Jonathan Stewart Signs Five Year (36.5 Million) Contract Extension

Best Answer Kurb, 11 August 2012 - 05:38 PM

I would say I am shocked so many of you fail to see the implications of this waste of money in RunningBacks, then I remember Im the local badguy lately for saying we spend too much on runningbacks and you are all incredible homers. Go to the full post

First of all people act like we have been paying a ton for running backs for 2009 and 2010 when our team was poor and that we neglected other positions and that just isn't true. We paid Wiliams at the end of 2010 so the 2009 and 2010 seasons have nothing to do with overpaying for running backs. The only season that remotely could be considered is 2011 and even then we didn't pay more than 10 million for double trouble which is not much more than some teams paid for one back. And really from a salary cap point of view we are spending 12 million on Williams, Stewart and Tolbert combined in 2012. It isn't until 2013 that we are even paying a premium for our running backs so the whole it has kept our team back is ridiculous. If you are talking actually salaries it is even less.

The three of them cost less than 10% of our cap. In fact in 2012, the cost of Charles Johnson alone which is 11,000,000 is about the same as all three combined. For that matter Jordan Gross cost us 11,500,000 this season. Each of them cost us almost 10% of the cap themselves.

Your whole premise is flawed with poor logic. First of all Wiliams never showed much at all up until 2008 so drafting Stewart wasn't a waste at all. Many people would suggest that drafting Stewart was just the fire Williams needed under his butt to start producing. Secondly, until 2013 we aren't paying 2 running backs featured money and there is significant thought that WIlliams will never see the last 2 years of his contract. None of his money is guaranteed after 2012 and his cap hit if done as a June 1 cut won't be bad after 2013. So we might end up paying big bucks to the both of them for 1 year.

But this whole paying 90 millions for 2 backs is surely not going to happen unless they both produce at a very high level. So please give it a rest and let it play out. This year all of our backs are making the same as Adrian Peterson is making by himself. Lets see what happens next year before bitching for another year like you did with Williams about how that would stop up signing Stewart. You were the main one I was talking about with your constant bitching and your still at it. You have been wrong all along but that hardly deters you. Why not stop now while you are behind.

maybe you didn't watch the same 2007 as I but Williams beasted when given the chance. HUGE runs. Fox just pointlessly kept giving Foster the bulk of the work. Then there was the comical crowd that claimed Foster was wearing Ds down and that was the result of Williams going off.

And the concept of 90 million dollars being a significant investment even spread out a few years flies right over twylyght's head

God forbid his dumb, glazed over eyes take a view from a higher vantage point.

It will never approach 90 million as Wiliams won't see the last 2 years of his contract and Stewart's contract only goes to 42 million if we pick up the fifth year and he produces. The guaranteed money for both of them through 2013 is around 30 million and with what we paid in 2011 and additional salaries in 2012 and 2013 have averaged about 11-12 million per year. The cap hit for the two of them in 2013 will be significant even though the actually salary won't be. But when we have to pay the 9 million roster bonus for Stewart in 2014, we may part ways with Williams. So the whole premise of your argument is worse case scenario and not very likely to even come to pass. So how about not bitching for years about a scenario that won't happen like someone else we know.

You mean the 144 carries for 717 yards??? Seriously???? I give you a whole page of info and this is what you pick?? And even then you are wrong. 700 yards and 4 TDs is hardly beasting. He averaged 45 yards a game. LOL

LOL. That was when Mr 5 yards a carry arrived. So 5 yards a pop wasn't impressive for you I guess....

Like I said, Fox comically gave Foster the bulk of the work. Williams started beasting in
2007. Got the reps in 2008.

You don't remember the pages and pages of threads asking why Fox kept giving Foster the carries when Williams kept breaking the runs?

P55 was part of that crowd. KT too because he liked Foster.

Also, why are you knocking his yardage in 2007? He gained only 79 more total in 2011.

Only because Foster wore them down first.

...and BTW, since we're focused on building through the draft our year-to-year cap number really isn't important. We're going to acquire talent on the cheap for 4 years and by the time we need to pay those guys these contracts will have expired.

True, his 3 yards a pop was fierce. Also, they did have to tire out from chasing after his league leading fumble habit.

I was done with Fox in 07. He favorites always showed at that point forward.
