Anyone know where I can find these stats that date back to 97?

NHL.com carries those stats all the way back to 1997-1998 season, if this link doesn't take you to them. Those two stats are found under the" Real Time stats" option.

Try the Hockey News Yearbook from those seasons.
CPF94: NHL.com doesn't list BS & Hits leading down to 1996 or 1997.
