Mayers no longer has a team because the South-Western City School Board (the district includes four high schools: Central Crossing, Grove City, Franklin Heights and Westland) took the unprecedented step of canceling all extra-curricular activities after voters failed to pass an operating levy Aug. 4. Now, the four high schools in Ohio's sixth-largest school district have no sports, no bands, no drama productions and no student council.

Eliminating extra-curriculars is one of the worst decisions a school can make. The differences some of those programs can make in a kid's life and the opportunites it can create may even outweigh the educationt hey get at that school.

The idea that enriching a childs social life in a positive, structured, and well controled way (such as the one provided by school extra curricular activities) is not vital to that child's preparation for their adult life is absurd. This should never have become an issue and the community at large has failed for not acting sooner to prevent it.

Maybe we need to bailout our schools instead of banks and big corporations. If only they had a strong lobby...
