Isn't backpedaling a big drill they do at the combine for DBs and LBs? Ha! How could they not have seen this through the whole draft process? All the talk about the Bengals having the best draft...

Well he either hasn't backpedaled, or lacks the common sense to even know what backpedaling is.

You don't want either in an NFL corner.

That's what I'm saying. I thought Back pedaling is one of the fundamental moves you learn as a DB, more specifically as a Corner. I don't understand how he doesn't know how to do this. He should be moved to safety to be honest then.

Well I do remember reading in his scouting report that he may be better suited to play safety, but damn even safeties have to backpedal, although not as often as CB.

i thought backpedaling just makes sense... like does he really try to run with the receiver their ENTIRE route? u backpedal in anticipation then break...

As someone who wanted us to draft Gilmore or Kirkpatrick in the first, I think it really depends on if Norman ends up starting. I love Kuechly, and I have to admire the brass of our coaching staff by waiting until the 5th to address the CB situation.

If out starter at CB2 is Munnerlyn or Hogan going into the season, and they are getting burned by #2 WRs then I would say the gamble didn't pan out.

If on the other hand, Norman starts and plays decent for a Rookie then I think we hit the jackpot with him and got ourselves a safer and better 1st round pick because of it.

really, he dosen't have to back pedal... not surprised..and no you don't have to backpedal as a db. you can either backpedal or side step. its used most often in zones defense but backpedaling is use most often because it keeps the reciever in front of you before you turn your hips and open up. side stepping puts you at risk losing your man

...or that just because he wasn't asked to do it that he can't do it
...or that this is some surprise that the Bengals didn't know until he made that statement like they never once looked at him play at Alabama

Lots of people acting like this is no big deal and then lots of people acting like this means he's a certain bust.

As usual, the truth is somewhere in between. No doubt about it, when you're hearing things like this out of your 1st round pick, it's a concern. It doesn't mean he's a certain bust, but it does mean that he's likely behind the curve in terms of adapting to the NFL.

A CB saying he doesn't know how to backpedal is akin to a WR saying he doesn't know what a route tree is. It's definitely a concern. However, to be fair, so were the play calls that Cam Newton was asked to call at Auburn. Admit it, everyone who saw that Jon Gruden QB Camp episode with Cam thought, "Uh oh!" when they went through that play call segment. We all know how that worked out.

Saying he never backpedaled in college and saying he doesn't know how to are completely different things.
