales basically saying that he has to become a better processor and learn to play with a PG mentality. Honestly, this feels like starting to build your case for why we need to move on at QB. -
Lloyd just created leverage for himself to get the best possible situation. He saw UNC as the better job, but if you can get a massive raise at Arizona and basically be the Nick Saban of Arizona answering to no one, I mean... yeah, that's a sweet deal. I'd stay put too. I'd rather be the unquestioned king of Arizona basketball than the head coach of UNC basketball.

The Bengals absolutely fuged up paying Higgins elite WR money. You can't have your QB and two WRs eating up your whole cap or you end up with... well, the Bengals. Your QB is getting killed because your OL is trash and you can't stop anybody because your D is trash because you can't afford a balanced roster. Unless you're smacking it out of the park in the draft you're gonna be hard pressed to put a good team on the field despite an elite QB and WRs.
-
Meanwhile, entire OL is either aging, trying to come back from serious injury, and/or on short term contracts. A WR would very much be a panic prop Bryce up move. If you're actually trying to build a balanced long-term roster there's better arguments for most other position groups on the roster. We ha e a young stud in T-Mac. Another promising youngster opposite him and slot WRs can be found in the mid to late rounds or mid-level FA contracts. Slot WR at 19 given our roster would be crazy

Who was the better HC - Rivera or McDermott?
LinvilleGorge replied to t96's topic in Carolina Panthers
This isn't even close. Rivera never had back to back winning seasons and finished his career with an overall losing record at 102-103. McD only had one losing season in 9 and had 7 straight 10+ win seasons and is currently only 4 wins away from Ron's win total but he has 53 fewer losses.- 12 replies

Yeah, UNC isn't going to hired a non-alum 20 year assistant at Gonzaga with no HC experience. But his success at Arizona clearly shows they should have.
-
Yeah, you don't say something like that at his age in the prime of your coaching career unless you're gone. It's not like he's retirement age where it would be understandable to be thinking about the wellbeing of the program after you hang it up. If he wins a national championship and leaves that job to come to UNC, that's the most blue blood baller move ever. I mean, when we poached Roy from Kansas Roy wad coming home. Poaching a guy with no ties to the program who just won a national championship at a really good program would be next level flexing on the college basketball world.

Sure seems like they want to go OT/LB with the top two picks.

ESPN'S Matt Miller's pick predictions for Rounds 1-7
LinvilleGorge replied to TheSpecialJuan's topic in Carolina Panthers
A guard and a nickelback with our first two picks? About the only way you could get less positional value would be to take a fullback and a punter. -
It's a pretty remarkable title drought they're on considering the amount of NBA talent they've had stop by for a cup of coffee on their way to being a lottery pick.

Sometimes the jokes write themselves.

What a dickhead.

Roy won 19 his first year them proceeded to win 30+ in four of the next five.

The folks wanting MJ more involved might be getting their wish. Word is we had MJ call Tommy Lloyd to have a talk.

I'd hate to see it if you WERE a lover. LOL Proctor looks like Temu Mekhi Becton to me. Becton was a significantly better mover at the college level than Proctor and he busted hard as an NFL OT and has still even been terrible at OG because he still gets exposed in space even on the inside. There's a reason why most NFL OL are significantly smaller than these guys. The Jonathan Ogdens of the world are absolute unicorns.
-
Same. I think NFL speed rushers are gonna eat his lunch. And yeah, pretty much everyone that starts on the OL at Bama is at minimum gonna get a chance to play in the NFL. The overall unit is going to be one of the best on the country at the college level every year.
-
Proctor is gonna be a love/hate prospect and even his lovers will likely admit that the bust factor is high. You gotta want a giant mauler of an OT to love him and even if you want a giant mauler OT you're still concerned if he's going to have the movement skills in space to handle NFL speed rushers. Honestly, I think he's gonna bust.
-
He specifically didn't say LB. I'd make note of that. Very well could indicate that's the target position.
-
It's why I hated the Butler and Shaq picks. When we made those picks, DT and LB were probably our strongest position groups and we looked past huge needs to make luxury picks for depth and future development. Now if we'd drafted guys who developed into perennial All Pros, all good. But that's kinda what you need to justify those types of luxury picks. Some would argue that Shaq justified it. I wouldn't. Just because we ended up paying him like an All Pro doesn't mean he was an All Pro (note: he wasn't). Butler was an outright bust which makes it a really tough pill to swallow for a luxury pick.
-
I get it. When you have obvious pressing needs you're ideally looking for a starter at #19. Obviously you draft for depth later in the draft but you want early impact out of your early picks. The context of that quote was the 19th overall pick. The other thing to note is that this is also peak lying season. You don't want to telegraph your intentions. Even if we were seriously considering or even targeting OT at 19 the smart move would be to downplay it. Virtually everyone expected us to go pass rusher in the 1st last year and lo and behold we go WR which very few people were talking about as a legit possibility.
