some good light trash reading for escapism if you like:

brian lumley

world war z

koontz series - odd thomas & frankenstein (love his writing style and very much try to emulate with my own books)

anita blake series up to book 11

mark tufo's zombie fallout series

bv larson

d.j. molles

henlein, asimov, and herbert are heavier hitters in large if you like the classical avenues

ghost in the shell and neuromancer were way ahead of their time (and altered carbon is a step further if you like the genre)

Orson Scott Card - Ender's Game is a very good sci-fi novel. I don't know about the series that followed though.

most of them are really good... i actually like xenocide better than ender's game.

The way Ender's Game ended was so drawn out and anti-climactic that I was really disinterested in reading beyond it.

But the rest of the book is great fun despite its latent homosexual undertones.

you didn't know orson scott card is an anti-homosexual bigot? kinda pissed me off, and in hindsight, some of the things that happen in the novel are creepy.

its not the undertones that bother me, its the undertones coming from a bigot that are creepy. gay people don't bother me. straight people that don't know they're gay fug my poo right up.

The Passage by Justin Cronin. I'm 64% through it and it is nothing like I've ever read in my life. It's the first book in a trilogy about the end of the world. A lot of people compare it to The Stand. Check it out.
