Yeah Brown is a better fit to meet our biggest need. Wharton can come in and rush the passer--7 sacks? Pretty solid.
-
We are keeping Tuttle?
-
I am relieved the Milton deal fell through--about like I was when Cleveland stole Watson from us.

Reading tea leaves: The draft is pretty solid at DT (3-4 DE). I don't think Wharton, and Brown change the fact that we could draft one. Pat Jones does not eliminate a need at Edge. I think we will draft a pure pass rusher. We are still razor thin at CB. Getting Jackson back was huge for us, however. I am not sure how much they like Evans and Bartholomew, but both (especially Evans) played pretty well down the stretch. Good enough depth? Conspiracy theory: Draft Will Johnson and play Jackson at nickel. It seems to me that we now have 2 Strong Safeties. We need a free safety or two. I heard nothing about TE or WR today. Does that mean we will draft those positions? I really like about 4 Tight Ends in this draft, maybe 5. WR? I think the draft is more of a gamble, but I am wondering about TMac right now. The focus in free agency on defense makes sense. Evero has types and in free agency, you can match a skill set to your needs with more precision than the draft. The focus was on stopping the run, and with the exception of Wharton, every defensive player excels in that area. Pass rush is still a concern, imo.

Noooooo! A fifth round rookie would too.

I missed Tershawn Wharton. Just stumbled over it. Here is how I see the DE Milton Williams failed deal ($26m per year). The Panthers then sign NT Bobby Brown for $7m and DE Wharton for $18m. In other words, the Panthers get 2 solid players for $25m-- $1m less than the Milton contract. WHAT PANTHERS GOT FOR $25m (combined): DE Tershawn Wharton: 7 sacks, 68.3 pass rush grade. 44.3 run defense grade. NT Bobby Brown: 0 sacks, 67.7 run defense grade. Overall PFF rating: 63.3 WHAT PATRIOTS GOT FOR $26m: Milton Williams: 6 sacks, 90.0 pass rush grade. 43.1 run defense grade.

So Mike Jackson got a two-year, $14.5 million deal. That is a good length and amount. IMO, we need another CB. Smith-Wade (NB), Jackson, and Horn is not that strong and it is thin. Maybe we can draft one or pick up another. Man, this roster was bare.

yep

two effeminate men and a drugged up wife beater. (too soon?)

Cuts that could follow and savings: Shy Tuttle $3.2 (I think we can get equal productivity out of a day 3 rookie draft pick) DJ Wonnum $6.2 (I don't see this--I see Wonnum and Jones both playing the strong Edge. Cuts will be to Johnson and maybe Barno) Nijman $3.5 (May wait to see if we draft a T--remember, Cade Mays played T in college) M. Sanders $6.2 (He has a bonus payout coming up in a few days. He is GONE. J. Clowney $7.75 (For an established edge with a little tire tread left, you probably can't cut Clowney) Barno $1m DJ Johnson $1m THat is about all the meat I could pick off the bone. I am NOT suggesting that we cut them all. I normally don't get into salaries, but these #s come from OTC. https://overthecap.com/salary-cap/carolina-panthers

Go get Bryan Murphy to play across from Horn
-
Makes me cringe--but different strokes.

SOOOOOOO.... The Panthers are already much better vs. the run than they were yesterday. First of all, Horn is a very strong tackling CB. Their new Safety Moehrig will terrorize the box. Our New Edge (Jones) will play the strong side and he and Moehrig will hold the edge and shut down those cut backs that killed us last year. And finally, Bobby Brown (NT) is not only a plug, he makes tackles. I am SO HAPPY that we missed on Milton (which is not to suggest that Brown was a consolation prize--different positions.) It saved us $20m per year. Defensive Needs: DE, NT depth, CB, S, Edge, LB. Offensive Needs: WR, TE, RT, RB

Your league source is Ian Rappaport on TV.
-
SO we get a MUCH BETTER TACKLING interior defensive lineman for three years and if he reaches all of his incentives, he costs us the SAME as NEW ENGLAND paid for one year of service from a pass-rushing 3-4 DE. Now, by saving about $20m per year, I wonder if we can sign a CB and a S?

Big pay leads to higher expectations. We would have been disappointed. His stats were achieved in the best possible conditions last year. Teams had to pass against them--pin your ears back and go. And the OL was not trying to stop him--they were focused on his teammates. Good player, but not Aaron Donald.

I think this showed that Morgan had discipline, based on what I assume happened. It is so easy to overspend in free agency. Be patient.
-
That worked out for us. His market value was estimated between $15 and $20m. $26m? Nearly double the low end. The draft is so loaded at that position, I do not get the inflation in free agency.
-
Jevon Holland had a knee injury and did not play that well in 2024--not sure why people are not talking about that. A free safety I would love? Justin Reid. 27

Patrick jones is good vs the run too.
-
He is strong vs the run, and at 265, probably will take Wonnum's spot (if they cut Wonnum) basically, he could rotate with Wonnum (another former Viking). 26 years of age--they are pretty much the same player, but Jones has more sacks, Wonnum has more hurries.

Here is what we know: Morgan was not looking to sign a bunch of JAGs. He was going for a top Safety and a top Defensive Lineman. Signing a top CB (Horn), a top S, and he whiffed on a DT (calling DE a DT to avoid confusion). S: I think Moehrig will be the qb of the secondary and since S is deep in this draft, the other S may come on day 2 of the draft. CB: I think they will slow play the second CB, hoping maybe to get Jackson back on the cheap.
