David Newton got the chance to ask John Elway about Cam Newton, and Elway gave Newton praise. And, in my book, the praise was was pretty much above and beyond where he had to go.  Elway seems extremely confident that Newton will continue to get better and better.

"I think he's a tremendous athlete," Elway said. "He just continues to get better and better. And you look at what he did last year and the strides that he's made, he's going to make another big jump this year.

"Just as a quarterback having been there, the things that you see from your first to second to third year are always big jumps, so he's going to continue to get better. He's got all the ability to being a great one."

I usually don't give too much credence one way or another when people comment on Cam these days (except when a comment is unfounded in reality), but Elway's praise is a little more noteworthy than most considering his career, knowledge of the position, and knowledge of the game.  If nothing else, it is an affirmation of what many Panthers fans believe.

So when Elway says Newton has the ability to be a great one, you tend to listen. He believes Newton, recovering from offseason ankle surgery, is on the cusp of becoming one of the elite quarterbacks in the NFL.

I remember that he liked him during the draft process. That would have been First Take wet dream, The Golden Calf of Bristol and Cam.

Especially given that 1) Elway has built a successful team and 2( as a player, Elway was the same kind of quarterback that Newton is.

Great kudos from an NFL legend. I am sure most Panther fans agree that we have something special in Cam and I am proud to have him leading this team.

I wish I worked for an NFL team some days and could talk to the people that make real personnel decisions and study film with real experience & knowledge of the game, so I could laugh at how retardedly wrong the frequent commentary is on players.

Then again, it doesn't take an NFL scout to see how ridiculous some of the articles that come out about Cam and some of the other "running" quarterbacks are.

Considering Manning's age and their near-future-need for a QB...I believe Elway's creepin'.

I doubt any one player has ever been the face of the league. It's usually impossible to even get a consensus on who the best QB is.

Yup, a mobile QB with a cannon for an arm and that special "clutch" gene. :)))))
