  1. Last Time Out: After being held to just one goal in their previous two games, losses to Toronto and Florida, the Canes found their offense Thursday night against Edmonton. Andrei Svechnikov recorded his second hat trick in as many games against the Oilers this season, picking up his 100th career goal on the way. #37's trio was supplemented by goals from all three members of the Jordan Martinook, Jordan Staal and Jesper Fast line, providing Carolina with more than enough offense to earn the victory. The effort was backstopped by Pyotr Kochetkov in his 2022-23 season debut, making 20 stops, including a first period penalty shot against Dylan Holloway. Super Svech: After starting the season with eight goals in nine games, Andrei Svechnikov had been held out of the goal department for three consecutive games prior to Thursday. He broke out of that minor drought in a major way, becoming just the fifth different player in franchise history to record multiple hat tricks in the same season. His 11 goals now rank third league-wide, trailing only Bo Horvat (12) and Connor McDavid (15). Numbers For Necas: Martin Necas registered two assists in the win over Edmonton, his sixth multi-point game and fourth multi-assist game in 2022-23, both of which are team highs. His six multi-point outings rank tied for sixth in the NHL this season, trailing only Connor McDavid (EDM, 9), Leon Draisaitl (EDM, 7), Erik Karlsson (SJS, 7), Nathan MacKinnon (COL, 7) and David Pastrnak (BOS, 7). Don't Overlook The Man Advantage: Brent Burns' power play goal on Thursday gave the Hurricanes a tally on the man advantage in five of their last six games. Injury Report: Forward Ondrej Kase has been in concussion protocol since October 13. Goaltender Frederik Andersen was placed on injured reserve Friday, retroactive to November 6. Forward Teuvo Teravainen is not expected to play tonight after suffering an upper-body injury in Thursday's victory. ------------------------------------------------ For the Avs, Francouz (0-3-0) was announced as the netminder for tonight. The Avs are favored, being the current champs as well as being a home game, regardless of their record.
  2. That save he made on the breakaway... he went way out of the crease and went stick on puck while sprawling was gutsy as hell. Not sure we'll ever see that from a young goalie ever again. On any team. That took gigantic balls.
  3. The Canes have a propensity for reacting to a substandard stretch just like they did last night. A couple bad games, a couple games without getting pucks in the net followed by a blowout with goals coming in bunches. Happened 3 or 4 times last year. Just wish they could do the same in the playoffs.
  4. I haven't watched a Panther game for quite some time. Might actually tune that one in shortly. Waiting for someone else to score? Burns, Martinook, Staal- the vets show some leadership.
  5. The Canes have more points on the board than the Panthers right now.
  6. I would be surprised to see Burns change anything about his style of play. Not gonna happen with a vet who's been around as long as he has. That being said, the best D pair on the roster right now is Skjei and Pesce. Pyotr is expected to start the Oilers game tonite. RBA needs to make some line changes as well. Major line changes. The only line playing with any consistency is the Staal line, even Martinook is playing with a fire under him.
  7. This is not good hockey right now. They'll get shut out again tomorrow unless something changes overnight.
  8. Always liked that clip of Jordo net front with Yanni Gourde, finally gets the goal while Gourde complained to the ref.
