CHARLOTTE – Danny Crossman chuckles when he hears people talk about the Carolina Panthers having the bulk of their team back from last year.

“Everybody says, ‘Hey, you guys have everybody coming back,’ and I’m like, ‘Wait a second here!’” joked Crossman, the team's special teams coordinator.

While that may be true on offense and defense where the Panthers return 21 of 22 starters, it’s certainly not that way on special teams. In fact, Crossman has more newcomers than incumbents in 2009.

After re-signing offensive tackle Jordan Gross and franchising defensive end Julius Peppers, the Panthers found themselves tight under the salary cap and were forced to let go of a handful of mid-level players, filling out the bottom of their roster with younger, cheaper alternatives.

As a result, Carolina’s special teams unit has taken a hit.

*Mark Jones, the team’s primary punt and kickoff returner last season, left via free agency because the team didn’t have enough cap space to make him decent offer.

*They even lack money at this point to re-sign reliable long snapper Jason Kyle, a free agent who has been perfect on snaps in his eight years with the team.

Interesting how everyone was calling for his neck not too long ago, but I am excited we have given him some fast talent to work with. We need to put up a count down to training camp tracker.

When Crossman can take mediocre talent and make them play well then he is a coach. Anyone can take great talent and do alright. Crossman can't hold Scotty O'Brien's jock.

I was hoping Crossman would be a surprise midseason firing last year.

      If you pay Bryce $50M a year you greatly limit your ability to put the type of team around him you need to have to have a chance to win. THAT is the problem. Hell, we can't win with him on a rookie contract. How the hell are we supposed to start winning with him paying him like a franchise QB and having to make tough roster decisions to accommodate his cap hit?

      Bruce can't be that. Darnold can make a ton of throws that Bruce flat out can't. Darnold's physical talent doesn't handcuff your play calling like Bryce's does. You just have to protect Darnold from himself and not ask too much of him in terms of putting mental pressure on him. That's when he cracks and turns into a turnover machine. Bryce limits the hell out of your play calling. Deep outs? Pretty much eliminated from the playbook. Sideline throws to the wide side of the field when you're on the hash marks? Woah boy. That's begging for a pick six. Throws more than about 10-15 yards beyond the LOS? We're basically having to scheme up those shots to come on 3rd or 4th and short when the D is expecting a run or a quick hitter. 3rd and long is basically a "gain a few yards to hopefully flip this field position eith this upcoming punt" play call versus trying to actually move the sticks. The opposing defense is essentially treating the entire field like its the red zone because Bryce can't really threaten them vertically outside of scheming up deep shots on traditional power running downs... something they'll likely be on the lookout for next year after studying up on us doing that with success down the stretch last year.

      It has a lot to do with it. There's less PT available for rookies on good teams because they're good teams due to having better rosters.
