CLEVELAND (AP)—Danny Ferry didn’t agree with the decision to fire Cleveland’s coach. He knew re-signing superstar free agent LeBron James(notes) would be difficult. He felt his authority as general manager was being reduced by an owner with a different vision.

The Cavaliers are changing.

Ferry decided to let them—without him.

He resigned as Cleveland’s general manager after five seasons on Friday, a stunning development for a team seemingly in turmoil during the most important offseason in team history, the Summer of LeBron.

Ferry’s departure came two weeks after owner Dan Gilbert fired coach Mike Brown following the Cavs’ disappointing second-round loss to the Boston Celtics in the NBA playoffs. It also came as the team is making plans to try and bring back James, the two-time MVP and biggest name in a free-agent class like none before.

Ferry, whose contract was set to expire June 30, decided to leave after talks with Gilbert revealed they had differing ideas on the Cavs’ direction.

“It’s the right time to move on,” Ferry said in a phone interview with The Associated Press.

But the timing and suddenness of Ferry’s departure—as well as Brown’s dismissal despite winning 143 games the past two seasons—seem to point to a franchise in disarray.

Gilbert, however, claims the Cavaliers are as strong as ever and said the loss of Brown and Ferry won’t derail his goal of bringing a championship to Cleveland, which hasn’t celebrated a pro sports title in 46 years.

“You’ve got to be willing to take some risks, calculated ones, and make changes when they’re necessary,” Gilbert said.

Ferry said the decision not to renew his contract was a mutual one with Gilbert.

“I thought it was important that there was as much clarity as possible in the organization at this time, so things could start moving forward,” Ferry said. “It’s important that whomever is hired as the head coach knows and understands the people he is going to work with.”

Assistant GM Chris Grant will take over for Ferry, who played in Cleveland for 10 years and became the club’s GM in 2005, shortly after Gilbert hired Brown.

This was a surprise. Thought he'd stick around, but looks like him and the owner couldnt see eye to eye.

      Idk man, I think it’s necessary.  There’s people working 9-5s everyday that get told poo about what they aren’t and what they’re not capable of and they’re working for scraps.  These guys are making millions.  People are watching and invested because their team and fandom is a part of their identity and a big source of pride.  When someone like Bryce comes in and is given chance after chance after chance after proving he is not worthy of the position he’s being gifted, and he continues to be the biggest reason above any that we are losing, yeah…  I think it’s fair to call a spade a spade.  Am I saying Bryce the person is trash?  Bryce the person is a piece of poo?  Absolutely not.     I came up in an era, especially in basketball, where if you were fuging up people heckled the poo out of you.  I played in rec leagues as a teen where the fuging parents were calling kids trash and yelling poo like “TURNOVER!!!  TURNOVER!!!”  “CANT DRIBBLE!”  “CANT SHOOT!”  And that’s adults screaming that poo to kids like we were in the fuging Rucker lol.🤣🤣🤣  I went on to play basketball at a collegiate level and with professional players in different settings.  What those experiences as a kid taught me was to see if there is any merit to what people are saying, and if there is, then work my ass off til they can’t say that anymore.  Come back better, tougher, harder.  And I did.  If kids can figure that poo out, an adult calling another adult who is bad at his job while making millions and millions of dollars will be just fine.

      I have tried to like this team, lord knows I have tried. BY9 is a nice young man, if I had a daughter he can take her to prom, but he ain't QB1 and he's not Cam or Delhomme Chuba is a average RB, he isn't Stephen Davis, he isn't J-Stew McMillan has the makings of a good WR, but he isn't 89/Moose D. Brown is a great player, but if the game was on the line I want Kris Jenkins       I miss this brand of football, even in the bad Jake games the games were entertaining It has been nearly 8 years now of watching numb football

      I'm not so sure. Something about the whole Frank/Bryce situation seemed off from day 1. Bryce didn't fit Frank's QB mold as well as Stroud, then he basically gives up when Bryce is named starter in preseason but gets virtually no reps in games. Then he looks completely unprepared and Dalton steps in in Seattle, has a decent game under immense pressure, and it's right back to Bryce. All his mechanics are terrible and he's having the worst rookie season ever and Frank doesn't bench him?  You dont have to be a conspiracy theorist to know Bryce wasn't ready to be a day 1 starter. Everything with Bryce, then coaches, and the FO seemed forced.
