It sounds like one of the major reasons Funchess wasn't drafted higher is the same as why people think Shaq is a 2nd rounder: no true position. Clearly we picked these guys for a reason (the positions we believe they fill). Also, another reason Funchess was drafted lower was because of his slow combine time, however his pro day was much faster. From the short play action we've seen he doesn't look 4.7 slow and he is agile. Funchess is also by all accounts really smart.
Hurney drafted guys who should have been drafted lower, Gettleman has drafted guys who should have been drafted higher. So I do think it matters who the talent evaluator is when it comes to draft picks and draft rounds.
Funchess has the chance to put up big numbers this season and I think he's more likely to do it than not.

The worst part about Corey is that he is making great routes and getting open. He has everything except his hands right now and it is so depressing.

Funchess, whether he kills it or not, is going to add another dynamic to the starters at least. Hopefully that will give us something to work with.

To be fair, Corey has had some great blocks on runs this game. He isn't weak.

yeah i don't get why we aren't seeing different WRs in the game.

On the other hand I'm almost ready to say for the defense this looks like Baltimore pre-season 2013, which is a great sign.

fug that, we should be able to pick up those yards, we shouldn't need to finesse it. Tolbert sucks as a blocker and our O-Line needs to man up.

This is the year to flip the mattresses on some of these positions before they get really worn out by the end of the year. The only thing that gives me pause is are we getting carried away with how talented these young guys really are or are they legit? Right now it feels like GMan brought in some real talented rookies this year who are actually deserving of making the team and showing a lot of fire and fight to make the squad. I just don't see how we can let guys like Ward and Wegher go though. Those are actual talents for an NFL roster. Haven't really watched Redden, but if he can actually be a young guy who gets built up in the rotation, then that is huge moving forward.

I agree with this thread though, this looks like a year with some younger moves being made. Vets like Brockel and Tolbert could be on their way out, and honestly they probably should be. I feel bad because I feel like Tolbert is so engrained with the players that his absence would be felt and may disrupt the locker room. However, this is when a "well run organization" would release those guys -- before they start to really stink and block us from bringing up the young talent we have available. Also, not saying it's gonna happen yet, but if Kalil's injury keeps him out for some real games and Remmers fills in at Center solidly, we may be seeing the future of the O-Line when they put Williams in.

One of the knocks on Brown coming out was that he has small hands. The same as LaFell. I think small hands can be like not having proper technique on a jump shot: it leads to streakiness where sometimes you can catch anything and sometimes you drop everything. There's no long term consistency because of how delicate the form is. A response to small unsure hands is chest catching, which is also inconsistent.

No doubt Corey is quick, has the attitude, and is developing his strength and route running to play in the NFL, but his hands will probably hamper him from becoming a legit big time receiver for a long career.

With Brockel injured, Ward has an opening to make a move for a roster spot. Hope he can make them have to give it to him.