  9. This ia important game. Sets the tone for the rest of the road trip.
  10. Yeah, don't know what he was thinking. No backside help coming, gotta take away the middle.
  11. Coghlan got beat like a drum in front of Raanta. Canes are getting out-hustled. No jump, Florida dictating the pace.
  12. Drury, Kochetov Recalled From Chicago: General Manager Don Waddell announced a pair of transactions for the club in their two days since their contest against Toronto, bringing up forward Jack Drury and goaltender Pyotr Kochetkov from Chicago (AHL). Since October 13, when forward Ondrej Kase was placed into concussion protocol, the Canes have had a roster that's included zero healthy extra forwards. But now with three of the team's next four games coming on the road, including a trip out to Denver, the team felt it was time to add an extra body up front. "I'm not sure if he's going to get in right away, but we need to have that extra body," Rod Brind'Amour said following Tuesday's skate at Invisalign Arena. "He's the top forward [in Chicago]" the head coach continued. "I know he hasn't put up points, but that doesn't really mean anything. It was an easy choice." Drury has produced one goal and two assists through eight games this season with the Wolves. After the recalling up the team's 2018 second round pick on Monday, the team followed that up with the recalling of their 2019 second round pick the next day. Pyotr Kochetkov joined the team in Florida ahead of tonight's contest on an emergency basis after goaltender Frederik Andersen left Tuesday's practice early. Immediately after practice Brind'Amour said, "I don't know what happened there. I'll go in and check on him, but I don't know. He did something." Hours later it was made official that Kochetkov would be joining Raanta for at least tonight's contest. Naughty By Necas: Although his career-long six-game point streak came to a halt on Sunday, Martin Necas enters Wednesday's play tied for 10th among all NHL skaters with his 17 points. Already with five multi-point games to his name, #88 has only not registered in two of the team's 12 games this season. Streaking Svech: Forward Andrei Svechnikov, who enters tonight tied for ninth league-wide with his eight goals, also has a point in four straight games. Injury Report: Forward Ondrej Kase has been in concussion protocol since October 13. Goaltender Frederik Andersen left practice early on Tuesday due to an undisclosed injury. On The Other Side: Florida has started their time under Paul Maurice 7-5-1. Forward Matthew Tkachuk leads the way with 17 points in 12 games, however, he won't be on the ice tonight as he serves the second game of his two-game suspension. Former Hurricane Eric Staal remains in search of his first point after being inked to a one-year deal in late October. ------------------------------------------- Carolina is favored tonite on the road and Florida is starting Spencer Knight (4-1-0) in goal. Obviously, Raanta is starting for the Canes.
  13. Not only are injuries becoming an issue, they only seem to occur when the team is facing the slightest adversity. Sure, last season may have started with a bang, the team goes undefeated in October, and no matter how much of an aberration that may have been, this October's 2 losses look huge in comparison. The team isn't playing well right now, but I have to believe it's related to the number of new guys in new roles. But Andersen hasn't looked that good, allowing some pretty lazy goals. So, a little adversity, much like last season heading into the playoffs, and all of a sudden there's an injury.
  14. Not to mention the only "farmers" able to afford it are the huge agri-corps like Cargill, ADM, Bayer...
  15. Freddie's save percentage is atrocious thus far. Of course, some of that has to do with him not seeing a lot of shots. But, last night as an example, he only saw 21 shots and let 3 in. 1 was soft, the third was amateur hour stuff. No matter if Slavin got worked, there's no way that goal should have slid under that easily. And let's talk about Slavin's play.... it's suffering with Brent Burns on the other side. Slavin is not comfortable with Burns and he seems to be working overtime trying to cover for Burns. Burns will make a good play, but he'll also make 3 bad ones in between the good ones. Toney DeAngelo got away with being a little more aggressive and jumping in on occasion or pinching deep, but he has the speed and quickness to make up for it. Burns does not. Slavin doesn't trust him yet, and it's costing the team defense. The team's issues right now are the blue line, specifically the Slavin-Burns pair and Chatfield. The new guys are still developing trust and the pairings are not comfortable with each other yet. I wouldn't mind seeing Chatfield on the bench for a couple games and let Coghlan get some ice time.
  16. Lost to an average team. Geez, that was deserved. Did not play well.
  17. Looking very slow, and they had a day off. Not good tonight.
  18. Just me or has Turbo been invisible this season?
  19. Get some net front. Canes are just firing at will, but need to take the goalies eyes away.
  20. Shut the fug up already about Toronto, ESPN. Holy sh!t, just stop! It's fugging non-stop with these people.
  21. Is ESPN paying Matthew's contract? Fug, they won't shut up about him. The greatest American hockey player ever? Please.
