I can't hold it anymore

I am a Jake Delhomme fan because he's our QB. I do like his fire at times, but his arm is horrible. He doesn't have any zip on the ball. He is not accurate. Smitty is a great wide out, probably better than most think. Think about it he ALWAYS has to adjust to the ball in deep situations. Short passes are his bread and butter. I think we should start grooming Moore to be our starter. Jake can be the Vet that helps him out and is a quality back up. Moore has the tools. He just needs the snaps. I knew our offense would get exposed at some point. Now the question is what changes will be made to fix the problem. We were exposed on national TV in the NFC divisional game. This has to be addressed. Our offense has great talent, and in every game the weak link is Jake. I'm not saying this because of one game. I have always felt like this since the Super Bowl run. If you've ever noticed Jake's TD passes are either slants that WRs takes to the house, a 10-20 yard strike (which is routine for a NFL QB), or a floater that Smitty (usually) has to make a leaping grab. It's time to put an arm under center.

In his last QB competition, Jake threw the ball 73 yards. The winner threw 75. This was before TJ surgery.

Another thread mentioned the quarterback coach. I understood there was no qb coach. They said McCoy. I understand there is no qb coach.

I don't see any sign of a QB coach. Jake throws to closely guarded receivers, mainly Smith, often successfully, sometimes not. This having gone on for years, seems to be either a coaching decision, or a non-coaching result.

If coaching and play design call for Jake to get the ball to Steve Smith, possibly Jake is holding the ball too long waiting for Smith to get less covered.

Possibly Jake has become more submissive to the coaching. In his first year, 2003, towards the end of one game, Jake was told to spike the ball so the coaches could think of what to do. Jake spiked it to a wide receiver for a td.

I wonder (hopelessly) if the owner might be able to send the coaches out of the stadium during the 4th quarter or whole second half and let the players run the game; the players by then would be better judges of their matchups against the opponent. Maybe so as not to give away the strategy, the owner should send the coaches to acting school so as to perform as if still coaching while the players are running the game.

    • And, honestly, there's only so much you can attempt to do in the draft. And every draft pick is a roll of the dice. But that's where grabbing a ton of UDFAs, and targeting the best, makes a big difference. Sure, their individual chances of getting a hit here is less, but that shotgun pattern might just hit something.  Right now, we need bulk, partly to rebuild and partly to dilute the deep level of stank that has developed on this team in the last six years. If we're going to rebuild a culture built around culture, accountability and winning, then these UDFAs we bring in each season have to be the wash water that gets out that leftover dirt.  Canales seems to be a smart, culture-first, build up the good ones kind of guy. I like that and I hope he can keep it going here. But he was working against a locker room that had been taught to lose and taught to distrust or ignore coaches. He's got his work cut out for him, still. He does seem to have it moving in the right direction and that's something I was pretty amazed with by the end of last season.
    • The most telling sign, IMO, of a team on the upward swing is who we lost in the off-season. Who left that even saw the field? Woods, Clowney, Sanders, & Hekker. OK...no big deal. Clowney is the only 1 that I raised an eyebrow over and I get that it was a money decision. No need to pay him over $7M to take snaps from our draft picks when he was just OK last year.
