Terrible system to decide life or death.

Hopefully some people are feeling ashamed tonight.

The only people who should feel ashamed are the seven witnesses who recanted their statements. They either lied then or they are lying now. As an American, when you are under oath, you should speak the truth because someone's life could be at risk.

Then there are the two men who stated that Troy Davis confessed to them and the other witnesses who haven't recanted their statements. If they lied, they should be ashamed.

We'll never know if Troy Davis did or didn't kill the officer. There is no DNA evidence or video surveillance. What we do know is several witnesses described Davis as the man who killed the officer. We also know two men stated that Davis confessed to the murder to them. Also Davis left town the following morning and did not turn himself in until several days later. None of this can logically prove that he committed the crime but it would make anyone suspicious (Namely the predominately black jury which found him guilty).

The only debate I can see arising from this is whether or not witnesses are valid evidence. Without witnesses being evidence, a lot of dangerous people will be avoiding jail time. Or perhaps we should only use the death penalty in cases where there is tangible evidence like DNA or video surveillance but allow witness testimony for imprisonment?

The recanting thing is kind of a joke.

None of the 7 ever actually recanted under oath. The recantation came purely from the defense team. One guy said he couldn't remember what he said, not that he lied.

Another lady was said to have recanted but was already dead.

If you read the judges decision none of this really had any bearing on the case.

I sincerely hope that this will be the catalyst to end this awful practice. I am so proud that I've gone from staunch defender to staunch opponent of the death penalty in my life based on facts. It does nothing to deter crime, is expensive to accomplish, and kills innocent people. The tiny segment of the population it's designed to provide justice to are split on it, and it's supporters are people that seem to care little about the fact that innocent people are killed to satisfy their sense of justice.
