Marty Hurney Post Game on Panthers Radio

I went out to grab something to eat after the game and listened to the post game show on the radio with Ethan Horton and Rick "somebody" (a new guy, don't remember his name)...

Anyway, they had Marty on after the game and asked what he thought about tonight, here were some key points that stuck out to me:

*Asked about coaches and staff, how he felt about them:

Said "well, we're 1-0" followed by several lulz by all... Then said in all seriousness, that with the amount of youth in there, the new systems and schemes on both offense and defense, it was a testament to how good of a job RR and the staff are doing.

(he also said there are some differences in coaching, and made some inferences, if not flat out saying, that this staff is aggressive and intense, much more different from last staff. But can't remember exact quotes with this part...)

Said he was really happy so far and going forward with the guys we have.

*Asked about what he thought of the QBs:

Looked great. Showed them a lot of what they've been seeing through the first few weeks of camp so far...

Said Jimmy made some great plays out there. Said it was "admirable" how jimmy bounced back from that INT and he was very impressed with how he reacted and played afterwards. Said he made some great plays out there.

With Cam, said everything seems to slow down when he's out there. Made great plays and shows a great deal of poise for a rookie. (some other stuff as well but don't remember all of it)

Said both guys played great but still have room for improvement, but definitely happy with what they've done so far.

*Asked about some of the additions, players that stepped up etc.:

Hurney pointed out Armanti and said we've got some great young WRs who he thinks are ready to step up and make plays. Said a lot of people keep assuming that we need another WR and should address the position but said he really likes the young guys we have and their potential to step up this year. Mentioned Armanti several times and how he performed tonight...

Also mentioned Lego, said they're excited about him and he's made a lot of plays in camp.

And another point I was excited about, as I have said (just as I did with Gettis) that he will make the team, and I think he has a lot of similarities with Smitty, Marty said they're excited about Pilares... Said "he's got a lot of juice" and that we probably saw some of that tonight. So, for those of you thinking he wasn't making the roster, LOL.

...

As I said, there was some more things of note that he said, but these were the biggest things that stood out to me.

Sounded like he was genuinely happy about both QBs performance, but still sounded like the overall points he made about Cam were stronger than Jimmy's... Still, you can tell he likes what we have at QB, WR, and what the coaches have brought to the table. Exciting stuff ahead my fellow Panther fans...

I find it interesting the way that the players and the FO are talking about the Fox situation. More so the players than the FO.

It speaks a ton to the character of John Fox that no one was ever willing to talk poorly of him and his scheme's while he was here. That means he was either a really nice guy that everyone loved and respected as a man, or he was a mean motherfuger that everyone was afraid of.

It seems like though, that now that he is gone, no one is really badmouthing him, but the word "aggressive" and the phrase "we used too", are thrown around alot.

Yeah, I really didn't expect Hurney to make any comparisons to the Fox years, as many around here had been under the assumption (until he was let go at least) that Fox and Hurney were good friends.

Then, I think it was Kris Jenkins' interview recently, that said something about Fox and Hurney having some big disagreement over some things when he was here.

I think the label as being a "player's coach" also makes me think he was the "nice guy" and that's why no one really wanted to talk bad about him while he was here.

    • Exactly He's played two seasons and started 28 games. He's well beyond the point of being able to point to 2 or 3 games and being able to say, "THAT is the QB he is and will be in the future" Of course he can get there, but anyone trying to use just those couple of games to rank his place amongst the games QB's today and their full career's worth of playing at that level, is just asinine. Mahomes, Allen, Lamar, Burrow, Hurts, Herbert, Daniels, Stafford, Goff, Geno, Purdy, Baker, Love, Dak, Tua, Kyler, Lawrence That's 17 QB's right there that have played better over their careers than Bryce has played at his best.  And I'm not saying they're all studs or guys I'd want to be our QB moving forward, Tua for example I wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole, but his body of work is a million times better than Bryce's has been. It's also not including any of the other QB's drafted in 2023/2024 other than Daniels. So again, say you believe in Bryce, say you think he's going to prove he can and should be our QB of the future, that's all fair and totally fine. But nobody can say he's been an above average QB in his career thus far, it's just an asinine notion.
    • I'd think we could get one of those from Dallas for... whatever.
