Nets Hire Kidd, Much To Ewing Jr's Dismay

Recommended Posts

Well if you haven't heard yet, the Brooklyn Nets have hired one of their former players; point guard Jason Kidd.

The Nets quickly agreed to contract details on Wednesday with Kidd, 40, who retired as a player only nine days ago. The Nets will have to surround Kidd, who led the franchise to consecutive NBA Finals as a player but who has no coaching experience, with a seasoned bench of assistants.

The job was offered to Kidd hours after team officials met for nearly five hours with the only other known candidate for the job, Pacers associate head coach Brian Shaw.

Shortly after Kidd was hired, the son of our new Associate Head Coach (Patrick Ewing) tweeted the following...

Patrick Ewing Jr ‏@pewingjr6

For real though I'm mad J Kidd got a head coaching job a year after retiring n my pops been coaching 10 years n barely gets a look

I think Ewing Jr. would be furious if he realized that Kidd was hired a week after retiring, not a year.

Can't see it working out simply because they have high expectations with a mediocre roster and not much flexibility. They are full of old overpaid guys who aren't getting any better. Maybe they just underachieved and will 'click' with Coach Kidd but I'm not counting on it.

If D-Will plays to his true potential, he's a real star. He's in his prime, and I think Kidd will be beneficial to a team who's PG is their best player. BUT, if Brook Lopez AND D-Will play to their true potential, we're possibly looking at an Eastern Conference Finals team on paper.

If you think about it, the Nets formula really isn't that weird.

They've got a star PG

They've got a budding star at C

They've got scorers (Johnson, Brooks, Watson, Blatche)

They've got defense (Wallace, Evans)

Yes they overpaid Crash and took a huge contract in Johnson, but there really is a lot more young talent on that team then people give credit for. Marshon Brooks and Brook Lopez could start on 75% of the teams in the NBA (Lopez could start on just about every one but 2 off the top of my head)

As far as J-Kidd, I think that as long as he's surrounded by seasoned assistants, he'll be fine. He played in the league 19 years, he's 40 years old, and he's accomplished just about everything a player can accomplish. He took a big jump and skipped a step, but so did Mark Jackson and Doc Rivers and it's gone pretty well for both of them.

    • What you are saying isn't always true and I'll give you several examples to demonstrate this. 1) The best player on the board at the end of in round 1 by all consensus is RB (top 15 player in draft who slips b/c of the devaluation of the RB position). Your team is in desperate need of a LT because the current one is getting your QB killed. You already have a serviceable RB in place. The LT has a 2nd round grade and you have the first pick on day 2 of the draft Who do you choose? 2) Your run defense was abysmal the previous season. A DT in round 2 does not provide much in terms of pass rush, but most reports have him rated as the best pure run stuffing DT in the draft. The two highest rated players on your board at the time are a TE and tweener at OLB/DE who slipped into round 2 after a run on WR's. Who do you choose? 3) Your pass rush rush is solid across the board. You even have guy coming off of the bench to provide production. Your secondary in below average. No Safety on the roster is a difference maker and as a unit the squad doesn't have an INT. The highest rated player on the board is a DE. The 5th highest rated player on the board is a an intelligent ball hawking Safety. Which player would make the team immediately better?  1) I think the BPA logic applies when your team is solid across the board and you can afford to draft for depth 2) I think it also applies when your team stinks and any solid player will be an immediate upgrade over what you already have. I agree that you should NEVER reach for a player when you are need at a position like we did for Bryce Young. But I also think if there's is a player on the board that will fill a glaring weakness you need to take him even if a player with a higher over all ranking is available at another position (which isn't a need)
    • Bryce Young excels at dividing Panthers fans. That seems to be what he's best at.
    • 184 yards game, 61% completion 11 tds 5ints    thats ranks :check notes:  25th in the nfl
